UNITED STATES ALBERT W. ENGEL, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
PICTURE-"WOUN'IING DEVICE.
Application led May 22, 1922.
To all 'whom t mcqz/ concern.'
Be it known that I, ALBERT 1V. ENGEL, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pict-ure- Mounting Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
The purpose of this invention is to provide an improved device for securing photographs or other pictures and cards upon a mat, card, or other mount in a convenient and ornamental manner, particularly if such ,pictures are provided with a margin or border of appreciable width. It consists inthe features of construction shown and described, and as set forth'in the claims.
In the drawings Figure l is a face or plan view of a mounting device embodying this invention.
'Figure 2 is a face view showing the device appliedto one corner of a card or picture.
Figure 3 is a face view showing the device differently applied to one corner of a card or picture. l
Figure 4 is a face view similar to Figure l, showing a slightly modified form of the mounting device.
Like the picture mounting devices of my previous patents, such as Patent No. 1,386,- 771, dated August 9, 1921, the present in vention is in the nature of a corner fitting of sheet material such as cloth or paper gummed on one surface and provided with a slit through which the corner of the card or picture is inserted in applying the mounting device thereto, so that a part of the gummed area may be secured to the outer face of the card while the remaining area of the mounting device is secured to the mount itself. In the drawings, Figure lVV illustrates a corner fitting, A, of this na ture which is of angular outline and is especially designed for use with pictures having either plain or ornamental marginal areas or borders of sufiicient width to receive that portion of the mounting device which is to be gummed to the surface of the picture without requiring this part of the device to overlap any of the picture area proper. For this purpose the angular 0ut line of the fitting, A, includes a re-entrant angle formed between its adjacent sides, 1

and 2, and preferably a right angle, since nearly all pictures of angular outline are rectangular. The opposite outer sides or edges of the fitting', A, are designated at il and 4, respectively, and preferably also form a right angle so that when the device is ap plied as shown in Figure 2, said edges, f3 and 4, will coincide with the outer edges, B and B4, respectively of the picture card.
Preferably' about midway between the inner and outer angular outlines the fitting. A, has a right angular slit composed of the main portions, 6 and 7, and transverse terminal portions, 8 and 9, communicating respectively with the main portions of the slits at their outer ends, that is, remote from the apex of their angle. Then the fitting, A, is formed with rounded corners, 10, the terminal slits, 8 and 9, may connect with the main slits, 6 and 7, in curves, 11, so that when the fitting is applied as shown in Figure 2, these curves, 11, become parts of the outline of the visible portion of the fitting. Figure 2 is intended to illustrate a card or picture whose marginal area or border, B, is comparatively narrow, but still wide enough to accommodate that portion of the fitting, A, between its outer edges, 3 and 4, and the slit. Thus the area, C, of the picture proper is not overlapped by the fitting, and the latter adds an ornamental touch to the border, B. The terminal slits. 8 and 9, extend outwardly from the main portions, 6 and 7, of the slit by exactly the distance between said portions of the slit and the outer edges, 3 and 4, of the fitting: thus they serve to stop the fitting on the picture card with its outer edges, 3 and 4, registered directly over the edges of the card. Obviously the fitting must have some material extending outwardly beyond the ends of the slits, S and 9, and this is furnished by tabs or lugs, 12. which thus project from the respective sides of the :mgular outline.
When the border area is somewhat wider. as shown at D, in Figure 3, the fitting may be applied by inserting the corner of the card through the slit from the under or gummed surface of the fitting', A, instead of in the manner indicated in Figure 2. This renders the area of the fitting between the slit and the re-entrant angle of its outline visible on the outer surface of the card, while the remaining area adjacent the edges, 3 and 4, will lie under the card with said edgesY registeredwith the edges, D3 and D4, respectively, which meet to form said corner. A, thus adds anV ornamental touchk to the border, D, Without overlapping the picture area, E, as seen in Figure 3.
Figure 4L illustrates a modiiied design, A1, of the fitting in which the lugs or tabs, l5, are made with rectangular corners instead of rounded',.and in Which the terminal slits, 8 and 9, meet the main portions, 6aA and Ta, of the slit sharply at right angles, asshoivn at 16'. Consistently ywith this design, the corners, 17,V are made rectangular instead of rounded, as in Figure 1'; but the use and operation of the fitting is exactly similar to that already described.
l. A picture mounting device consisting of a corner ittingof sheet material gummed upon one surface forsecurement' partly to one corner of the picture and partlyto a mount therefor, andy for that purpose having an angular slit with trans-verse terminal portions extending away from the enclosed angle at the opposite ends of' the slit respectively.
2'. In a picture mounting device, as deiined inclaim l, the angle of said slit being a right angle.
3. In a picture 'mounting device as deiined' in claim l, the angle of Saidislit being a right angle and its terminalfportions extending respectively at` right angles to the main portions of the slit from which they7 lead'.
4f. A picture mounting device as defined in claim l, having an outline which includes a re-entrant angle pointingiinto the angleo the slit.
The visible portion of the fitting,
in a re-entrant angle which points into the angle of the slit. p
7'. In a picture mounting device as dieiined in claim l, the angle of the slit being a right angle and the lit-ting having aright angular outline Wit-h tabs or lugs extending therefrom opposite the*Y ends oiisaid! transverse terminal portions of the slit.
A 8'. In combination With a rectangular card orpicture, a mounting device consisting ofl a corner fittingl of sheet material gummedA upon one surface for securement .Y
partly t'o the cardV and partly to'themount, said fitting havingan outline Wliichin'cludes two-sides meeting at right; angles to register with the corner outline of the card, being formed With a slithaving outwardlyextend ing terminal portions which lie'respec'tive V ly at right angles to the edges of' the card inserted in them, thel fitting'- includ'ing tabs or lugs projecting respectively from its aforesaid sides beyond the ends of said terminal portions or" the slit for securement i to the mount.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand at Chicago, Illinois, this 17th day of May, 1922.
