UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM CLAYTON MCLELLAND, OF HOUSTON, TEXAS. ASSIGNOR TO ERVINE 8c BISHOP, OF HOUSTON, TEXAS, A COPARTNERSHIP CONFUSED OF J. EUGENE ERVINE AND JOHN E. BISHOP.
CAN OR SIMILAR ARTICLE.
Application filed June 21, 1927.
My invention relates to a can, bucket or like receptacle, and the invention has for its general object the provision of a novel closure for the article provided with means to facilitate the opening of the cam or other article.
The manner and means whereby the above and other objects are attained will clearly appear as the description proceeds.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, it being understood that the drawings are merely illustrative of one form of the in vention Figure l is a vertical section 01 the upper portion of a. can embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a plan View of the can and its appurtenances as shown in Figure 1, part of the closure being broken away.
The body 10 of the can bucket or like article is provided with an annular member ll, the outer edge of which is seamed or headed over the upper edge of the body 10 to term part thereof. Said annular member 11 has a depending annular member 13 thereon provided with lips l t directed laterally inward at dili'erent points about the can opening.
Seated on the lips let is a ring 15 usually formed of wire, said ring constituting a frame for wire mesh covering 16. Above the ring 15 and mesh 16 a closure 17 is provided having a keeper 18 on the under side, with which engage arms 19 of ring 15. At the base of the arms are spring coils 20 to give resiliency to said arms and tend to raise the closure 17 to the dotted line position indicated in Figure 1, or to an approximate position.
The outer edge 21 01 the closure 17 rests upon the annular member 11 and, has a tight fit within the annular element 13. On
Serial No. 200,390.
the closure 17 at the upper side is a lever 29. fulcrumed to its ends on an arched member 23 or equivalent means and presenting a short arm 24 positioned to bear against the element 11 at the outer edge.
It will be evident that by lifting the longer arm of lever 22 and causing the shorter arm 24. to press downwardly on the can body at the seam 12, the closure 17 will be lifted from its tight lit in the member 13, thereby permitting the spring arm 19 to raise the closure.
I would state furthermore that while the illustrated example constitutes a practical embodiment of my invention, 1 do not limit myself strictly to the exact details herein illustrated, since, manifestly. the same can be considerably varied without departure from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
hat I claim is: p
l. A can or similar article including a body, a closure for said body and a lever tulcrumed on the closure and adapted to bear against the body to Facilitate removal of the closure; together with spring means beneath said closure tending to raise the closure.
2. A can or similar article including a body, and an annular member on said body, a ring seated on said annular member, a closure about said ring, and spring arms on said ring engaging the closure tendii'ig to raise the same.
3. A can or similar article including a body and an annular member on said body. a ring seated on said annular member, a closure about said ring, and spring arms on said ring engaging the closure tending to raise the same; together with wire mesh on said rin lVILLl AM OLA YTON MoLl lLLA N l).
