'VANITY CASE.
Application filed .Tune 29, 1920. 4"Serial No. 392,851'.
To all whom t may concern;
Be it known-that 1,WILLIAM G. KENDALL,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the countyof Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new andv useful lmprovements lin `Vanity Cases, ot-
which the following is a'specification.
This invention` relates to improvements in vanity cases or similar 'containers for. toilet articles and has as itsygeneral object to providea novel means forsupporting and retaining such articles within the case proper.
One of the primary objects of the present invention is to providea supporting and retaining means so constructed that wheny arranged within the or container it Will serve eiectually to retain toilet articles such for example as rougefand face powder cakes within the case'and will not only be inconspicuous but will-on the other hand add materially to the artistic-appearance of the device as a whole. i
A further-object o'theinvention is to provide a supporting and 'retaining means for the purpose stated "adapted to serve not only these primary functions but also as a means for relatively bracing opposite walls of the case 0r container so as to prevent these walls being sprung inwardly if abnormal pressuresho-nld vbe brought to bear against them.
A further object of the invention is to so construct the retaining means that' in the factory the tablet or tablets m-ay be readily placed in position to ybe retained thereby Without likelihood of crumbling of the tablets or other damage thereto and this may be equallyas readily accomplished by the user of the case in replenishing the same with fresh tablets after thepriginal ones vhave been consumed. I
The article in -the embodimenty illustrated the same willl be adapted to support, in position between 4the tablets, one or more cosmetic stick holders as for example a lipstick and an eyebrow stick.
. A further object is to so construct the device that the means provided for supporting the cosmetic stick holders will not in any way interfere with the removal of the pads or. cakes when thlsbecomes necessary or desirable andto further so construct Ithe said supporting means that `when the said ocsmetio stick holders are in place thereon will be practically concealed, the said holders beinglocated side by side between the powder cakes or pads and the respective puffs which are provided in connection therewith.
It is afurther object of the inventionA to so construct the device that the said retaining and supporting means will serve also to separate the puffs provided in connection with the powder cakes so that there will be no likelihood of powder Vfrom one cake becoming mixed .with that from thevother cake, the cakes being ordinarily of different kinds.
Another important object of the invention is to provide means for securely holding the retaining and supporting means of the in vention withinthe case so that it Will not be disturbedor rejected from the case when the tablets are removed for replenishment.

Fig. 10 is a perspective view of one of the powder pads or cakes employed in this latter form. A
In the drawings the numeral 1 indicates in general the body of the vanity case or other similar container and 2 the lid thereot which lid is hinged at its rear side 3 to the rear wall of the body 1. This wall is indicated by the numeral 4 and the front wall of the body is indicated by the numeral These walls are connected by end walls 6 which are preferably of arcuate form so as to conform more or less accurately to the marginal contour ot' the circular po-wder tablets which are to be arranged within the bottom of the body, the bottom wall of the said body being indicated by the numeral 7. The lid 2 comprises a rea-r wall 8, a front wall 9, end walls 10, and a top` 11 and the lid corresponds in contour to that ot the body 1 So that it will snugly encompass'the upper open side of the body when the lid is in closed position. Preferably a mirror 12 is positioned within the lid 2 so that it will be in convenient position t'oriise when the lid is swung to the partly open position shown in Fig. 1. Any suitable type of catch 13 may be provided for retaining the lid in closed position.
The retaining and supporting device ot' this form of the invention is, like the case itself, preferably formed from sheet metal and in this instance the sheet metal is pret'- erably resilient. The device is indicated in general by the numeral 14 and is most clearly illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawings where it is shown detached from the. case proper. The said device comprises spaced side members 15 formed by inedially bending the blank from which the device is formed, and these side members are located in inclined planes diverging in a downward direction and at their lower edges: are provided with laterally projecting tlat wings 1G designed to rust upon the upper side ot the bottom 7 ofthe body of the case when the device is positioned within the said body. The said side members 15, for a purpose to be .presently explained, are provided each with a resilient retaining tongue 17 formed by making vertical incisions 18 in the 'respective side member 15 and a horizontal incision 19 which connects the lower ends ot' the incisions 18, and then springing out the material between the said incisions so that the tongues will be more sharplv inclined or curved outwardly than the. side members 15 and will therefore. project atI their lower or free end portions laterally beyond the planes of the. respective side members. Likewise it will probablyv be found expedient to slightly transversely curve these tongues so that. like the end walls 6 of the body of the case. these tongues will more or less contorni to the circular marginal contour ot' the powder pads or tablets to be retained within the case. Preferably each end wall of the body ot the case is indented to' provide a small protuberance 2O suitably spaced` above the plane of the bottom 7 of the said body, the lower portions of the tongues 17 being likewise spaced a short distance a'bove the said plane as most clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 5 of the drawings.
The powder pads or tablets are indicated in general by the numeral 21 and each com prises a cake or mass 22 of rouge or face powder compressed within a shallow cup shaped body 23, this body having a conical circumscribing wall 24 ot' smaller diameter at its top than at its bottom. When the retaining device illustrated in Fig. L1 of' the drawings is disposed within the body 1 ot' the case in positions substantiallyv midway between the ends (5, the pads or cakes/21 may be fitted into place within the lower portion of the said body 1 and pressed downwardly until their peripheral bottom portions ride over the respective protuberances 20 and the resilient tongues 17 so that when the pads or tablets are properly positioned the protuberances 20 and the lower end portions ot' the tongues will engagethe inclined or conical wall 24 of the respective pads thus retaining and locking the same in place so that their displacement will notI result from any ordinary use of the device as awhole and yet the pads or tablets may be pried or litted from engagement with the retaining means. It will be evident at this point that the retaining device constitutes likewise a. partition transversely dividing the interior of the body 1 of the case so that each pad or tablet is housed wit-hin an individual compartment and powder or d-ust from either tablet cannot become commingled with that from the other tablet or pad. In practice a powder puff 25 of any desired construction will be provided in connection with eac-h tablet or pad and will be retained within the respective compartment provided by the partitioning ot' the interior ot' the body by the retaining member. Thus the said member serves also as a means for retaining the powder puits within their respective compartments so that they too/cannot come into mutual contact.
In order that the member 14 may be securely held wit-hin the body 1, the rear and front walls 4 and 5 are each indented at spaced points to provide protuberances 26 which are slightly spaced above the bottom 7 so as to engage above` the wings 16 when the retaining member is fitted into place within the body. this arrangement being most clearly shown in Fig. 5 of the draw-` ings. Also at this point it mav be stated that the hinge 3 projects somewhat into the interior of the body 1,` and one upper corner ot' the retaining member 141 is notched'or cut-away as indicated by the numeral 27 so as to seat beneath this projecting or protruding portion of the hinge and further the body.
In order that'the member 14 may be adapted to support the cosmetic stick holders which in the drawings are indicated by the numeral 28, a supporting member 29 is stamped or Otherwise formed from a sheet- Ihetal blank and is folded medially as at. 30 to fit over the ridgel provided at the jimcture of the upper portions of the side members 15, indentations 31 being stamped in the side portions of the member 29 and.
extending into the said side members 15 ofthe member 40 so as to securely unite the supporting member 29 with the ridge of the member 14 in the manner clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 4 of the drawings. The side portions of the said member' 29 are out away along curved lines as indicated bythe numeral 32 so as to permit of passage of the powder pads or cakes 21 past these said portions in assembling or disassembling the said pads, and the intact portions of the side members are curved laterally to provide2 at their ends, concave supporting fingers 33 within the concavities of' which may be disposed the cosmetic stick holders 28, this arrangement being best illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings. In this manner the said cosmetic stick holders are sup-ported side by side between the powder puffs 25 and by their presence they substantially conceal the supporting fingers 33 so that the supporting means is scarcely perceptible and the said holders therefore resent a neat and attractive appearance w en arranged in the manner stated.
Figs. 6 and 7 of the drawings illustrate a modified form of the invention and in these figures the retaining and supporting member is indicated in general by the numeral 34. As in the first described form of the invention, this member comprises spaced side portions 35 and wings 36 corresponding to the side portions 15 and 16, and the said side portions 35 are formed with resilient tongues 37 corresponding in construction and ar rangement to the tongues 17. In forming this member, in the process of manufacture,
the blank is formed with incisions parallel to its end edges, and the material between these incisions and the said edges is turned up so as to provide laterally projecting curved fingers 38 extending in opposite directions from each end of the member 34 and corresponding in function to the fingers 33 in the previously described form of the invention. ln this form of' the invention the necessity of the separate piece 29 is obviated and the device may therefore be readily and economically produced. Except for the differences above noted, the structure and manner of employing the device in this latter form is identically the same as in the previously described form.
Figs. S and 9 of' the drawings illustrate a further modified form of retaining and supporting member, and Fig. 10 illustrates a modified form of compressed powder pad or tablet whichis particularly designed for use in connection with the member shown in Figs. 8 and 9. This modified member is indicated in general by the numeral 39 and as in the previously described form is made from a sheet metal blank. 1n the course of manufacture the intermediate portion of this blank is stamped with one or more corrugations 40 and it more than one corrugation is formed the corrugations will extend side by side and be divided by a ridge 41, the concave sides of the corrugations being presented upwardly so as to provide seats for the cosmetic holders. further comprises side portions 42 which extend downwardly perpendicularly from the corrugated portion 40, and lateral wings 43 which project outwardly from the lower edges of the said side portions 42. These side portions and wings correspond, except in the respects noted, to the corresponding portions of the previously described forms of retaining members. However, in this form of the invention the side portions 42 are provided each with a pair of spaced resilient tongues 44 which are stamped out therefrom and project outwardly along curved lines in substantially opposite directions so as to suitably engage the respective powder pads or cakes as shown in Fig. 8 of the drawings. One of these pads indicated by the numeral 45 is illustrated in Fig. 10 of the drawings and is of the same constructionL as .the pad 21 previously de scribed except that it is provided with a chordal side which is indicated by the numeral 46 and which -is engaged by the said tongues 44l as clearly shown in the said Fig. 8.
1t will be understood that in all forms of the invention the side members are resiliently connected and normally spread with relation to each other so that when the tongues carried `by these members engage against the compressed powder pads or tablets disposed within the body of the case, the side membersv will be compressed to a greater or less degree and, due to their tendency to resume their normal positions, will bear yieldably against the pads or tablets and hold the saine firmly against the end walls of the body of the said case.
This member Having thus described the invention,
what is claimed as new is:
1. The combination with a. vanity case, of a member disposed therein and dividing the case interiorly into compartments in each of' which is to be received a cosmetic pad or y the like, and means carried by and extending at opposite sides of the member for supporting cosmetic sticks or the like.
2. The combination with a .vanity oase signed each to bear against one side of a having prbtuberances upon the inner surface cosmetic pad or the like disposed within the "of its wall at the ends thereof, and a. member case and t0 1x1-ge the pad into engagement 10 disposed Within the case and constituting a, with the proturlmnce at the respective` end partitiony and comprising resiliently conof the case. neoted` side portions normally spread and In testimony whereof I aix mg signa-ture. provided with laterally deflected tongues de- WILLIAM G.
