IMPROVEMENT IN SWINGS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,684, dated August 4, 1874; application filed May 5, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ADoLPH SHOENINGER, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Childs Swing for Doorways, of which the following is a specification:

The first part of my invention relates to a peculiar grapple for suspending a childs swing from the top of a door-frame; the second part relates to the combination, with the said grapple, of four pendulum-rods for suspending a seat-swing or a hobby-horse, in or on which the child may swing' back and forth, through the doorway; the third part relates to a swing on rockers, having a stud on each end of each rocker, by which the swingis suspended from the rods; and the fourth part relates to a hobby-horse provided with studs at the feet, to engage in like manner with the rods, as more fully hereinafter set forth.

Figure lis a perspective view of a swing suspended in a doorway. Fig. 2 is a crosssection at x m. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the lower end of one lever of the grapple, and a longitudinal section of the upper end of a rod suspended therefrom, the section being taken through y y, in Fig. 4, which is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 5 is a perspective view, showing the manner of suspending a hobby-horse to the swing.

In the drawing, A A represent two pairs of curved cross-levers, pivoted at a., together, the upper ends of these at each side being connected by girts b, across their inner edges, which are designed to rest upon the top edges of the door-frame. The lower parts of the levers are also connected by transverse girts b. 0n the inner face of the lower end of each lever is a stud, c, to which is suspended a brror rod, B, by a slot, d, at its upper end,which slot is enlarged at the bottom to receive the head of the stud. At the lower end of each bar is a similar slot, as shown in Fig. 5. C is a seat mounted on rockers C', with a buttonheaded stud, c, projecting inwardly from both ends of each rocker. \'l`he seat is hung from the rods by engaging its studs with the slots in the lower ends of said rods.

Vhen the child in the seat desires to swing himself, he takes hold of the two front rods and oscillates the upper portion of his body, as in operating an ordinary swing. In Fig. 5 is represented the fore parts of a wooden horse, I), provided with studs c, projecting from each foot, to engage with the slots in the rods, in place of the seat, so that the little fellow can play the cavalryman, if he wishes.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The herein-described grapple, for suspending a swing in a door-frame, consisting of the crossed levers A, girts b b b b', and studs o, as shown and set forth.

2. The combination, with the grapple A, of the slotted rods B, as and for the purpose set forth.

3. The swing-seat C, provided with the studs e, and suspended thereby from the bars B, as shown and set forth.

4. The studs-e on the feet of the horse D, combined and adapted for use with the slotted bars B, as and for the purpose set forth.
