F F I C E NEWTON W. IPARKE, OF BROOK, INDIANA.
GARTER.
Application filed January 27, 1922.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that l, NEWTON YV. PARKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brook, in the county of Newton and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to garment\sup porters and more particularly to garters, and the primary object of the invention is the provision of an endless adjustable elastic leg band, in which the necessity of a detachable fastener or coupling for connecting the ends of a leg band together is eliminated, thereby resulting in equal pressure on the leg and preventing of metal or rigid parts being forced into the leg, and the provision of novel stocking or sock engaging members which are adjustable circumferentially around the leg band.
Aanother object of the invention is the provision of a novel means for adjustably connecting the stocking engaging members with the leg band, said means being formed of flexible material and folded around the band, thereby rendering said means capable of conforming to the configuration of the leg and the preventing of rigid parts engaging the leg.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a novel means for forming the leg band, whereby the said band can be readily and quickly adjusted to the size of the leg.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of an improved garter of the above character, which will. be durable and efficient in use, one that will be simple and easy to manufacture, and one which can be placed upon the market at a reasonable cost.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which drawings:
Figure l is a perspective view of the complete garter.
ligure 2 is an enlarged vertical transverse section through a portion of the garter illustrating the novel means for connecting the stocking engaging members with the leg band.
Figure 3 is an enlarged detail perspective Serial No. 532,312.
view of the said novel means for connecting j the stocking engaging members with the leg band. y
Figure l is an enlarged detail perspective view of the loop and associate parts, utilized for permitting the connection of the ends of the leg band and to allow the adjusting of the band.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary circumferential section through the garter band illustrating the loop and the associate parts carried by the loop.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the letter A indicates the leg band; B and C the stocking engaging ineinbers; and D and E, the novel means fpor connecting the stocking engaging members with the leg band.
rThe leg band A includes an elastic'strap l0 of the desired width and formed of the desired material, suoli as elastic, cotton or silk webbing. The terminals of the elastic band or strap l0 are threaded through the loop ll, which can either be stamped from sheet metal or formed of wire and bent to the desired configuration. VThis loop ll is relatively narrow and is enveloped by the strap l0, and thus the contacting of the saine with the leg is prevented. This loop may be formed of some non-rusting metal if found desirable. @n each side of the loop 1l, theband l0 has threaded thereon sliding buckles l2 and 13, which can either be formed of some non-rusting metal or celluloid or the like. These sliding buckles can be of any preferred construction and includes the open frame la and the central cross bar l5. The terminals of the band or strap l0 are folded about and connected with each bar l5 of the sliding buckles l2 and 13.A It is obvious that by sliding the buckles l2 and 13 on the band that the size of the yband A can be adjusted to conform to the size of the leg. The loop 1l can have associated therewith a plate 16 of an ornamental character if so desired, in order to hide the same from view, and this plate is provided with rearwardly extending resilient arms or hooks 17, which are adapted to snap over the ends of the loop l1 as clearly shown in Figure l of the drawings.
' The stocking engaging members B and C can be of the usual character, and are preferably located at diametrically opposite lll points o n vthe band A, although this is purely optional as the members can be adjusted circumferentially of the band as lieretobefore stated. rllhe .stocking engaging members B and C each include a stocking clasp 18 which will not be described i-n detail as the saine may be of the ordinary construction or of a particular type. 1t is preferred, however, that the same be formed of some suitable non-rusting material. Each clasp 18 is supported by a depending strip 19, which can be formed of elastic Vmaterial if desired. This strip 19 can of course, be adjusted as to length, and a suitable buckle 20 is Vprovided for this purpose. As shown, the lower end of the strip 19 is .threaded through the clasp 18 and then served, While its opposite or upper end is threaded through the members D or E and then connected to the adjustable buckles 20. The means D and E for connecting stocking'engaging members B and C with the bandA are of a novel construction, and form an important part of the present invention as these members are permitted to -conform t0 the configuration of the leg of the user and to allow the stocking fasteners to be adjusted around the band A. Each of these members D and E are of the samev construction and each include a loop 21,V
which encircles the band A transversely and each loop is preferably formed of some flexible material, such as leather, canvas or the like. The loop 21 is formed by taking a strip of material and folding .the saine `tansversely intermediate its ends to provide the loop and the terminals of the strip are sewed together, as at 22, to form a depending attaching tab 23. The sewing 22 not `only defines the tab 23, but also the loop 21, as is clearly apparent by referring to Figure 3 of the drawings. The tab 23 is provided transversely With a slot 24 Which can be reinforced by suitable buttonhole stitching or the like 25. This slot is adapted to` receive the folded portion of the strip 19, forminga part of the stocking fastener B or C. By sliding the loops 21 about the band A, the position of the stocking clasps v18 can be adjusted to occupy a positiony which is best suited to the taste of the user. From the foregoing description, it can be seen that a garter has been provided of exceptionally simple and durable construction Which merely includes an endless or permanently enclosed leg engaging band `which can 'be adjusted to the size of the leg,
Adeparting from the spirit or scope of the invention; but,
' I claim:
1. A garter comprising an adjustable leg band, a loop 'slidably mounted upon said band and formed of a strip of vflexible material folded back upon itself and having its Vend portions-sewed together in face to face contact to provide a loop portion and a depending tab of a double thickness, the depending end portions forming the tab being provided with transversely extending registering slots having their edges provided with reinforcing stitching, a stocking engaging clasp, anda supporting strip for said clasp ,threaded through the registering slots and secured.
2. A garter comprising an adjustable leg band, Va loop slidably mounted upon said band and formed. of a strip of flexible material folded back upon itself and having its end portions sewed together in face to face contact to provide a loop portion and a depending tab of a double thickness, 'the depending tab being provided with a transversely extending slot, reinforcing means about .the edges of said slot, and stocking ,engaging means including a supporting strip threaded Athrough said slot and secured.
3. A garter comprising a leg encircling band, a slide slidably mounted upon the band formed of Yflexible material folded transversely intermediate its ends back upon itself and connected together to form a loop for encircling the band, and a depending tab, the tab having a slot formed therein, a stocking engaging clasp, and an adjustable strap connected to said clasp and threaded through said slot.
