SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 551,985, dated December 24, 1895.

Be it known that we, FREDRICK MEYERS, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, and MATTHIAS STOVE- KEN, residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, citizens of the United States, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hooks and Eyes, of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention is to facilitate or expedite the attachment of hooks and eyes; and the invention resides in the novel features of construction set forth in the following specification and claims and illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of a hook and eye. In the drawings, the letter A indicates a hook or hook portion, and B is an eye or eye portion. The hook portion has penetrating prongs 0 provided with shoulders D. The eye portion has penetrating prongs 0 provided with shoulders D. The shoulders D and Dcan be readily formed by flattening or hammering the end portions of the prongs.

The blank for the locking-plate is cut or stamped to have a body portion 1, a cover portion 2 and a connecting strip or throat 3, the body portion 1 having lips or shoulder portions 4. At the same time a secure closure is effected as the prong-shoulders when exposed to a pull bear against the plate shoulders 4, which latter are strong or rigid enough to hold the prongs in place. The prongs having been passed through a piece of material or apparel and the locking-plate having been connected to the prongs as stated, the prongs are secured against disengagement.

An advantage of this structure is also that it can be readily detached, as by lifting the cover 2 a suitable distance, as by a twisting motion of the hook and eye to cause the pron gs to lift or pry open the cover a suitable distance, the prongs are freed to be lifted out of place or withdrawn from the plate.

What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In a hook and eye fastening, the combination with a pair of penetrating prongs having lateral shoulders, of a plate having at one end a plurality of upwardly curved shoulders, separated from one another, and between which the prongs are laid, with the shoulders of the prongs abutting the shoulders of the plate, said plate having a flexible cover adapted to close over the prongs and hold the latter down upon the main body of the plate, substantially as and for the purposes described.
