UNITED STATES.
JAMES H. RAND, OF NORTH TONAWANDA, NEW YORK.
1 mnnx. 7
Application filed April 14, 1922. Seriai No. 552,790.
- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES H. RAND,'a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of North Tonawanda, in the county of Niagara and State of New York, haye invented new and useful Improvements 1 n an Index, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to index devices of the type having movable index holders or panels for disp ay'ing the classified sub ectmatter of the indexes and more particularly to that type in which the index holders are mounted to swing into and out of a frame in which a plurality of such holders are arranged in juxtaposition on a pivot substantiall perpendicular thereto.
O jects of the invention are to provide an index device of the class described which is characterized by great convenience in inspecting the index material thereon, to permit the index holders or panels to be disposed in positions at angles to the plane of movement thereof when in extended or exposed position, and in general to make'such devices more accessible to the end that time may be conserved in the use thereof.
Typical species of the genus to which the invention belongs are shown by way ofexample in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a perspective view;
Figure 2 is a plan view;
Figure 3 is an elevation;
Figure 4 is a side elevation;
Figure 5 is a perspective view of a modi fication;
. Figure 6 is a plan View thereof; and
'Figure 7 is a section on the line 7-7 of 'Ihe' embodiments of the invention shown for the purpose of illustration comprise cabinets in which a plurality of index holders or panels are adapted to be nested in parallel relation and arranged for swinging movement upwardly and outwardly to positions in which the index portions thereof are'disposed outside the cabinet. As indicated in Figs. 1 and 2 the cabinet comprises a base 8, sides 9 and 10, and rear end 11, the
front end and top being 0 en. A rod 12 is mounted adjacent to the ront lower corners of the sides 9 and 10 and spans the op n ng etw n t e sid Up n thi red are mounted, for swinging movement into and out of the cabinet, a plurality of index holders or panels 13. To prevent the panelsfrom catching on each other as they swing along each other in and out of the cabinet, spacing means in the form of marginal flanges 13 are provided. Each panel has means for retaining thereon a plurality of columns of index strips or cards of any desired size and width. Such means may take the form of spring clips 14 which may be fastened to the panels in any desired manner, a preferred wavbeing shown in my co-pending application Serial No. 552,788, filed April 14, 1 922. The opening through which the rod 12 passes is preferably provided in a marginal strip or retainer 15 hinged to the lower edge of the panel at 16. In its two positions of rest, namely the position in which it is completely housed within the cabinet and the position in which the index portion of each panel is exposed outside the cabinet, means additional to the rod are provided for support ing the panel in the form of bumpers 17 of resilient material such as rubber fast on the base 8. To insure the substantially vertical disposition of the panels and to prevent them from inclining unduly within the cabinetto one side or the other, partitions 19 may be provided at spaced intervals.
In using this device the operator grasps the panel holding the desired index. material by the projecting, tab 18 and. swings the panel outwardly upon the rod 12 as a pivot. When the panel reaches its extended position shown in Fig. 2, the hinged joint 16 between the panel and the retainer 15 is disposed beyond therows of panels remaining within the cabinet so that the panel may be.
swung about a substantially vertical axis to either side as indicated in Fig. 2 so that the index material. onv both sides thereof is rfiadily accessible for inspection. When t e withln the cabinet it lies swung back to a position in which it is substantially in the plane of the retainer 15 and is then swung back into the cabinet about the rod 12. y
Figs. 5, 6 and 7 show a modified form of device in which a similar cabinet is provided but a different index holder is used. The index holder here shown comprises a anel is to be restored to its position back portion or retainer 20, substantially U-shaped in cross-section as shown in Fig. 6, which serves the purpose to a large extent of the marginal retainer strip shown in Figs. 1 to 4. This bak or retainer which is preferably stamped from sheet material is perforated adjacent to one end thereof at 21 to provide a pivot opening for rod 12. Hinged to each of the free edges of the U- shaped back are index holders or panels 22.
These panels are preferably provided with a marginal flange 23 extending completely therearound of such depth that the combined thickness of the two panels 22 is substantially equal to the thickness of the back .20. This flange may serve to hold the strips backs of a book for the inspection of the index material thereon.
By the provision of the hinged connection between the retainers 15 or 20 (which stay within the cabinet) the panels carrying the index -material may be swung to the position most convenient to the operator. The modified form shown in- Figs. :5, 6 and 7 has the additional advantage that 1t gives complete protection to the index material since the outer faces of the panels are of sheet material and present plane surfaces. In both forms of panels shown the marginal flanges add stiflness to the panel and serve as a protection for the index material thereon since they extend inwardly beyond the same. I
I claim:
1. An index device comprising a cabinet, a movable index panel normally disposed inside the cabinet but rotatable outwardly from the cabinet to a position where its face is exposed, and a pivotal support for the panel permitting it to swing about a substantially vertical axis when in exposed position. i I
2. An index device comprising a cabinet,
a holder having index indicia thereon normally housed within the cabinet, said holder being bodily rotatable to a position outside of the cabinet to permit inspection of said indicia, a retainer also normally disposed within the cabinet and pivotally connected to the latter, and a hinge connection between the holder and retainer.
3. An index device comprising a cabinet having an open end, a panel movable edgewise into and out of said cabinet and a mea er? 4. An index device comprising a cabinet,
an index holder normally positioned there in, a retainer hinged to. the lower edge of the holder, and means defining an axis about which the retainer may be swung to move the holder forwardly and out of the cabinet.
5. An index device comprising a cabinet, an index holder normally disposed within the cabinet having. a retainer device extending along its margin and hinged thereto, and a pivot member connecting one end of the retainer device to the cabinet and permitting the retainer with the holder to be swung outwardly from the cabinet.
6. An index device comprising a cabinet having an open front, an index holder normally disposed in a substantially vertical position within the cabinet, a retainer device hinged to the lower margin of the holder, and a substantially horizontal pivot rod connecting the forward end of the retainer device to the cabinet to permit the retainer with the holder to n be swung upwardly and forwardly from the open front of'the cabinet. v
7. An indexdevice comprising a cabinet open at one side, an index holding panel normally disposed in a substantially vertical position within the cabinet, a retainer also normally disposed within the cabinet, a hinged connection between the retainer and panel, and means pivotally connecting the retainer to the cabinet at a point adjacent to the open side of the latter.
8. An index device comprising a cabinet having an open front, an index holding panel normall disposed in a substantially vertical plane within the cabinet, a marginal retainer device hinged to the lower edge of the panel and normally disposed in substantially the same plane as the latter, and a pivot mem ber connecting the forward. end of the retainer device to .the cabinet and permitting the retainer with the anel to swing forwardly from the open ront of the cabinet.
9. An index device comprising a cabinet having an open side, a series of index holders normally disposed within the cabinet in substantially parallel lanes, a retainer de vice hinged to each ho der, and a pivot rod extending transversely of the open side of the cabinet and passing through openin s in the several retainers to define an axis a out which the retainers with the holders may be swung.
1( An index device comprising a cabinet having an open front, an, index holding panel normal y "disposed in a substantially vertical plane within the cabinet, a retainer extending along the lower margin of the panel an hinged to the latter, a pivot member con ecti g the f rward end'of the retainer to the cabinet, and a resilient bufl'er disposed within the cabinet upon which the rear end of the retainer normally rests.
11. An index comprising a' cabinet having an open side, a-retainer device normally dispose within the cabinet, means pivotally connecting the retainer device to the cabinet at a point adjacent to the open side of the latter, and a plurality of index holding panels hinged to the retainer.
