ROBERT PETTIT MARTIN, OF EAST ORANGE, NEW JERSEY.
METALLXC CLIP FOR FASTENING FLEXIBLE HANDLES 'IO BAGS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 6, 1909.
Application filed September 20, 1907. Serial No. 393,792.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ROBERT PELTI'T MAR- TIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Orange, Essex county, New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Iniproveinents in Metallic Clips tor Fastening Flexible Handles to Bags, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to metallic clips for fastening flexible handles to bags, and it consists in certain elements and combination of elements fully set out and claimed in the following specification.
in order that those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains may understand, construct, and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it referring to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification in which 7 Figure 1 shows a plan view of the blank from which my handle clip is formed. Fig. 2 shows in plan view the blank bent up at its outer portions as shown in Fig. 8. Fig. 3 shows the blank in section on line X X Fig. 2. Fig. 4: shows the blank bent upon itseli on line Y Y of Fig. 2 bringing the ends over toward each other. Fig. 5 shows the blank still further bent leaving the clenching prongs in vertical position. Fig. 6 shows the blank with the clenching prongs bent to enter the opening in one end of the blank. Fig. 7 shows an end View oi the blank wlth the clenching prongs bent into c the opening in one end of the blank, as it appears in use. Fig. 8 shows the clip cured to the handle of a bag in plan view. Fig. 9 shows the same in side view.
A. is the central portion. of the blank, A is one end portion and A is the other portion.
B. B. are prongs formed on the sides of D is a. ring hook held in the clip at its portion A in an eye formed by bending the ends of the blank upon itself.
E is a flexible bag handle held in the clip.
The method of securing the clip to the bag handle is shown so clearly by the drawings that it is not necessary to describe it further.
Having now fully described my invention and the manner in which I have embodied it, what I claim as ne and as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
1. bag clip consisting of curved end portions bent over upon each other to form a circular inclosure, one of said end portions being provided with an opening through it, the other having prongs projecting from its sides. and adapted to be closed upon a flexible bag handle, and secured thereon by entering the said prongs into the said opening and into the material of the said handle, substantially as specified.
Si bag handle composed of a flexible central portion; a metallic clip fastened to each end of said central portion; said clips being formed from a blank having prongs projecting from near the end of the blank, and a perforation near the other end, one end of said blank being folded over the other end, and the said prongs entered in the said perforation, and inclosing between the said end portions material of the central flexible portion, thus forming loop at the central portions of each of the said clips as bent over upon each other, to hold ring hooks substantially as specified.
in testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 18th day of September 1907.
ROBERT PETTIT MARTIN.
