PATENT oFFlcE.
JACOB BUGHLI, 0F BADEN, SWITZERLAND.
COMBINED STEAM AND INTERNAL-COMBUSTION LOCOMOTIVE. v
Application filed November To zZZ'fwwm t may concern:
Bc it known that I, JACOB BUGHLI, a. citizen of Switzerland, residing at Baden, Switzerland, Felsemstrasse 2, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Combined Steam and Internail-Combustion Locomotives, ot which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to combined steam and internal combustion locomotives and has for its object to provide a locomotive which is not open to the disadvantages of those previously proposed. i
l-Iitherto diHicult-y has been experienced in finding the necessary space for the internal combustion engines wit-hout rendering the working'parts of the apparatus inaccessible or on the other `hand to prevent y difliculties arising during the working of the locomotive such for example as obscuring the drivers View of the track.
According` to this invention the internal combustion engines are so arranged adjacent to the steam generator that the axes of their cylinders' are approximately at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle, the crank shafts driven by the internal combustion engines being disposed parallel to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle and geared through toothed wheels to the axles which are also driven by the steam engii'ie.
Preferably the internal combustion engines are arranged on either side of the generator with the axes of their cylinders approximately vertical, the cylinders being of such height as not to interfere with the view of the track from the drivers cab.
One construct-ion ofthe locomotive according to this invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, in which- Fignre'l is a side elevation.`
Figure 2 is a plan, and
Figure 3 a sectional end elevation.
In the construction shown the steam gencrater a of the locomotive has disposed on either side of it the groups of cylinders 7) of the internal combustion engines, the internal combustion engine being so arranged that the axes of their cylinders are at right angles to the longitudinal a-xis of the ve- 5, 1923. Serial No. 672,753.
hicle and approximately vertical. The internal combustion engines drive crank shafts c which are parallel to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle and these crank shafts drive through two bevel pinions d d a countershaft e which in turn` drives a crank shaft g through pinions f f the crank shaft g being' coupled by rods L to the driving wheels z.
lVith such an arrangement great power can be obtained from a large number of relatively small cylinders and these cylinders can be so dimensioned and arranged that the drivers viewk of the track from the cabl is not obstructed. At the same time the torque acting on the crank shaft is rendered uniform owing to the relatively large number of interna-1 combustion engine cylinders.
I claim:
l. In a combined steam and internal combustion locomotive the combination of the internal combustion engines so disposed adjacent to the steam generator that the axes of their cylinders are approximately at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the locomotive with crank shafts arranged parallel to the longitudinal axis of the locomotive and geared through pinions to the axles also driven by the steam engines.
2. In a combined steam and internal combustion locomotive the combination of the internal combustion engines so disposed adjacent to the steam generator that the laxes of their cylinders are approximately at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the locomotive, with crank allel to the longitudinal axis of the locomotive and geared through pinions to the axles also driven by the steam engines, the cylinders of the internal combustion engine being so arranged on either side of the generator that their axes are vertical, the cylinders being of such height as not to interfere with the view of the track from the drivers cab.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses. y
JACOB BUCHLI. Witnesses:
