Description

UNITED 4STATES PATENT OEEICE.
DAVENPORT C. `MGGOY, OF JAGKSOIIVILLE, ILLINOIS.
BRIDL'E-BIT ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 278,576, dated May 29, 1883, Application led December 5, 1582. (No model.)
`.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVENPORT C. MoGoY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jacksonville, in the county of Morgan and State of Illinois, have in vented certain Attachments to the Bits ot' Bridles used upon Horses, ot' which the following. is a specification.
My invention consists of a cord made of any exible materialsuch as cotton, hemp, flax, leather, raWhide,india-rubber, or wire or similar materialpassing under the upper lip ot' the horse and over the upper teeth, each end of the' cord passing through a hole in the ring at each end'of the bit. One end of the cord has an iron loop fastened to it7 and the driving-line is buckled through both the bit-ring and the iron loop at the end ofthe cord. The other end has a similar iron loop with a swivel, into which that end of the cord passes, movable along the cord and fastened, and made stationary by the use of a thumb-screw, by which the length of the cord may be adjusted to the horses mouth, and the Aother drivingline is buckled through both the bit-rin g and the swivel-loop. When the bit is adjusted to the bridle and the cord passed under the upper lip of the horse, as aforesaid, and drivinglines fastened, as aforesaid, asharp pull on the lilies draws the cord over the upper teeth against the gumsof the horse, and enables the driver to completely subdue the horse.`
Drawing l shows the bit with attachment. A is the cord to pass under the upper lip of the horse. B B are the holes in the bit-rings through which the cord passes. C is the iron loop into which one driving-line is buckled,
also to the bit-ring. D is the iron loop at the other eud of the cord, into which the other driving-line is similarly buckled. E is the swivel of the "said loop D, around thevcord and movable along the cord. F is the thumbscrew .with which 4to fasten it at any point alongthe cord when adjusted to the size ofthe horse or his mouth. p
Drawing No. 2 shows the bit and attachment in the horses mouth.
Having fully described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent isj l. In a bridle, the combination, with the driving-lines, ot' the cord A, adjustably attached to the lines, and adapted to pass around the upper jaw of' the horse, beneath the upper lip, all substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the driving-lines andl the bit-rings, ot' the cord A, passing through said rings, and adj ustably attached to the driving-lines, all substantially as shown" and described.`
3. A bridle providedwith the attachment A, adjustably secured to the driving-lines by means of the devices E and F, all substantially as set forth. y
4. The combination, in a bridle, of lthe driving-lines, the bit, thebit-rings, and the at` tachment A, all arranged and operated substantially as described.
