This invention relates to mattresses in general and more partcularly to mattresses for use in babies cribs, although it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to such use since it is capable of use in a bassinet. Also, the prin- -the occupant. Asa result the weight of the .bed

clothes does not exert a pressure upon the feet of the occupant of the bed. This is particularly advantageous inthe case of an infant or a young child.

. It is a further object of the present invention:

to provide a structure of the above mentioned character the sides of which are so arranged as to inhibit heat transfer so that the occupant of the bed will be kept quite warm.

- It is a still further object of the present invention to provide a structure of the abovementioned character over which the bed clothes may be placed and held rmly against displacement.

It is a still further object of the present invention to provide a mattress structure having elevated sides at the foot portion of the4 bed which, with the bed clothing, can form an air pocket to keep the occupant of the bed warm and wherein the bed lclothes though elevated at the foot of the bed taper downwardly towards the head of the bed to come in contact with the occupant and thus protect the chest and neck of the occupant from cold.

While the principles of the present invention are particularly applicable to a mattress structure for accomplishing the above mentioned results, that is, wherein the ,sides and foot portion are made of mattress material, it is within the purview of the present invention tovmake the sides and back portion of non-mattress material such as, for instance, of wood. This still preserves the features of maintaining the bed clothes elevated from the feet of the occupant of the bed and of preventing displacement of the bed clothes due to restlessness of the occupant of the bed, while at the same time permitting some heat transfer, as may be desirable during the summer months.

In Figure 1 there is shown at I an, ordinary standard type of babys crib, which may have the usual type of bed spring therein, said crib having a head portion 2, a foot portion 3, a side portion 4 and, perhaps, anv additional side portion between the head and foot portions, opposite the side portions 4. That part of the strap 23 which extends along the back ll and from the back to the points 25-25 is preferably of elastic material, like rubber, so that the strap is elastic. The elastic strap permits some stretching of the strap. The strap is preferably encased in a casing of cloth or the like, the cloth being shirred, as indicated at 26, to permit stretching of the strap. The bed covers 21 rest upon the inclined sides l5 and are then passed between the mattress and the strap 23. 'I'he covers are thus securely but releasably held in place by the strap and are held inelevated position, above the feet of the occupant of the bed by the sides I5-I5 and the back por-v tion Il of the mattress. The bed covers 21 extend over the back Il of the mattress, on the outside of the mattress, that is, between the mattress and the rear wall 3 of the crib.

The entire mattress unit may be removed from the crib and used in any convenient `place outside of the crib. This is due to the fact that the mattress together with the pad I has sufficient resiliency to provide the necessary cushion eiect.

If desired the base portion 1 of the mattress may contain inner springs, as is usual in some types of mattress.

It is within the purview of thel present invention to provide side structures such as l5--l5 joined by a back foot structure Il for use in any type of beds. The side structures are preferably of mattress material but not necessarily so. They may be made of metal or of wood. Of course, mattress type sides have more desirable heat insulating properties but in some instances this is not necessary.

The mattress of the present invention holdsi the bed covers suspended above the feet of the child in the bed. This allows ample space for air circulation under the covers while at the same time protecting the child from drafts. It

allows the child almost complete freedom for@ kicking and other movement under the covers and prevents the child from disarranging the covers or uncovering himself. 'I'he cover tapers downwardly towards the neck and chest of thel child and thus prevents escape of the warm air' from beneath the covers 21. In case of sickness hot water bottles or an electric pad can be secured to the sides I5 or to the back l I, as needed.

In compliance with the requirements of theV patent statutes I have here shown and described a preferred embodiment of my invention. It is, however, to be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise construction here shown, the same being merely illustrative of the principles of the invention. What I consider new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In a, bed, a bed mattress comprising a base portion having longitudinally extending sides forming a shallow trough for receiving a bed pad, at the head of the mattress said sides being of a height substantially equal to the thickness of a bed pad, said sides tapering from adjacent the head of the mattress to a maximum height "at the foot of the mattress sufficient to support bed covers above the feet of an occupant of the bed mattress, said base and sides constituting one integral structure of mattress material, and means for holding bed covers across the tapered sides of the mattress.

2. A mattress comprising a base portion having longitudinal sides extending upward from the base to form a shallow trough for receiving a bed pad, said sides being tapered vertically upward from adjacent the head end of the mattress towards the foot end and being joined at the foot end of the mattress by a transverse side which extends upwardly from the base to substantially l the maximum height of said longitudinal sides Vmattress having an upstanding rim along the sides and along the foot end of the mattress, said rim being of maximum height above the top -of the mattress base at the foot end of the bed and tapering to a minimum height above the top of the mattress base towards the head end of the mattress, the height of the rim at the foot of the mattress being sufficient to support bed covers elevated over the feet of an occupant of the bed.

4. A mattress comprising a base having substantiallythe same average thickness at the foot end cf the base as at the head end thereof, said mattress having an upstanding rim along the sides and along the foot end of the mattress, said rim being of maximum height above the top of the mattress base at the foot end of the bed and tapering to a minimum height above the top of the mattress base towards the head end of the mattress, said rim being of mattress material and an integral part of the mattress and extending to va height at the foot of the mattress sufficient to support bed covers elevated over the feet of an occupant. of the bed.

5. A mattress comprising a base having substantially the same average thickness at the foot end of the base as at the head end thereof, said mattress having an upstanding rim along the sides and along the foot end of the mattress, said rim being of maximum height above the top oi. the mattress base at the foot end of the lbed and tapering to a minimum height above the top of the mattress base towards the head end of the mattress, said rim being of mattress material and an integral part of the mattress and extending to a height at the foot of the mattress suicient to support bed covers elevated over the feet of an occupantof the bed, and means for resilientlyl holding bed covers in place across said rim, said means comprising a tensioned strap releasably secured to the mattress and extending along the sides and across the foot end of the 'mattress rim.
