P. S. TRUBITT May 28, 1957 SLIP COVERS Filed July 15, 1954 rr- 1 i! L-II/I FIG, 1
INVENTOR. P/zz/L v 5 7711.611? BY M United States Patent SLIP COVERS Philip S. Trubitt, Chicago, Ill., assignor to Sam Pass,
. 1 hicago, 11].
Application July 15, 1954, Serial No. 443,493
2 Claims. (Cl. 155-182) This invention relates to improvements in slip covers for furniture.
In the manufacture of slip covers for articles of furniture, such as overstulfed chairs and davenports, the covers of a given style are intended to be used by purchasers on furniture of the same generally designated style but which, having been made at different periods and by numerous furniture manufacturers, vary somewhat in size, shape and contours of some of the parts. Hence, slip cover manufacturers, in order to avoid making and marketing the huge number of covers of specific sizes which would otherwise be required for the numerous sizes and styles of furniture in use, have made covers which by adjustment of portions could be used on articles of furniture of several manufacturers, notwithstanding such variations in size and contour. The present invention relates specifically to a slip cover for the back rest and shoulders of an article of furniture, which might actually be formed as a portion of a one-piece or unitary cover for an article of furniture, such as a chair or davenport, but which is shown herein as an independent back rest and shoulder cover portion.
One object of the invention is to provide an improved back rest cover having attached shoulder cover portions which are so designed as to enable them to be adjusted neatly in position in use on articles of furniture, the backs of which may be of different heights and the shoulders of which may vary materially not only in height, but in contour and in width and thickness.
The improved slip cover section is thus relatively simple to use, since it can be adjusted in neatly fitting relation on the article of furniture. The improved shoulder cover sections exert tension crosswise of the back rest and rear panels and aid in retaining the same against disarray while in use.
Other advantages of the improvements will be apparent from a consideration of the following specification and the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a front elevation, somewhat in perspective of a chair (shown in dotted lines) with an improved slip cover section incompletely adjusted in position thereon;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view looking at the disclosure of Fig. 1 angularly and from the rear;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged broken view showing a shoulder cover section in section along a vertical median plane.
In the Figs. 1 and 2, a chair is shown by dotted lines and as having thereon a slip cover portion embodying the present improvements. The cover comprises a front or back rest panel 11 extending from the top portion of the chair back over the back rest 12 down to the seat 13 with sufiicient material at the lower end to be tucked into the space 14 between the seat and the back rest. The width of the panel 11 is adequate to cover the back rest, not including the shoulders 15 of the chair, with some of the panel 11 tucked into the spaces between the back rest and the rear ends of the arms 16.
To the upper end of the panel 11, which is shown extending slightly over the chair back, a rear panel 17 is "ice secured by stitching along the seam Hi. The lower end of the back panel 17 may be provided with strings 19 extending from the piping at the edges of the panel. The strings may be tied about the rear legs of the chair to retain the panel in place.
Secured to the panels 11 and 17, at the edges thereof, are shoulder cover portions 20. The portions or sections 20 are formed of originally rectangular members provided witha member (four being shown) of elastic straps 21 extending thereacross on the inner surface of the members, the material being stitched to the straps 21 while the latter are in distended relation. As the elastic bands or straps contract, the material of the members 20 in the region of the bands is gathered uniformly as indicated. The gathered portions are indicated by numerals 22.
The gathered or elastic bearing portion 22 of each shoulder section 20 is stitched at the sides along seams 23 to the edges of both the front and rear panels, but the flap portions 24 of the sections 20 above, and the flap portions 25 below, the gathered portion-s 22 thereof are not attached to the panels 11 and 17, but are left free. The upper flap portion 24 of each of the shoulder sections 20 can be tucked under the overlying portion of panel 11 at the top of the chair back and can be smoothed out to 0 provide neatly fitting coverings for shoulders of the chair.
The lower free portions or flaps 25 provide adequate material to cover the portions of the chair backs intermediate the gathered portions 22 and the arms of the chair, and surplus parts of the free portions 25 can be tucked into the space at the rear ends of the arms, or the surplus portions can be smoothed out over the top of the rear portions of the arms and hang pendant at the sides thereof and be covered and held in place by the arm cover sections of the undisclosed body cover of a complete slip cover.
The ends of the elastic straps 21 are stitched to the seams 23 which secure the shoulder cover sections 20 to the front and rear panels and when a cover is placed upon the chair back as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, the elastic is distended an extent, depending on the: width and thickness of the chair back. The elastic bands 21 thus exert tension crosswise of the panels 11 and 17 and tend to hold the panels neatly in place.
Where the cover is used on a chair having a back rest of medium dimensions, or on a chair of greater or less width than usual, the cover can be fitted neatly thereon, since the shoulder cover panels will distend or contract adequately to provide the desired olos-e fitting contact. Whether the shoulders are relatively square or rounded, the shoulder cover sections can be fitted neatly thereto by reason of the free upper portions 24 of the shoulder cover sections and the elastic bearing portions 23.
The undisclosed cover portion which covers the arms, seat, front and sides of an article of furniture may be of any suitable construction, such as that. disclosed in an application filed concurrently herewith.
Variations in specific details of the above disclosures may be resorted to without departure from the spirit of the invention herein shown and described.
I claim:
1. A slip cover for the front and rear surfaces of a back rest and the shoulders of an article of furniture comprising a front and a rear panel connected together at the upper edges and of a width to cover said surfaces between the shoulders, and shoulder cover sections each located at one side of said panels and comprising a transverse portion connected at the sides thereof to the adjacent side edges of said panels below the uppermost portions of the panels, transverse elastic strips in said transverse portions tending to contract the same into closely fitting relation about the lower portions of the sides of a back rest and provided with a flap extending upwardly 3 from the upper edge of said transverse portion having free side and top edges to be tucked under the margins of said panels above said transverse portion.
2. A slip cover for the front and rear surfaces of a back rest of an article of furniture comprising a front and rear panel connected together at the upper edges and of a width to cover said surfaces between the shoulders of the article, and shoulder cover sections each located at one side of said panels and comprising a transversely elastic section secured at the edges to the edges of said panels below the connected ends thereof and above the level of the arms of the article upon which the cover is positioned, said elastic section having a flap depending 4 from the lower edge thereof and a flap extending from the upper edge thereof and having free verticle and top edges adapted to be tucked beneath the margins of the panels bordering the shoulder.
