Description

W. G. KENDALL ROUGE PAD Filed D66. 29.
Patented Jan. 20, 1925.
UNITED STATES WILLIAM-G. KENDALL, OF NEWARK, NEW IJ'EIILSEY.
ROUGE PAD.
Application filed December 29, 1923.
T0 all 'whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, WILLIAM G. KENDALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rouge Pads, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in rouge pads and vanity cases for housing the same.
One of the primary objects of the present invention is to provide a rouge pad the base of which will present advantages over such articles as are now upon the market. The ordinary rouge pad base comprises a bottom und an upstanding peripheral flange which presents a sharp edge at the periphery of the compressed rouge or face powder cake, and as a consequence, the lady using the pad is liable to scratch or cut her fingers on this edge, and likewise, the powder puff employed is liable to be damaged. Therefore, it is one of the primary objects of the present invention to provide a rouge pad hase having a compressed powder cake retaining flange so formed as to overcome the disadvantage just noted.
Another object of the invention is to provide a rouge pad base having its pad retaining flange so formed that it will be exceptionably rigid and not liable to distortion such as would result in fracture of the peripheral portion of the powder cake retained thereby.
Another object of the invention is to provide, in combination, an improved vanity case and novel means upon the walls thereof and upon the periphery of the rouge pad housed within the case, for securely anchoring the said pad in place.
ln the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the article embodying the present invention, the lid of the vanity case being partly swung to open position;v
Figure 2 is a vertical transverse'sectional view on the 1ine'2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a detail transverse sectional view on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
ln the drawings, the rouge pad is indicated in general by the numeral l, and the vanity case in which the pad is housed, is indicated in general by the numeral 2.` The rouge pad embodying the invention comrises a base 3 consistin of a bottom 4 which is at and prefera ly circular, and
Serial No. 683,403.
an upstanding retaining flange which is indicated in general by the numeral 5 and w-hich extends continuously about the periphery of the said base 3. The flange 5 is formed of two plies, namely, an inner ply 6 and an outer ply 7, which are produced by striking up the peripheral portion of the sheet metal from which the bottom 4 is formed and then folding or striking down this struck up portion along a circumferential median line to provide a fold 8 which connects the upper edges of the plies 6 and 7 and, in fact, constitutes the true upper edge of the flange 5 as a whole. This fold is of rounded contour so that the edge of the flange is non-sharp and will, therefore, not constitute a cutting edge such as is ordinarily presented in articles of this class. Che ply 7 of the flange 5 lies snugly against the ply as best shown in Figures 2 and 3 of the drawings, and the flange as a whole .s preferably slightly curved inwardly, it oeing furthermore inclined inwardly and upwardly from its lower side so that the peripheral portion of a cake of rouge or face powder formed in the base will be securely retained in place. The compressed cake of rouge or face powder isindicated by the numeral 9 and is of the usual form and it is set into the shallow cup-like body comprising the bottom 4 and flange 5, and retained within Jthe said body by the said flange.
The invention, as previously stated, also `contemplates the provision of a novel vanity case Aand coacting means upon the wall of the oase and upon the periphery of the rouge pad for securely anchoring the pad in place within the case. The vanity case 2 comprises a body including a bottom 10, and a circumferential wall 11, and likewise, includes a lid 12 which is hinged as at 13, to the wall 11 of the body of the case and is provided, opposite the hinge, with locking means I4 whereby the lid lmay lbe securely held in closed position. So far as the structure of the case has been described, this is the usual form of case. However, in carrying out the lpresent invention, the wall 11 has its inner face formed with an undercut or groove 15 which extends continuously about the said inner face of the wall sub stantially at the juncture of the lower edge of the wall with the periphery of the bot tom 10.
The flange 5 of the rouge pad base 3, is
provided with a plurality, preferably three, of outstanding locking tongues 16 ;which occupy the same plane as the bottom 4 of said pad base and which preferably constitute integral radial extensions of the lower edge of the ply 7 of the said flange 5. It Will now be evident that upon inserting the rouge pad into the body of the vanity case, the tongues 16 will follow, at their outer ends, down the inner surface of the wall 11 of the said body of thecase and will finally spring into engagement, kat their said ends, in theumdercut l and will thus become locked and will, in turn, lock or retain the pad within the body of the case. It is to be noted that there is a slight separation of the plies 6 and 7 at their extreme lower edges, ask indicated by the numeral 17, so that the locking tongues 16 may be resilientlyshifted inwardly a slight distance suiicient to permit of them riding over the inner surface of the wall 11 and then, upon engagement of their outer ends in the undercut 15, spring into the position which they formerly occupied.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A base `for a compressed cosmetic upstanding peripheral flange for retaining the cake in position upon the bottom, the' tinuous, unbroken, rounded bend at the up-` per edges of the said pleskconnectingthe same.
3. A base for a compressed cosmetic:
powder cake comprising .an integral structure lncludlng a' bottom having its peripheral portion turned upwardly and inwardly throughout its circumference to form an' inner ply and turned back upon itself to form an outer ply lying in contact with the inner ply and (3o-extensive therewith, the bend connecting the upper edges of the plies being continuous, and unbroken, and transversely rounded. v
In testimony whereof Iaiiix my signature.
