GEORGE r. MoENTIBE, or 'rornxmmsns.
MA'I'I'RESS.
Application filed larch 10, 1922. Serial No. 542,708.
To all whom it may concern I Be it known that I, GEORGE PQMCENTI'RE, a citizen of the United States, 'residin at Topeka, in the county of Shawnee and tate of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mattresses, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relatesto ,a sectional-.mattress comprising several elements or cushion sections held in proper relation toprovide a unitary mattress by a fabric casing or enclosure but so as to permit the ready removal of the sections or any desired number of the same.
Among the advantages of a mattress so made may be mentioned the possibility of shifting the sections from place to place as certain of them wear or become flattened or compressed more than other sections; convenience in shipping and storing and in airing the mattress; economy through replacement of such sections as may become soiled or worn orrequire renovation; the possibility of removing the sections one at a time for airing and cleaning, in case of illness, without disturbing the occupant of the bed.
While the manufacture of sectional mat-- tresses, of one kind or another, has been proposed heretofore, no mattress of this type, so far as I am aware, has been'designed capable of meeting practical requirements sufliciently togive such mattress any real utility or general acceptance by users. My invention, however, provides a. sectional mattress which is thoroughly practical for ordinary domes tic use as well as use in the sick room or hospital, and which, from the point of view of economy of manufacture as well as'the convenience of the user, will have all the advantages of the ordinary one piece mattress as well as those incident to a sectional mattress.
Morespecifically, the objects of my invention are, among others: to provide a sectional mattress with an enclosing casing of simple construction which permits the mattress sections to be readily removed while holding the same in proper relation against spreading or flattening; to make the mattress sections, and the casing also, so that there will be no ridges, or the like, along the lines of meeting of the sections; to form the casing so that it will protect the edges of the mattress sections, and preferably also the bottom, which latter is particularly subject to wear and soiling because of contact w th the bed spring; to construct the sections with Interior fabric diaphragms or webs, or
equivalent fabric strips so as to keep the mattress in shape; to make the casing so that the sections are reliablyheld in their places and the casing thereon without the need of any attaching devices. Other incidental objects will be referred to in connection with the following description of the preferred embodiments of the invention shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Fig. 1 is a View, in perspective, of one form of sectional mattress made in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the enclosing casing for the mattress sections.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional plan on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
- Fig. 4t is across sectional view on'line 44 of Fig. 1. i
Fig. 5 is a view, in perspective, of a modified form of the invention.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view 01' the casing, or enclosure, illustrating another modification. I
Referring first to Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive,
' the mattress here shown consists of six mattress'sections which are square, and an enclosure or coverlng formed wlth compartments for said sections. The number and one to another to provide a continuous inturned rim around the open upperside of the casing.
The mattress sections may be readily removed from and replaced in the casing. If the sections are made square they may be turned in any direction in the compartments of the casing. By these arrangements wear on the parts of the mattress may be equalized and anytendency of a certain area of the mattress to be compressed and flattened more than other parts may be offset. Webs 14 operate to hold the mattress in proper shape. Strips 13 contribute to the same result while retaining the sections in place.
In the modified form of the invention shown in Fig. 5, the casing consists of a bottom sheet 16 or equivalent fabric structure, side boxings 17, end boxings 18, retaining strips 19 along the upper edges of the boxings and diagonally arranged straps or strips 20. In this form of invention I ha ve' shown the mattress as comprising three removable sections 21, 22, 23.
Flg. 6 indlcates a further modification ot the outer casing or enclosure for the mat-.
- rangements, devices and combinations shown and described as additional modifications, other than the arrangements and constructions herein disclosed, might readily be devised without departing from the principles of the invention.
I claim:
1. A sectional mattress comprising, in combination, a flexible, fabric outer casing of box-like form and open on one of its horizontal sides, and provided on that side with inwardly extending retaining strips, and a plurality of independently removable mattress sections arranged within said casing with certain of their edges projecting under said retaining strips.
2. A sectional mattress comprising, in
combination, a unitary, flexible, fabric, outer casing .conslstmg of a bottom sheet and end and side boxings, said casing being open at the top, a plurality of mattress sections removably arranged in said casing, retaining strips extending inwardly around the upper edges of said casing, and fabric partition strips extending across said mattress and attached to certain of said retaining strips.
3. A sectional mattress comprising, in COlIlbilltItiOD, a unitary, flexible, fabric, outer casing consisting of a bottom sheet and end and side boxings. said casing being open at the top, a'plurality of mattress sections removably arranged in said casing, inwardly extending retaining strips around the upper edges of said casing, and fabric strips extending across said mattress between said mattress sections and attached to the boxings, bottom sheet and retaining strip.
4L. A sectional mattress comprising, in combination, an outer casing comprising side and end boxings and fixed retaining strips along the corresponding edges of said boxings secured thereto and having their ends joined one to another, and a plurality of independently removable mattress sections arranged in said casing with certain of their edges extending under said retaining strips.
5. A sectional 'mattress comprising, in combination, an outer casing comprising side and end boxings and inwardly extending retaining strips along the upper edges of said boxings secured thereto and having their ends joined one to another, strips extending across said casing and attached to certain of said retaining strips to keep the mattress in shape, and a plurality of inde pendently removable mattress sections arranged in said casing with certain of their edges extending under said retaining strips.
