HENRY C. SIMONS, OF ODEBOLT, IOWA.
DISILSHABPENING DEVICE.
Application filed May 10, 1919.
To all tU/LOHL it may 0011mm Be it known that 1', HENRY C. Strons, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gdebclt, in the county of Sao and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Disis harpening Devices, of whirh the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a disk-sharpening device, and has for its object to provide an apparatus by means of which metallic disk or circular metallic plates, when axially mounted and rotated, may be readily provided with a cutting edge, the parts to be few and simple so that manufacture will be economical and practical, will be edectual in operation, and that durability may be attained.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1. is a front view of disk sharpening device embodying my invention. 2 is a broken away detail view showing a part of a bladeholder. Fig. 3 is an end view of the device. Fig. 4 is a ransverse section'on line 44.- of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the cutting-blade.
Referring now to the drawing for a more particular description, numerals 6 indicate a pair of strips or elongated supports, these being disposed parall l and adjacent to each other, straps 7 or other equivalent members being secured to the lower sides of the supports for securing them in spaced relation.
Mounted upon the flanges a of the angle irons is a standard 9, this preferably being of inverted U-shape, each of its arms being provided with a foot-member c for engaging said horizontal flanges, and by use of suitable keepers or bolts 10, it will be under stood that the standard may be secured to the last named flanges, these being engaged at their lower sides by the heads d of the bolts. Also it will be understood that by use of the bolts, in a well known manner, the standard may be adjusted longitudinally of the supports. the foot-members 0 having bearings on the flanges a.
Numeral 11 indicates a second standard, substantially of inverted U-shape, disposer transversely to span the space 72 adjacent to Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 296,271.
one end of the supports opposite to the standard 9, said standard 11 having footmembers a secured to the supports 6, its upper end being provided with a box 12 for bearings of a stub shaft 13 upon which is mounted a wheel adapted to be actuated. by any suitable means for rotating saidshaft, the inner end of the latter being provided with a clamping block 15.
Threaded in the arms of the standard 9 is a centering-screw 16, adapted to be retated by its crank 7, and as thus described, a revoluble movement is provided for any object or article interposed between and carried by the block 15 and centering-screw, as for instance, the disk-holding shaft 17 of an agricultural impl ment, the disks 18 being secured to and rotating with the shaft.
In order that the disks may be sharpened, I provide a cutting-blade 19 which is substantially triangular in cross-section to cnand sharpen the peripheral edges of the disks while the latter are rotating.
Since the disks are not always accurately centered on the shaft and are not, in all instances, disposed at exactly right-angles to said shaft, 1 provide a staff 20 which may be manually controlled, its lower end being provided with spike g and its upper end being provided with an arm-hold it, said staff, between its ends, being provided with bracket 21 having a projection Z: for supporting the blade 19, a bolt 22 being employed and having a threaded connection with a projection m of the brarket for securin the blade 19 in rigid relation with the bracket; and it will be appreciated that an operator, using said member 20 as a crutch, with its spike g suitably engaging one of the supports 6, may cause the disks to become sharpened, the staff being disposed at such inclination that one of the longitudinal edges of theblade 19 will engage the periphery of the disk at a suitable inclination to form a shapened edge, a transverse handheld member a being also provided for the staff, as an aid in its manual control.
It will be appreciated that the device would be practically inoperative unless the cutting-blade 19 or a blade substantially similar thereto was employed, the fact that this blade is of triangular form in crosssection being of advantage for securing it to the bracket and presenting one of its edges for engaging the circular edge of a disk. Also unless the standard 9 is arranged set-screw s has been adjusted in the block 15, and the screw 16 made non-revoluble by -use of the lock-nut w, the shaft 13 may be actuated for rotating the shaft lTand its disks, the speed or degree of rotation preferably being moderate or quite limited, so that an operator may effect a suitable engagement of the blade 19 with the disk, as and for the purpose described.
"While I have explained construction in detail, I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself in this respect, and changes may be made in form, size, proportion of parts, material to be used and minor details, since the extent or degree of such changes are determined by the scope of the invention 'as claimed.
1. In an apparatus for sharpening the disks of a disk-holding shaft, a pair of elongated supports connected side by side to form a channel therebetween, each support being provided with a flange disposedto overlie a part of said channel, a standard stationary with the sup mrts, a revoluble stub-shaft having bearings on the stationary standard and provided with a clampingmember for supporting one end of the diskholding shaft, a second standard substantially of inverted U-shape having footmembers engaging said flanges and provided with a centering-element, means on .the foot-members of the second standard adapted to engage said flanges for adjusting Said second standard longitudinally of the supports for engagement of said centering element with the opposite end of the disk-holding shaft, a staff, and a cuttingblade triangular in cross-section mounted on the staff, said staff being adapted to be disposed in engagement with one of the supports with its cutting-blade engaging a disk of said disk-holding shaft.
2. In an apparatus for sharpening the disks of a disk-holding shaft, a pair of elongated supports connected side by side to form a channel therebetween, each support being provided with a flange overhanging a part of said channel, a standard on the supports, a revoluble stub-shaft with bear ings on the standard and having a clamp ing-member for engaging one end of the disk-holding shaft, a second standard substantially of inverted U-shape' provided with a centering-screw and having foot-members engaging said flanges, a pair of bolts each traversing a foot-member of the second standard and having a head in engagement with said flanges, said second standard and said centering screw being movable for engagement of said screw with the opposite end of the disk-holding shaft, a staff, and a cutting-blade angular in cross-section mounted on the staff, said staff being adapt-- ed to be disposed in engagement with one of the supports with its cutting-blade engaging a disk of said disk-holding shaft.
In testimony whereof, I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
