Referring more particularly to the drawin s, 1() indicates a cigarette holder provi ed with a mouth lece 1l and a stem 12, which arejconnecte by a threaded joint 13. The stem 12 in the present instance is formed in two sections, 14.- and 15, which are separably connected by a threaded joint 16. A trap is also formed to prevent saliva from passing into the stem and reaching the tobacco.

Formed in opposite sides of the stem section l5 is a pair of cam grooves 25, mounted in which is a pair of arms 26 which are formed with a cam face corresponding in contour to that of the grooves. The arms 26 eac-h support a segmental gripping jaw 26a at `their outer end for gripping the end of a cigarette. It can be readily understood by referring to Fig. 3, that as the arms are moved outwardly, the (zo-operating cam surfaces mentioned will positively cause the end of the arms carrying gri ping-jaws to spread. F or manipulating the arms 26, a sleeve member 27 is provided and is slidably mounted on the stem section 15. The sleeve is slotted at opposite sides as at 28 to accommodate the arms. These slots, however, are not continuous throughout the length of the sleeve, but are interrupted by a solid portion 19 which fits into a recess 30 formed in the outer edge of each arm. This connects the arms and the sleeve so that movement imparted to the latter will be transmitted to the arms. The inward movement of the arms is limited as the arms will wedge between the sleeve and the stem.

In operation of the invention, the various parts of the device are constructed and assembled as shown in the drawings. The sleeve 27 may then be moved forwardly to extend and spread the grippino jaws 26a. The end of-a cigarette may. tillen be interposed between the jaws and the sleeve 27 manipulated to draw the jaws inwardly to grip the cigarette and retain the end thereof firmly within the socket 17 of the stem. It is' understood that smoke drawn through the stem will be thoroughly filtered in the chamber 20 before it can escape to the mouthpiece 11.

When the cigarette has been sutiiciently consumed, the sleeve may again be manipulated to extend and spread the gripping jaws to release and eject the stub.

It is obvious from the drawings that-the device may be easily and" quickly taken apart for Icleaning purposes, or for replacing the absorbent material in the filtering chamber.

While I have vshown the preferred form. ot' my invention, it is understood that various changes in forni,v pro ortion, combination and arrangement oparts may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.

' Having thus described my invention, what l claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A cigarette holder formed with a mouthpiece and a stem, the latter having a cigarette receiving socket formed therein,

3. A cigarette holder comprising a mouthpiece and -a stem, said stem having a cigarette receiving socket formed in one end thereof, cam` grooves formed in the periphery of the stem parallel to the longitudinal. axis thereof, an arm in each groove, a gripping jaw carried'by the end of each arm and adapted to nest in said socket,

a sleeve slidably mounted on the stem and pivotally connected to said `arms for moving the arms longitudinall in unison, said arms being formed wit cam surfaces adapted to cooperate with the-cam` grooves whereby the gripping jaws at the ends of the arms will be spread when the arms are moved in one direction and be closed when the arms: are moved in the oppositedi'iection.

4. A cigarette holder comprising a mouthpiece and a stem, said stem bei formed in two threadedly connected sectlons, one of said sections being reduced in diameter and having a socket formed in the end thereof, cam grooves formed inthe periph-V ery of said reduced section and extending parallel to the longitudinal axis thereof, an arm in each groove, a gripping .jaw carried at the end of each arm and adapted to nest in said socket, a sleeve slidably mounted in said reduced section and pivotally connected to said arm, cam surfaces on said Aarms adapted to cooperate with the cam grooves whereby the gripping jaws will be spread when the sleeve is moved in one direction and be closed when thesleeve is moved in the opposite direction, -a band fixed at the socket end of said reduced section, grooves in said ban in" alignment with the cam grooves in the stem section to guide the-.arms during movement of the sleeve, movement of said sleeve being limited in one direction by said band and in the other direction by the enlarged portion of the stem.
