IMPROVEMENT IN ROCKING-CHAIRS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 183,221, dated October 10, 1876,' application filed May 22, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM SIIAITB, of Nashville, in the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and Improved Rocking Swing, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l represents a top view, and Fig. 2 a vertical longitudinal section on line x, Fig. 1, of iny improved rocking swing.

My invention relates to an improved rocking swing for children, adults, and invalids, that is built in strong and secure manner, so as to form a perfectly safe rocker for the amusement of children, and a comfortable swinging chair for grown people.
The invention consists of a rocking swing, made of round rockers secured centrally to the posts of the seats, and at the ends to the extended foot and seat rests. The seat-rests are braced by interior strengthening-pieces.
In the drawing, A represents the rockers of my improved rocking swing or chair, which rockers are curved and made of round crosssection, to be used on any carpet or floor without injuring the same. The rockers A connect the front ends of the foot-rests B and the rear ends of the extended seat-rests G, the pillars or posts D of the seat being applied about midway between the ends to the rockers.
The extreme ends of foot and seat rests B and C are provided with downward-projecting shoulders a, that serve as stops or seats to the rockers when they arrive at the extreme points of their swinging motion. The foot and seat rests B C are secured to the upright posts D, and connected by lateral slats b.
When the rocking swing is designed for childrens use, the front parts of the foot-rests are provided with horses heads or other ornamentation.
The back-rest E is connected, by the armrests F, with the upper ends of the posts D. The back-rest E is also arranged with lateral slats b, and may, for invalids, be cushioned, as well as the seat-slats, in suitable manner.
The inside of the seat-rests D is strengthened by brace-strips D', that taper toward the rear ends, and serve to give additional stiffness and rigidity to the seat and posts. The rear ends of the seat-rests are laterally braced, while the slats of the foot-rests, seat, and back impart the required lateral strength to the remaining parts of the rocking swing.
The swing cannot upset, being perfectly safe for children, is readily portable from place to place, and forms a comfortable rocker for the amusement and enjoyment of old and young.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
