lClaim.

This invention relates to a new type of mattress construction comprising interchangeable layers of various fillers and interchangeable parts.

Broadly, it is an object of this invention to produce a mattress of simple and durable construction that can be manufactured at a reasonable cost.

More specifically, it is an object of this invention to provide a sanitary and hygienic mattress that is comfortable, easy to assemble and to take apart, thus being easy to clean.

Another object of this invention is to produce a mattress which will remain dustless and odorless because of its separate layers allowing free access of air circulation.

Another object of this invention is to produce a mattress cover that will contain various layers comprising the mattress, the mattress covers being removable and easily washed and ironed and will retain its original size and shape because it will be made of pre-shrunk and durable material, thus making it sanitary.

Another object ofthis invention is to produce a mattress that will be suited to the individual requirements of the person since the layers are interchangeable, being composed of an' inner spring unit, cotton pad or cotton felt-pad, kapok or hair pad or any combination of such pads or any thickness of such pads to comprise the proper hardness or softness desired by the individual. Any combination of pads of different types and thicknesses may be used with or without an inner spring unit combination pad.

Another important object of this invention is that such interchangeable pad mattress can be used by persons susceptible to hay-fever and asthma since many such people suffer because of the various types of mattress fillers used. y

Another object of this invention is to produce a neat looking and perfect fitting mattress because of the adjustable and perfect fitting cover.

Another object of this invention is to produce decorative and effective mattress covers because of the interchangeable nature of suchl covers.

Another object of this invention is to produce a perpetual and interchangeable mattress economical to maintain at an inexpensive cost of upkeep, since the various pads can be purchased separately.

Another object of this invention is to produce a mattress cover which can be easily cleaned in the event of frequent soiling.

Another object of this invention is to produce interchangeable pads, half the width of a double sized bed, so that one person can sleep on a combination of soft padsV and an inner coil spring unit, while the other can sleep on a hard combination of pads including a wood board beneath such pads, which would be advantageous for curvature of the spine.

Another object is to improve the appearance of the bed by having an apron attached to the lowermost cover'or pad-cover that will cover the bed spring to give the appearance of a box spring, at the same time being hygienic and inexpensive. 1g

Referring to the drawing in Fig. 1, numeral I0 represents the top of the mattress cover having side II sewn thereto along edge 35, said side con- 35 taining a series of fasteners I2, along the outer edge to receive opposite half Il of said fasteners which are attached to one end of fastening strips I3. A similar side I5 acts as the lower side of the mattress cover and is attached by sewing or w other means along edge IB to the bottom of the mattress cover I'I. Along edge I6 there may be attached an apron I8, which may be either flat or pleated. This apron will fall around the bed spring (not shown) to improve the appearance of the bed. It is not essential but is used for the purpose of appearance only. Along the edge of side I5, there is attached a series of fasteners I2, to receive the opposite fastener` which is attached to the opposite end of strip I3.

The entire cover is made in various sizes to conform to the standard size beds, either single, three-quarters or double. 'Ihis cover may also be made in special sizes. Such pads are interchangeable so that a person may choose the most desirable combination to give the most beneilcial result for the individual person.

In Fig. 2, 22 represents a cover pad which may be used as the top and bottom of a mattress, such pads contain snaps along the side edges for fastening to strips 23 secured along the edges of side 24. Between pads 22, Iwhich may be of any` type of construction or hardness, there may be diiIerent illlers or pads or an inner spring unit, depending upon the degree of hardness that the individual prefers'. 'Ihe top and bottom 22 may also represent a cloth cover instead of a pad and the side edges 25 and `22 may be of cloth so that the entire unit may act as a mattress cover.

In Fig. 3, cover I0 is fastened by strip Il, containing fastening means ll which may be fastened to lower cover I5 and the entire cover may contain multiple layers of interchangeable pads `containing diil'erent types of fillers for different degrees of hardness. Fig. 3 shows four layers; however, there may be less than four or more than four, depending upon how thick such layers are made and how much pressure it is desired to place upon such layers.

Fig. 5 shows a section of a bed divided along its length so that two people can sleep in the same bed; each side, however, may contain pads of different thicknesses and resiliency or an inner spring unit so that each person will have half or any division of the bed suited to his or her lndividual requirements. For instance, the right part may containan inner 4spring unit with a pad above and below the inner spring unit, the entire right part of the bed being comparatively soft. Dlu'ing diilerent seasons of lthe year it may be desirable to change the inner pads to produce a mattress that may be cooler or warmer to sleep upon. It is also desirable to change pads for sanitary reasons and to keep such a mattress dust-proof. I claim:

In a mattress, separable top and bottom pad members, each comprising filling material en-v closed between fabric covers, a illler unit enclosing band consisting of a fabric strip extending around the side and end edges of the mattress, a series of strips extending outwardly from the upper and lower edges of the band, and complementary fastener ,elements carried by the strips and the vedgeportions `of the top and bottom pad members for detachably securing the pad members to the band to provide a closed illier unit receiving housing.
