UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.

COMBINATION LEG-SUPPORT AND CARRIAGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 787,675, dated April 18, 1905.
- Application filed June 30,1903. Renewed March 6, 1905. Serial No. 248,657.
1'0 all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE KELLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mineralpoint, in the county of Iowa and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Oombination Leg-Support and Carriage, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a novel leg and foot support or carriage.
One of the objects of the invention is to construct an attachment in the form of an article of manufacture that may be readily applied by the user to any ordinary chair and will constitute a comfortable leg-support, permitting the usual rocking motion without interference.
It is well known that many rocking-chairs will creep and move laterally in rocking; and one of the features of this invention relates to means which permit the leg-support to follow the chair in its various movements.
A further object is to provide a structure of the above character which when not employed as aleg-support may be used asachilds carriage or toy wagon.
A still further object is to provide a structure that is compactly foldable.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the article of manufacture when employed as a leg-support. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the same when employed as a car: riage. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the hinge, a portion thereof being shown in section.
In the embodiment illustrated a seat member 10 and a leg-supporting member 11 are employed. The seat member 10 is constructed to be placed upon the seat of an ordinary chair, as 12, and to this end it comprises a base-plate 13, having one side upholstered, as
shown at 14. The seat member 10 is preferably long enough to project a short distance beyond the front edge of the chair-seat, and to this projecting end is hinged the leg-supporting member 1 1. Said leg-supporting member comprises a base-plate 15, suitably upholstered, as shown at 16, and having one end 17 tapered, said end being hinged to the seat member. The member 11 carries a rail 18, which is secured to the edge of the same with the exception of the tapered end 17, surrounding the opposite end. Said opposite end is also provided with a suitable handle 19. The end of the leg-supporting member carrying the rail has on its under side depending hanger-brackets 20, to the lower ends of which is secured a transverse axle 21, having wheels 22 journaled thereon. The tapered end 17 also carries spaced brackets 23, between and to which is journaled another supporting-wheel 24, the wheels'thus being located at the end of the leg member. The hinge connecting the two members comprisesleaves 25, secured, respectively, to the base-plates l3 and 15 and having their projecting ends offset, as shown at 26,and provided with alined eyes 27 Through these eyes is passed a pivot 28, that fits loosely therein, so as to permit the lateral relative play of the hinge members, as will be evident by reference to Fig. 4E. The offset portions 26 of the hinge-leaves are located between the adjacent ends of the members and are preferthe lower end of the leg-supporting memberi The chair can thus be rocked without interference. Moreover, because of the loose con nection between the hinge-leaves, if the chair should creep or move laterally during its rocking movements the leg member will follow the same Without difficulty. When not Wanted for use, the seat member may be folded upon the leg-supporting member because of the pcculiar construction of the hinge. The structure may thereupon be used as an ordinary childs carriage or toy wagon.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction, operation, and many advantages of the herein-described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art Without further description, and it will be understood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As an article of manufacture, the combination with a leg-supporting member,of means for movably supporting the member, and means for detachably connecting the leg-supporting member to an ordinary chair, said means comprising a seat element that detachably rests upon the usual chair-seat.
2. As an article of manufacture, the combination with a leg-supporting member,of means for supporting one end of the member, and means for detachably connecting the other end of the member to an ordinary chair, said means comprising a seat element that detachably rests upon the usual chair-seat and is hinged to the said end of the supporting member.
3. In a structure of the class described, the combination with a seat member constructed to be placed in an ordinary rocking-chair, of a leg-supporting member hinged to the seat member and having a vertical and lateral swinging movement with respect thereto.
4. As an article of manufacture, the combination with a leg-supporting member, of means for movably supporting one end of the legsupporting member, and means for detachably connecting the leg-supporting member to an ordinary chair, said connecting means comprising a seat-plate that detachably rests upon the usual chair-seat.
5. As an article of manufacture, the combination with a leg supporting member, of wheels connected to one end of the member for movably supporting the same, and means for detachably connecting the other end of the leg-supporting member to an ordinary chair, said means comprising an upholstered seat-plate that detachably rests upon the usual chair-seat and is hinged to the supporting member.
6. In a structure of the class described, the combination with a leg-supporting member, of supports for the member located at the ends thereof, and means for attaching one end of the support to a rocking-chair with the support for that end elevated to permit the combination with a leg-supporting member having wheels at its ends, of means hinged to one end of the support for engaging a chair and suspending said end with the Wheel carried thereby in spaced relation to the floor.
8. In a structure of the class described, the combination with a leg-supporting member, of a seat member foldable upon one face of the leg-supporting member, and wheels carried by the opposite face of said leg-supporting member. I
9. In a structure of the class described, the combination with a leg-supporting member having a tapered end, of means for detachably and hingedly connecting the tapered end to a chair, handles connected to the opposite end of the leg-supporting member, a guard-rail surrounding the end of the member having the handles, said rail terminating short of the tapered end, and supporting means for the legsupporting member, said supporting means permitting the movement of the member both when attached to the chair and when detached therefrom, whereby the structure may be employed as a childs carriage when detached.
10. In a structure of the class described, the combination with a leg-supporting member, of a seat-supporting member hinged at one end to the leg-supporting member and foldable upon the same, a handle attached to the opposite end of the leg-supporting member, and wheels carried by the under side of the leg-supporting member.
11. In a structure of the class described, the
combination with a cushioned seat member constructed to be placed in and supported on the seat of an ordinary rocking-chair, of a leg-supporting member hinged to the seat member and forming a continuation thereof, said leg-supporting member being provided with wheels to traverse the floor in the rocking movements of the chair.
12. In a structure of the class described, the combination with a cushioned seat member constructed to be placed in and supported on the seat of an ordinary rocking-chair, of a leg-supporting member hinged to the said member and provided with wheels at each end, the wheels at one end being adapted to trav+ erse the floor in the ordinary rocking movements of the chair, while the Wheel or Wheels at the other end are elevated above the floor, said seat member being removable from the rocking-chair and foldable upon the leg-supporting member, whereby the latter may serve as a childs carriage when used separately from the rocking-chair.
13. In a structure of the class described, the combination with a cushioned seat member constructed to be placed on the seat of an ordinary rockingchair, of a leg-supporting the ordinary rocking movements of the chair, my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in said seat member being adapted to be removed the presence of two Witnesses. from the chair and folded on top of the legsupporting member. whereby the latter may GEORGE KELLY 5 be used as an article of furniture separately Witnesses:
from the chair. PHIL ALLEN; J r.,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as FRANK E. HANSCOM.
