Description

L. S. SCHUMAN CORSET Filed Dec. 20. 1923 w i h v nwE/vmn laws $60110 A ITORNEYS Patented Feb. 3, 1925.
NiTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
- LOUIS S. SCHUMAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
. CORSET.
T 0 a72 whom it may concern.
Be it known that I. Louis S. SCIIUMAN. a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of the Bronx, in the county of Bronx and State of New York, have lIllBlllIGCl a new and linproved Corset, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention has relation to wearing apparel and has particular reference to an improvement in corsets, the rincipal object in view residing in the prov1sion of a corset which is constructed so as to eliminate the usual contraction or squeezing of the body, with the resultant injurious effects on the wearer. i
As a firther object the invention comprehends a corset which functionsto retain the back in a straight line and an upright position, and to suspend or support the stomach from the upper and lower portions of the I back to reinforce the stomach supporting muscles, whereby inward pressure "against the small of the backis eliminated.
As a still further object the invention contemplates a corset equipped with a yieldable insert at the upper portion of the front to constitute a brassiere for holding the bust firmly.
As a still further obiect the invention aims to' provide a corset which is comparatively simple in its construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and which is highly etlic-ient in its purpose.
With the above recited and other objects in View the invention resides in the novel construction set forth in the following specification, particularly pointed outin the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it lacing understood that the right is reserved to embodiments other than those actually illustrated herein to the full extent indicated by the general Ineaning of the terms in which the claims are expressed.
In the drawings Figure l is a three-quarter front view of the corset in applied position.
Fig. 2 is a three-quarter rear view thereof in applied position.
Fig. 8 is a diagrammatic side view of the corset in applied position with. parts broken away and illustrating the lines of stress.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, the corset includes a front 10, a back 11 and sides 12 which sections are "preferably constructed of separate pieces of material secured together in any desired manner. Preferably one of the sides is detachably connected at its forward edge with the side edge of the front, either by hooks the elastic gnssets 14 at the. lower portion of the sides 12. A plurality of straight vertical stays 15 are secured within the back 11 and the same are of a highly resilient material which cause the stays to have a tendency to normally maintain a substantially straight line from top to bottom and at all times. The upper portion of the back and front 10 and. 11 have secured thereto the shoulder loops or straps 16 which support the corset on the body.
In'practice the back .11 which is reinforced by the stays 15 functions to suspend and support the stomach from the upper and lower-portions of the baclc as illustrated by the lines of stress in Fig. 3 of the' drawings whereby the medial portion of the back, indicated at A in Fig. 3, is slightly spaced as at .B from the small of the back of the wearer so that practically no pressure is exerted at this point in supporting or suspending the stomach. This arrangement serves to maintain the back in a sul'istantially straight line and in an upright position whereby a more youthful figure is given to the wearer and whereby v the injurious squeezing or contraction of the abdomen is eliminated.
It will lii'lllS be seen that the gist or main feature of the invention resides in the pro vision of a corset for supporting the stomach in which the stress or "supporting strain is impinged upon the upper part of the back or shoulder blades and the lower part of the back below the waistline so that the intermediate portion of the back is loose or free whereby an embracing contractive action. is eliminated at the medial portion of the body inorder thatundue inward curvature of the spinal column at this point is eliminated. The invention further provides in a corset an expansible and contractible section at the upper portion of the front ill) ' edge of the garment as is the case when a rigid brassiere is used. The elastic gussets 14 permit of a radial expansion and contraction of the lower portion of the corset where- 'by the wearer may comfortably assume a sitting or stooping posture.
I claim:
1. A corset comprising a body encircling member comprising front and rear portions of non-extensible material, said member extending above and below the waistline of the wearer, a plurality of vertical stays of resilient material located in the rear-portion and maintained in substantially straight condition from end to end and extending the full length of said rear portion for increasing the vertical rigidity of the rear portion and cause the same to-contact withthe wearer at about the shoulder blades and the buttocks and space away the corset at the small of the back, whereby to set up, diagonal circumferential lines of stress upwardly, and downwardly to support the medial front portion of the body of the wearer from the upper and lower rear portions of the wearer and to relieve the medial rear portion of the supporting strains.
2. A corset comprising front, rear and side sections of non-extensible material adapted to encircle the body of the wearer above and below the waistline, a plurality of ,resilient straight vertical stays located in the rear section only and extending sub stantially the full length of the rear section for increasing the vertical rigidity of the same and spaced horizontally from the small:
of the back of the wearer whereby to set up diagonal circumferential lines of stress upwardly and downwardly to support the medial front ortion of the body of the wearer, from t 1e upper and lower rear back portions of the body of the wearer and relieve the medial rear portion of the wearer of supporting strains, a brassiere section of expansible material at the upper portion of. the aforesaid front section and elastic means adjacent the lower ends of the side sections to the lower part of the corset.
