Description

Mar. 3, 1925. 1,528,490 R. KlsLlNG 'HATBOX Filed` March 22, 1924 y Patented Mar. 3, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT oFFlcE.
HATBOX.
Application filed March 22, 1924. Serial No. 700,990.
To all who-m 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUDOLPH KIsLrNG, a subject of Lithuania, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hatboxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new anduseful improvement in hat boxes, andhas for its object to provide a two compartment box or a double box, each compartment being hinged to a central section in such manner that said central section will serve as a cover or lid to both compartments.
A further object of the invention is to so proportion and combine the compartments and central section that the former may be utilized to support the central section in an upright position when the compartments are open.
A Still further object is to combine with the suitable section a container for the reception of various articles or both sides of the central section.
With these and other ends in view, this invention consists in the details of construetion and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains, may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, in which Fig. l, is a perspective of a double hat box made in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a view showing the compartments open supporting the central section in an upright position, one of the compartments and the central section being in section, the other compartment being in elevation.
Fig. 3, is a central section of the box in its closed position.
Fig. 4, is an elevation of the central section. y c
In carrying out my invention as here embodied, 1 and 2 represent the two compartments of the box, each adapted to receive and contain a hat and in each of these compartments is secured a form 3 over whichy a hat may be placed and secured by passing a hat pin or the like through the hat and form, thus holding the hats in place when the box is being` carried or transported.`
Each of the compartments are preferably constructed `with an outer wall and an inner wall, the latter projecting beyond the edge of the outer wall to form the flange 4.
5 rep-resents the central section which serves asv a cover forboth ofthe compartments and 'to -which each 'of the compartments is secured by the hinges 6 and in practice I prefer that a flattened portion 7 be formed upon each of the compartments so as to more readily accommodate the hinges and for the further purpose of permitting the central section to stand in an upright position when both of the compartments are opened to the position Vshown in Fig. 2. The interior ofthe central section is divided by the partition 7 and said partition serving as the cover for both of the compartments when the box is closed and this closing of the box carrying the flanges 4 into the central section from each side of the partition, as clearly shown in Fig. 3.
Secured to the partition 7 is a mirror 8 'and one or more containers 9 for the holding of various toilet articles such asa comb, brush, whisk-broom and the like by which arrangement the box not only serves to store or transport two hats but also to serve as a dressing case.
10 represents a handle which may be of any desired size o-r shape secured to the central section for -carrying the box, it being understood that any suitable latch or lock may be utilized for preventing the accidental opening of the box or a strap may be passed around the flat portion 7 and beneath the handle and when properly buckled or otherwise secured will serve the purpose of a lock or catch.
, It is sometimes found desirable to provide a binding 1l which may be stitched or otherwise secured along the outer edges of each of the compartments thus strengthening the box and preventing thebreakage and wear of the corners thereof and where this binding is of black enamel and the remainder of the box or cloth covered material both a durable and handsome effect is produced.
While I have shown a single handle 10 secured to the center section a double handle may be utilized one section of which would be secured to one of the compartments while the other section would be secured to the other compartment in order that when the sections of the handle Wer-e grasped in carrying` the box the latter would be held closed Without any other fastening.
Of course I do not Wish to be limited to the exact details of construction as herein shown as these may be `varied Within the limits of the appended claims Without departing from the spirit of lmy invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is l. In a hat box oit' the character described, two compartments each of which has a double outer Wall, one layer of said Wall projecting beyond the other layer and forming a flange, a central section adapted to fit over these flanges, said compartments being hinged to said central section, a Hattened portion upon each of the compartments for accommodating the hinges, forms permanently secured Within each of the compartments, a mirror secured Within the central section, and containers also secured Within said central section.
Q. In a hat box of the character described, two compartments, the side Walls of each of which are formed of two layers of materia-l, one layer projecting beyond the other layer to form a flange, a flattened portion formed upon the side Walls of each of the compait ments, a central section also having' a flattened portion upon its side Walls, said central section being adapted to fit over the flanges @ach ef the compartments, @ed
means for hinging the central section together; y
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature. RUDOLPH KISLING.
