FILING DEVICE.
Application led March 2, 1927. Seria1 No. 172,071.
Our invention relates to improvements in of the device, and upon this flange the bottom filing devices, andthe object of our improve- 5 is adapted to rest, being simply slid into 55 ment is to provide a construction of such a place thereon and spotwelded thereto as character as to afford ease of assembly of the shown in Fig. 2. component parts during manufacturing The back 2, extends upwardly to a point operations without the use of screws, bolts flush with the shoulders 13 and along its top or rivets with the exception of the fittings edge is spotwelded one member 'of a hinge 60 for handles, name plate and lock, thereby 16, the other member of which is similarly greatly reducing labor costs without sacrificsecured to the cover 9. v ing appearance or utility but in fact rather The bottom 5 is provided with four adding thereto. Other objects include a conpunched-out projections 17, which serve as struction which readily lends itself to ease rests to suitably support and steady the box. 65 of accessibility to the contents of the device The extension 8 is also preferably formed providing rigidity and compactness and fire from one piece of material as shown in Fig. resisting properties, and the provision of an 5, which provides a front 18 and sides or adjustable working capacity. wings 19. The latter are formed with an We attain these objects by the mechanism upwardly extending ear 2O respectively, the 70 illustrated in the drawings in which like object of which will be subsequently pointed reference characters refer to like parts out more fully. The front .18 is also throughout the various figures, and in which shouldered at 21 similar to the shoulders 13 Fig. 1 is a perspective view of our 1mof the sides 3 and 4 and for a similar purproved filing device with the front extension pose, and also has a flange 21 similar to 75 portion shown 1n an open position. flange 14.
Fig. 2 1s a horizontal section on the line Referring to Fig. 6 to what may be termed l 2-2 of Fig. 3. the lining of. the device, for it is double Fig. 3 is a central vertical section on a walled throughout with the exception of the transverse plane, cover which obviously could also be so con- 80 Fig. 4 is a detail section on the line 4-4 structed, the member 22 is bent to form of Fig. 3. three panels namely, back 23 and sides 24 Fig. 5 is an exploded view of the outside and 25, which are flanged at 26, in the same members of the box. manner as the main body of the device, and
Fig. 6 is a similar -view of the inside memrest, in an assembled relation, upon the bot 85 bers. tom 5. The upper edges of the sides 24 and The improved filing device consists-of a 25 are turned over at 24l and 25 to form a baclr 2, sides 3 and 4, bottom 5, extension 8 slideway vwithin which is adapted to fit the providing a front for the device and a cover aforesaid fianges 14 of the sides 3 and 4, and 9 hinged to the back 2. The cover is adapted the top edgeof the back 23 is bent t0 form 9o to be locked to the extension 8 when they a flange 23 to limit the extent of the air are both in closed position by means 0f the space between the back 23 of member 22 lugS l1 WlllCll Wlll then enter lille 106k 12 and the back 2 of the Outer Walls 0f the desecured to the extension. vice.

The parts together as shown in Fig. 3 at A. lower edges of the back and sides are turned The panel 29 is bent over at 31 along its inwardly at right angles to form a narrow top edge to form a flange which is first 105 flange 15- extending aronnd these three panels hooked over the :flange 21 of member S* bef foreV the Welding operation. ,A second or false bottom 27 is then dropped into place. Flanges 32 anc 33 serve as spacing members to limit the extent ot the separation between the panel 29 and the iront 18 ot er:- tension 8.
Stops 3st are formed. by punching` the metal outwardly from the sides .242 and 25 of member 22 and therefore extend into the space between the sides 8 and 24- and fl and 25. The stops 3e are adapted to be engaged by the ears 2O on the sides et e JVension 8 to limit its movement in an cutwmd direction as shown in Fig. lI and Fig. 3.
To the side l is secured an index e id holder 35 and handle 3S. As this operation is subsequent to the assembly 'following which the final finish is applied, hoies 3'? are provided in the side 2st and one ot the .side wings 19 to atord access to the rivets by which the handle and card holder are secured in place atter the assembly and atl-er the application ot the final `finish. The panel 29 is also apertured 37 to ati'ord access to the rivets ot the lock l2.
It will be noted that the hi e stantially at the extreme bottom of the de` vice and therefore the extension 8 when opened will afford maximum access to the contents, the entire front swinging open instead ot only a portion thereof'. The construction as described is very substantial and the air space surrounding the body portion aids materially in protecting the contents more effectively against damage trom possible exposure to lire.
ln order to adjustably varythe working capacity of the devi e, provision may be made so that its effective depth trom the extension rearwardly can be shortened and in this way a device oi. large capacity can be manufactured without experiencing any inconvenience through the use ot an index common to liles et this general character which might otherwise tilt too tar forwardly or rearwardly when the device was only sparsely filled.
W7 ith this purpose in view we have shown in Fig. l strips 40 which are preferably spotwelded across the sides 24 and 25 ot the member 22. The strips l0 are shaped to form a number et loops il adapted to receive the angular-ly bent ends 42 ot a rod 43. It only a few papers or other matters are in the device the rod @may be held in position by the loops il relatively near the extension 8 so that when the latter is opened the action will be similar to a lile of shallow depth, and the contents increase the rod can be relocated further back in the deviee.
