IMPROVEMENT IN MlLK-STRAINERS.

Specification formingpart of Letters Patent No. 152,981, dated July 14,1874; application filed 'February 16, 187 4.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSEPH F. DoNKIN, of Grayson, Stanislaus county, State of Galifornia, have invented a Strainer for Milk- Fails, &c.; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are sufficient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention without further invention or experiment.

My invention rela-tes to an improvement in strainers, such as may be used for milk-pails and in other places 5 and it consist-s in the use ot' an elastic wire or other spring, around which gauze of the strainer isiitted, and the whole is then inserted into a sort ot' hoop or recess which is formed in the bottom, or the spout where the strainer is to be used, so that the latter is at all times easily removable when worn out, or for the purpose of cleanin 0.

Referring to the accompanying' drawings for a more complete explanation of my invention, Figure l is a perspective view, showing my strainer attached to a pail. Fig. 2 is a seetion. Fig. 3 is a plan view. Figs. 4 and 5 show its application to other vessels.

A is a pail to which my strainer is to be attached. B is the discharge-spout, which is secured to the top of the pail, as shown. This spout may be struck up by a die, and will then have a recess formed, as at C. I then make an elastic ring, D, of metallic wire or other suitable substance which can be compressed, so as to be placed in the recess or hoop C, where its elasticity will retain it firmly. To this ring I secure the gauze or wire cloth E of the strainer, generally by iolding or winding it about the spring-wire, and the whole can then be placed in the recess, where it will remain firmly seated.

By this construction I ain enabled to con struct a strainer which can be easily removed at any time for the purpose of cleaning, and when the gauze is worn out it can be easily replaced without having recourse to a tinshop. g

lt will be manifest that my strainer is easily applied to the side of a pail, or to the bottom of any vessel which may be used as a strainer, with but slight modication.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-

-A strainer consisting of the wire cloth or gauze E, secured to an elastic expanding hoop, D, and placed in the recess or hoop C, substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
