tion to grip and retain a cigarette-in a cor-n rect position, and to quickly release and eject the cigarette when desired.
The invention contemplates the provision of a cigar or cigarette holder havmg gripping members arranged adjacent the socket of theholder and means for manlpulatm the same whereby they may be separate and projected from the socket for releasingl and ejecting a partially consumed cigarette, or for receiving the end of an unsmoked cigarette, after which the grippmg members may be caused to grip t e cigarette, and be drawn inwardly to a concealed position within the] socket of the holder.
One fome which the invention may assume is exemplified in the following description and illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. l is a view in plandisclosing the preferred embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the cigarette gripping members in extended position for the reception or discharging of a ci arette.
`io. 3 is a view in plan section showing details of construction.
Fig'. 4 is a side elevation with parts in section to sh'ow certain details of construction.
Referring more particularly to the drawin s, 1() indicates a cigarette holder provi ed with a mouth lece 1l and a stem 12, which arejconnecte by a threaded joint 13. The stem 12 in the present instance is formed in two sections, 14.- and 15, which are separably connected by a threaded joint 16. The section 15 of the stem is formed with a cigarette receiving socket 17, which is vin communication with a central bore 18 in the mouthpiece, throu h a passageway 19 and filtering cham er 20. The filtering chamber, as shown in Fig. 3, is
ltion 15. Vshell 21 and is .slotted as at 24 to permit in the socket 1T.
located in an enlarged bore formed in the stemsection 14, and is enclosed by a perforated shell 21. to contain absorbent material for preventing nicotine from being drawn through the mouthpiece with the smoke,..linto the smokers mouth, and in some instances to contain a medicament or disinfectant. The shell 21 is detachably connected at one end, to a shoulder 22 formed on a shank 23 which is' a reduced continuation of the stem sec- The shank projects into the smokedrawn through the stem to freely circulate through the absorbent material for the purpose described. A trap is also formed to prevent saliva from passing into the stem and reaching the tobacco.
Formed in opposite sides of the stem section l5 is a pair of cam grooves 25, mounted in which is a pair of arms 26 which are formed with a cam face corresponding in contour to that of the grooves. The arms 26 eac-h support a segmental gripping jaw 26a at `their outer end for gripping the end of a cigarette. It can be readily understood by referring to Fig. 3, that as the arms are moved outwardly, the (zo-operating cam surfaces mentioned will positively cause the end of the arms carrying gri ping-jaws to spread. Likewise, when t e arms are drawn inwardly the gripping jaws will be positively closed and will nest withrl`he gripping jaws are of a curvature that they will readily grip cigarettes of various diameters and securely retain them in correct position with their ends Within the socket 1T.
F or manipulating the arms 26, a sleeve member 27 is provided and is slidably mounted on the stem section 15. The sleeve is slotted at opposite sides as at 28 to accommodate the arms. These slots, however, are not continuous throughout the length of the sleeve, but are interrupted by a solid portion 19 which fits into a recess 30 formed in the outer edge of each arm. This connects the arms and the sleeve so that movement imparted to the latter will be transmitted to the arms. The inward movement of the arms is limited as the arms will wedge between the sleeve and the stem.
Secured at the outer end of the stem section 15 is a band 31, which is grooved to accommodate and guide the arms 26. The
This shell is adapted Q Lacasse Central bore oi' this band is slightly enlarged at its inner end to permit movement of the sleeve if?. 'The depth of the bore is such as to limit the outward movement of the sleeve as the end of the latter will engage the shoulder 32 in the band when the gripper arms have been suiiiciently extended and spread. y
In operation of the invention, the various parts of the device are constructed and assembled as shown in the drawings. The sleeve 27 may then be moved forwardly to extend and spread the grippino jaws 26a. The end of-a cigarette may. tillen be interposed between the jaws and the sleeve 27 manipulated to draw the jaws inwardly to grip the cigarette and retain the end thereof firmly within the socket 17 of the stem. It is' understood that smoke drawn through the stem will be thoroughly filtered in the chamber 20 before it can escape to the mouthpiece 11.
When the cigarette has been sutiiciently consumed, the sleeve may again be manipulated to extend and spread the gripping jaws to release and eject the stub.
It is obvious from the drawings that-the device may be easily and" quickly taken apart for Icleaning purposes, or for replacing the absorbent material in the filtering chamber.
While I have vshown the preferred form. ot' my invention, it is understood that various changes in forni,v pro ortion, combination and arrangement oparts may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
' Having thus described my invention, what l claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A cigarette holder formed with a mouthpiece and a stem, the latter having a cigarette receiving socket formed therein,
av plurality of grippingA jaws adapted to nest within said socket, 'an Aarm connected to each jaw and extending parallel t'o the rette holder comprising a moutha stem, cam grooves formed 1n the peri hery of the stem parallel to thev longituduial axis thereof, said stem having a cigarette receiving socket,an arm in each groove, a gripping jaw carried at the end of each arm and adapted to nest in said socket, means for moving the arms longitudinally in unison, and cam surfaces on the arms cci-operating with the cam grooves whereby the gripping jaws will open when the arms are moved in one direction, and close when the arms are moved in the other direction.
3. A cigarette holder comprising a mouthpiece and -a stem, said stem having a cigarette receiving socket formed in one end thereof, cam` grooves formed in the periphery of the stem parallel to the longitudinal. axis thereof, an arm in each groove, a gripping jaw carried'by the end of each arm and adapted to nest in said socket,
a sleeve slidably mounted on the stem and pivotally connected to said `arms for moving the arms longitudinall in unison, said arms being formed wit cam surfaces adapted to cooperate with the-cam` grooves whereby the gripping jaws at the ends of the arms will be spread when the arms are moved in one direction and be closed when the arms: are moved in the oppositedi'iection.
4. A cigarette holder comprising a mouthpiece and a stem, said stem bei formed in two threadedly connected sectlons, one of said sections being reduced in diameter and having a socket formed in the end thereof, cam grooves formed inthe periph-V ery of said reduced section and extending parallel to the longitudinal axis thereof, an arm in each groove, a gripping .jaw carried at the end of each arm and adapted to nest in said socket, a sleeve slidably mounted in said reduced section and pivotally connected to said arm, cam surfaces on said Aarms adapted to cooperate with the cam grooves whereby the gripping jaws will be spread when the sleeve is moved in one direction and be closed when thesleeve is moved in the opposite direction, -a band fixed at the socket end of said reduced section, grooves in said ban in" alignment with the cam grooves in the stem section to guide the-.arms during movement of the sleeve, movement of said sleeve being limited in one direction by said band and in the other direction by the enlarged portion of the stem.
