BEDSIDE GUARD Filed Feb. 27, 1948 INVENTOR.

Patented May 29, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE BED SIDE GUARD Alfred T. Evers, Chicago, Ill.
Application February 27, 1948, Serial No. 11,530
2 Claims.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in Bed Side Guard and more particularly to an attachment which, when associated with a bed, will serve to guard against the occupant of the bed rolling or falling off the bed.
An object of the invention is the provision of an attachment of this character which will be simple in construction, inexpensive in manufacture, easy of adjustment with respect to the bed, and which is durable in use.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings showing the preferred form of construction, and in which:
Fig. l is a perspective view of a conventional bed showing my attachment associated therewith;
Fig. 2 is an elevational View of the side panel of the attachment embodying my invention;
Fig. 3 is a plan View of the bottom panel embodying my invention;
Fig. 4 is an end elevational view; and
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary sectional detail view of a portion of the bottom panel showing a modified form of construction.
My improved bed attachment includes a side panel ID. This side panel II] comprises a substantially U-shaped frame II, comprising a top bar I2 from which extend substantially at right angles with respect thereto parallel side bars I3. Within this peripheral frame I I, is a flexible panel I I, preferably formed of suitable cloth fabric. This fabric panel I4 is attached to the peripheral frame II by means of suitable clips I5. The side bars I3 extend beyond the bottom edge I6 of the panel I4, and inwardly of their end portions there is provided an enlargement II. This enlargement Il may be formed as an integral part of these side bars l3 or by a separate part frictionally fitted thereon.
My attachment further includes a bottom panel I8 comprising a peripheral frame including a crossbar I9 and side bars 20 extending parallel with respect to each other and braced in spaced relation by means of a rod 2|.
The ends of the side bars 20 provide socketbearing members 22 into the sockets 23 of which are adapted to frictionally fit the end portions 24 of the side bars I3 for removably connecting the side panel II) to, and in a position substantially at right angles with respect to, the bottom panel 20. The enlargements I'I limit the insertion of the end portions 24 into the sockets.
In use the bottom panel I8 is disposed between the mattress 26 and the spring 21 of the bed 28. The roller-like elements 25 will contact adjacent coils 29 of the bed spring and serve to retard movement of the panel I8 from beneath the mattress 26. In this position of the attachment, the side panel ID will extend above the top surface of the mattress 26 and thereby serve to guard against the rolling of a person off the mattress 26.
If desired, there may be two of such attachments employed, one on each side of the bed. When not in use the side panel Ill is removed from the bottom panel I8 and placed upon the bottom panel I8 beneath the mattress 26 for storage purposes. The entire attachment or the side panel I0 alone may be stored in other places, such as a closet or the like, but for convenience the storage may be beneath the mattress 26.
In Fig. 5 the roller element 25 is mounted gponga U-shaped, bend 30 formed in the cross- While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. An attachment for a bed comprising an elongated piece of fabric, a peripheral frame for the cloth fabric including a crossbar and oppositely parallelly extending side bars extending substantially at right angles with respect to the crossbar, a bottom panel adapted to be disposed between the spring and the mattress of a bed, spaced socket-bearing members on said bottom panel, the lower end portions of said side bars removably inserted in the sockets of said members to connect the fabric frame to the bottom panel in a position substantially at right angles with respect thereto, the bottom panel having roller means adapted for engagement with adjacent portions of said spring.
2. An attachment for a bed comprising an elongated piece of cloth fabric, a peripheral frame for the fabric including a crossbar and oppositely 5 parallelly extending side bars extending substantially at right angles with respect to the cross- REFERENCES CITED The following references are of record in the file of this patent:
