.UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS O. HOPKINS AND'SIDNEY H. EASTERDAY, OF KANSAS-CITY, MISSOURI; SAID EASTERIDAY` ASSIGNOR TO SAID HOE'KNS.
SCSSORS SHARPENER.
Application filed February 18, 1924. Serial No. 693,550,
'o all @ii/0m t 'may concern,
Be 1t known that we, THoMAs O.' HOPKINS and Sinner H. EAsTnnDAY, citizens of the llnited States, residing at Kansas City, in the `county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful mpi'ovements in Scissors Sharpeners, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to scissors sharpeners and our object-is to provide a simple, inexpensive and eflicient device of thischaracter by means of which scissors may be conveniently supported while being sharpened.l
A further object is to provide means for supporting a whet-stone, file, or other instrument at the proper angle or inclination with relation to the holder for the purpose of giving the desired bevel to the cutting edges of the scissors.
(therrobjects will hereinafter appear and in order that the invention may be fully understood, reference will now be had to the accompanying drawing, in which:
l? lY is a plan view of the device with a pair of' scissors secured in position thereon i tobe sharpened. ,lligx 2 is a cross section von line lli-Il ot 3 is a broken longitudinal section on line IHF-lll of Fig. l. l
lu carrying out the invention we employ a bed-plate 2, provided at its rear margin with an upturned gage 4 having an inclined sur- Aface G for holding each blade of the scissors A at Athe proper `angle while being sharpcned.
rlhe forward portion of the bed-plate is provided with a pair of upwardly extending b bearings 8, in which an antifriction roller i s` j ouriialed. i
`12 designates a resilient clamp fixed at one end to the `bed-plate 2 by suitable means such, for instance, asa screw or rivet 14 and extend ing upwardly andforwardly` towards the gage `4, its forward end 13 being turned upwardly to press against onev end of the blade B to firmly hold the same against the inclined surfaces 6 of said gage 4.
The resilient clamp `12 `is drawnv firmly into engagement with the blade B by a screw 1S extending downwardly through an openinginthe bed-plate 2 and provided with a thumb-nut whereby it is adjusted.
The cutting edge C of the blade B is held 1n parallel relation to the roller 10 through the mtermediacy of set screws 21 and 22 forced with bosses 24.
The end of the gage 4 adjacent to the handle of the scissors is provided with an abutment 26 against which the blade D is placed preparatory to clamping the blade B in position to be sharpened.
In practice the thumb-nut 2O is loosened to permit the clamp 12 t0 spring upwardly away from the gage 4, so that either blade of. the scissors A can be readily p-laced against the inclined surface 6 of said gage 4. The set screws 2l and 22 are then adjusted to bring the cutting edge of the blade B in parallel relation to the roller 10, after which said blade B is firmly clamped against the gage 4 by the clamp l2, which is drawn downwardly against the blade B by turning the thumb-nut 20. A whet-stone, file or other instrument ld is then moved back and forth over the roller 'l0` and the edge of the blade B, which is thereby given the proper bevel and thoroughly sharpened. After one blade has been sharpened the scissors A are reversed to bring the blade D into position to be sharpened.
From the foregoing description it is apparent that we have provided a sharpening device embodying the advantages above pointed out; and while we have shown and described the preferred construction, combination and arrangement of parts we reserve the right to malte such. changes as properly fall within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent, is:
1. A scissors sharpcner consisting of a bed-plate having a gage at its rear portion, clamp means for holding either blade of a pair of scissors against said gage, an abutment on the gage `against which one blade of the scissors bears while the other blade is being sharpened, an antifriction roller at the forward portion of the bed-plate, and set screws for adjusting the blades in parallel relation with said rol-ler preparatory to sharpening said blades.
2. VIn a scissors Sharpener, a bed-plate,
[threaded in the bed-plate 2, which is reini means for scouring either blade ofi u pail' of Scissors in position upon said bed-plate, e Sharpener guide mounted on the bed-plate, und two elemeiis spaced apart and threaded in said bed-plate to adjust the secured end of either blade up o1' down to bring the same in parallel relation with said guide.
In testimony whereof We alli); om' sign tures, in the presence of two witneseos.
