L. SCHREIBER STUDIO COUCH 1937 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed May 27 HM INVENTOR.
A 0775 Jcv/if/ifv? ATTORNI Patented Dec. 13, 1938 PATENT OFFICE STUDIO COUCH Lotte Schreiber, New York, N. Y.
Application May 27', 1937, Serial No. 145,017
., va Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in studio-couches, and more in particular it relates to means for readily conditioning the couch as for day timeor night time use, that is to say for use either as a lounge, or as a bed with its mattress, blankets, sheets, etc., respectively.
The need for such and similar double use or convertible features of furniture arises to meet requirements where space is valuable, and due to a tendency to .designfurniture and furnishings with a view to coordinating practicality and low cost with style and appearance.
More specifically this invention has to do with the type or style of day couch which appears as a .full fashioned although leg supported box frame or supporting base upon which is posit'ioned and rests a suitable removable upholstery section or body, both frame and upholstery body preferably harmonizing in style to make this a comfortable piece of furniture although of stylish and compact appearance.
As a negative characteristic this style of couch differs from others in which a. bed frame or chassis of any description with the mattress and other auxiliary bedding thereon, is usually entirely concealed by a draped or pleated removable cover piece.
However, in the style of couch herein contemplated it has been necessary to apply and place the auxiliary bedding such as sheets, blankets, etc., over the couch for the night and to remove them and store them away in the morning, which of course involves the remaking of the bed for sleeping in the evening.
The invention therefore contemplates the design of a couch of this type, style, and appearance, which nevertheless is capable of being readily ar -l quickly conditioned for its respective uses.
Objects are to simplify, reduce and expedite the manipulation which is incident to preparing the couch for day or night time use respectively, and to avoid the repeated remaking of the bed for night time use in the course of daily routine; and furthermore to design 3. thus convertible 4,5 couch which is stylish in appearance.
I propose to attain these objects by applying to and surrounding the upholstery section proper, alias a body of bedding or flexible mattress-like body, with a special covering fitted and con- 50 structed to conform to the shape of the upholstery. This covering being adapted in a readyto-use manner to the upholstery section simulates the features of appearance although convertible of a day couch of a desired type and 55 style. The special cover is quickly and convenmains exposed but may be .of a construction, ap-
pearance and design to go harmonically with the 10 quasi upholstery section thereon.
Features of this invention lie in construction of the novel cover piece-and in the manner and means in and by which the marginal portions thereof are drawn together to become lodged or 15 interposed between the mattress and the supporting frame of the couch.
Another feature has to dowith the manner in which the base portion or supporting frame of the couch on the one hand, and the couch cover 20 on the other hand, are adapted to each other constructively and decoratively, to make for a practical unitary design of desirable appearance.
The invention possesses other objects and fea tures of advantage, some of which with the fore- 25 going will be set forth in the following description. In the following description and in the claims, parts will be identified by specific names for convenience, but they are intended to be as generic in their application to similar parts as 30 the art will permit. In the accompanying drawings there has been illustrated the best embodiment of the invention known to me, but such embodiment is to be regarded as typical only of many possible embodiments, and the invention is 35 not to be limited thereto.
The novel features considered characteristic of my invention are set forth with particularity in the appended claims. The invention itself, however, both as to its organization and its method 40 of operation, together with additional objects and advantages thereof, will best be understood from the following description of a specific embodiment when read in connection with the accompanying drawings in which: I Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the bed frame carrying the bare mattress-like body.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the mattress-like body with the sheets and blankets in place.
Fig. 3 is a view showing the novel couch cover as it is being applied to cover the bedding shown in Fi 2.
Fig. 4 is a view to show the couch in finished arrangement for day time use and with the bedding concealed under the detachable couch covering.
Fig. is an enlarged part-sectional view of the couch as arranged according to Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a bottom detail view of the mattresslike body with novel couch covering applied thereto.
Throughout :the Figures 1 to 6 there is shown as an example thebedor base or supporting frame of a couch, having legs II, and the frame as shown may be said to be of a full fashioned box type and to beef a. construction and appearance to suit the general purpose herein contemplated. A novel couch cover piece 12 is shown in some of the figures. The figures are to illustrate stages in the arranging of the bedding on the supporting frame in and in particular the features and manipulation of the novel cover piece 12.
More specifically, in Fig. 1 the supporting base frame it] is shown to have placed on it a bare mattress-like body 13. The frame itself (see Fig. 5) is shown to comprise frame box portions [4 to constitute the sides and Ila to constitute the ends, and to be provided with a usual arrangement of supporting bed springs 15. The step of arranging additional bedding upon the mattress is shown'in Fig. 2, sheets 18 and 46a. as 'well as a blanket I! being shown to be spread over and tucked around'or drawn under marginal portions of the mattress. This figure can be said to show the couch ready for night use. On the o her hand if its condition for day time use or lounging is to be restored the novel couch cover will be applied as illustrated inFig. 3, whereupon the couch then appears in as trim a shape as shown in Fig. 4 simulating a daycouch of the desired style with no visible indication of its being ready for double use.
The nature of the couch cover per se and its more detailed construction appears more clearly from Figs. 5 and 6. These show that the couch cover 12 is tailored and constructed substantially to fit the outline of the mattress-like body augmented by the bedding arranged thereon.
The construction of the couch cover as illustrated according to one embodiment thereof has its marginal portions drawn together by suitable elastic s retchable elements provided in and along the edge portion thereof, and these edge portions will therefore lodge between the mattress and the supporting frame when the couch cover is in place and the stretchable marginal portion has sufiiciently conracted as shown in Figs. 4 and 5.
In Fig. 6 the contracted marginal portion of the couch cover is more clearly shown in a bottom view upon the mattress thus covered. More in detail there can be distinguished that the elastic means or stretchable elements comprise individual elastic portions i8 provided to contract the corner sections of the cover, and relatively non-stretchable elements If! to connect the elastic portions I8 with one another.
The handling and manipulation of the novel couch cover is substantially self-explanatory from the drawings. After the mattress and the auxiliary bedding have been arranged as shown in Fig. 2 (whereby the storing away otherwise of the auxiliary bedding has been obviated), the cover I! is applied as indicated-in Fig. 3 by successively placing the respective corner portion of the cover over the corresponding corner portions of the mattress-like body or body to be covered, the body remaining substantially unmoved and in place although portions thereof, for instance the cor ner sections, may be lifted or bent as shown to ease them into the corresponding corner portions or pockets of the cover [2.
After the cover piece is in place the couch appears in its normal day time condition for lounging as shown in Fig. 4 from which it is noted that the frame [0 as well as the couch cover piece l2 bear the identical decorative pattern, and it is apparent that the surface lines of this design and its general style are adapted to be free from dust or dirt catching pockets or the like, and that the quasi-upholstery section thus established substantially corresponds in shape to or matches the horizontal supporting area therefor of the "frame.
and to marginally hug said body, so that the cover piece marginal portions are maintained marginally between said body and said horizontal supporting surface, in a manner to give said body the appearance of an. individual upholstery section of the couch, said cover piece being readily removable and thereby exposing the bedding body ready for use.
2. A studio couch according to claim 1, in which a rectangular frame has its sides and ends defined by substantially linear oblong outer surfaces.
3. A studio couch according to claim 1, in which a rectangular frame has its sides and ends defined by substantially linear oblong outer surfaces, and has supporting leg portions at the corners of the frame for spacing the same from the floor.
4. A studio couch according to claim 1, in which a rectangular leg-supported frame has its sides and ends defined by substantially linear oblong outer surfaces, and has an exterior that matches the exterior of said top cover piece in appearance.
5. In a convertible studio couch in combination a horizontally extending supporting base conopening and adapted and constructed to fit over and to marginally hug said body of bedding, so that the cover piece marginal portions are maintained marginally between said body and said horizontal supporting surface, in a manner to give said body of bedding the appearance of an individual upholstery section of the couch, said cover piece being readily removable and thereby exposing the bedding body ready for use.
6. A studio couch according to claim 1. in which the top cover piece has elastically stretchable elements provided and effective to contract the corner sections of the cover to form stretchable corner pocket portions therein, said corner pocket portions to receive corresponding corner portions of said body of bedding, and comprising substantially non-stretchable elements alternating with said elastically stretchable elements, each end of each non-stretchable elernent being connected with an adjacent end of a stretchable eleierentiai margin of said stretchable opening 0! the top cover piece.
