SAFETY DRAIN'ER.
Application filed March 12, 1927. Serial No. 174,938.
This invention relates to safety drainers and shows a simplified construction tobe used in manufacturing, and we wish to secure protection on the parts hereafter shown and described, in order that we can use them in combination and as an improvement in the manufacture of a safety drainer for which a patent was issued to Nellie E. Sharpneck, on June 22nd, 1926, Number 1,589,486.
The object of this invention is to provide a safety drainage cover of extremely simple construction designed so it can be manufactured by dies, and other machinery in avery inexpensive manner and in such a way that the parts can be assembled and the drainage cover completed without using anything whatever to fasten the different parts together.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will be apparent from the following detailed description of a preferred embodiment thereof, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which drawings:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a safety drainer embodying this invention, illustrating the same secured. and in position .on a pan.
Figure 2 is .a side elevation thereof, illustrating the safety drainer partly in section.
Figure 3 is a vertical section, taken substantially on line A of Figure 1, and shows the circular screen frame at one stage of its manufacture.
Figure a is a vertical section, taken substantially on the line A of Figure 1, showing the circular frame complete with the screen in place.
Figure 5 is an outside, side elevation of the circular screen frame.
Figure 6 is a side elevation of the wire handle.
In the preferred embodiment of this invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings, 9 illustrates a pan having atits upper edge an outwardly extending lip or rim 10 and having a handle 6 secured thereto.
The safety drainer herein illustrated preferably comprises a circular frame 1 constructed of a thin portion of material, such as tin or the like, and is formed to correspond to the curvature of the upper edge or rim 10 of the pan 9, the frame 1 is of slightly greater diameter than the outside diameter of the rim 10 of the pan 9.
\Ve have herein illustrated in Figure 3, and Figure 1 how a circular portion of'wire screen 2 is secured to the circular frame 1, Figure 3 shows the circular frame 1 bent up in U shape with the inner side 12 bent over to form a circular flange 13, onthis flange the screen 2 is placed, then the outer part 11 of the circular frame 1 is rolled over and pressed down on top of the screen 2 this sccures it in place as shown by Figure 4.
The handle 3 is preferably of the construction as shown in Figure 1, and Figure 6, it is composed of a single portion of wire which is bent so both ends extend across the top of the drainer, where they are bent down and under to form projections 4-4 to fit into the recesses Z7 in the bottom of the circular frame 1 and extend on under the rim 10 of the pan 9 as shown'by Figure 2, on
the opposite side the wires are bent down with slight projections 55 which fit into the recesses 88, in this position the wire handle 3 is securely fastened to the circular frame 1, the wires are bent up forming two Y loops 14, the downwardly extending portions 15-15 go each side of the handle of the pan 9 and prevents lateral displacement of the safety drainer when the same is posit1oned upon the rim 10, the central portion of the wire forms the handle 3 which extends out on top of the handle 6 of the pan 9, and by merely holding the handle 8 and the handle 6 the safety drainer will be ,se-
curely held in position on theriin 10 no matter what position the pan 9 is turned or rotated to.
Having fully described a preferred einbodiment of this invention it is to be understood that we do not wish to be limited to i screen secured to the said frame, and a Wire cesses in the outside part of: the circular handle of parallel WllCS secured across the frame, with the wires extending out beyond said frame with the two ends of the Wire the circular frame far enough to form u 10 handle turned down and back to form inhandle for the safety drainer.
wnrdly projecting lugs, and at a point dim metrically opposite to the said lugs, two NELLIE 1*). SI-IARPNECK. inure projections are formed to fit into re- ELIEL L. Sl-IARPNIrICK.
