WALTER BRUCE WILLS, 02h" BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
STRAINER.
Speciication of Letters Patent.
Patented June 24., 1919.
Application led December 6, 1918. Serial No. 265,514.
To all whom c't may concer/n.'
Beit known that I, WALTER BRUCE WILLS, a citizen of th'e United States, residing at Baltimore city, State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Str-ainers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to strainers designed for domestic use, and more particularly to strainers which are provided with a supporting frame having a handle for facilitating' the use of the strainer. The invention has special reference tothe means whereby the connection between the supporting frame fand the strainer body is made, the object being to provide a simple, strong and durable connectionA as will be pointed out in the detailed description appearing hereinafter, and claimed.
In order that the invention may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and'in said drawing--4 Figure 1 is aside elevation of the strainer; Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof, and Fig. 3 is a sectional detail.
Referring specifically to the drawing, 5 denotes a strainer having the conventional cup-shaped form. The top of the strainer is reinforced by a sheet metal band 6 having a top bead 7. The handle of the strainer is a piece of wire which encircles the band 6 beneath the bead 7, as shown at 8, and has its ends twisted together as shown at 9 toy form a rigid shank having attached toV its outer end a wooden grip 10.
The strainer 5 seats in a stirrup composed of two metal strips 11 arranged crosswise, and extending beneath the strainer at the bottom thereof, and upwardly along the sides to the band 6.
As shown in Fig. 3, the bottom edge of the band has an inward and upward bend 12, and the upper endof each strip 11 has a downward ook-like bend 13. In assembling theparts, the wire fabric forming the;
strainer' body 5 is lapped over the hook shaped upper. ends of the'strips 11 and both are placed in the channel formed by the upward bend 12 at the bottom of the band` 6, said bend now seating beneath the hooks 13. Pressure is now applied to the lapping parts, and upon being pressed firmly together the strips 11 are securely anchored to the band 6 and the strainer 5 is tightly clamped to the band, resulting lin a rigid and secure joint or fastening between the parts.
The joint herei'nbefore described can be easily made, and the structure is simple and inexpensive. The crossing bottom portions of the stirrups 11 may be welded or otherwise rigidly connected.
I claim:
l. A strainer comprising a sheet metal band having a bead at its upper edge and being inturned fand upturned at its lower edge to form an upstanding annular hook, an open mesh body adapted to fit at its upper end in the lower end of the band, and a pair of sheet metal straps crossed beneath the bottom of the body and extending at opposite ends up the sides of the body, said body an'd said straps having their upper ends turned over outwardly and downwardly and engaged in the annular hook of the -band with the mesh body in surface contact with the band on one side and with the straps on the other side, and with the down-turned ends of the straps interposed between the inner upturned portion of the band and the opposite side of the mesh body.
2. A. strainer comprisingl a band having its lower end bent inwardly and upwardly to form an upwardly-directed open hook, a strainer body, and straps carrying said strainer body, the upper edges of the body and straps being bent together outwardly and downwardly to form a downwardlydirected open hook fitting in said jirst-mentioned hook formed at the lower edge of said band, the body' and straps lying ainst the inner face of the first-named hoo the body hook being in surface contact throughgut its length with the interior wall of said and.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
