Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE MARTIN HUEBELL, 0E MOUNT Kisco, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED HORSE-COLLARS AND HAMES.
Specieation forming part of Letters Patent No. 152,801, dated July 7, 1874; application iiled November 13, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTIN HUBEELL, of Mount Kisco, in the county of Vestchester and State oi' New York, have invented a new and Improved Combined Collar and Haines, ot' which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l represents a front View, and Fig. 2 a side View, of my improved collar.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of my invention is to furnish an improved substantial horse-collar, which is readily adjusted to the horses neck at every desirable point, so as to tit the same Without galling, and be quickly and easily taken ott' and applied.
In the drawing, A represents the halnes, of Wood or other suitable material, which are connected at the top by adjustable cross-bars B, fulcrumed by bolt and thumb-screw C, so as to admit thereby the opening and shutting of the haines for the purpose ot' putting on or taking o the collars. The cross-bars B may be extended or contracted by changing the fulcrum, and the hames thereby adjusted to the size of the upper part of the neck. The haines A are hung` on the neck by a pad, M, attached by strong leather straps, which pad allows the oscillation of the main body of the collar at t-he points N, while the pad remains comparatively still on the neck, and obviates the galling at that point. rI he lower part of hames A is provided With face-plates F, having projecting bolts E made with thimbles, and top washers secured rigidly by top nuts. The
curved latch or guide D is pivoted tou bolt E of one hame A, and has several holes, by which the Width of the collar may be adjusted to the lower part of the neck. The other end of latch l) is bifurcated for sliding over the bolt E of the other hanne, having teeth or notches at the outer side, into which a pawl, R, locks by the pressure of spring S. By means of the teeth of latch D, the collar is rendered adjustable in width for the usual purposes, without necessitating the frequent changes of the latch on its pivot-bolt. The pawl holds the latch, and thereby the hames firmly connected, so that they cannot blend inward at the point ofdraft, and gall the horse. A stop-pin of latch D defines the extent of adjustability. An additional stra-p, Gp, is applied to staple H, requiring unbuckling when taking oft' the collar, so that, by pressing on the spring-pawl, the latch is released, allowing the lower part of the collar to spread, to be then easily removed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-a As an improvement in horse-collars, the
harnes pivoted adjustably at the top, and connected at the lower part by a pivoted adjustable latch, which slides, with its forked and notched end, over the guide-bolt, and is locked thereon by a spring-pawl, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
