It is another object of this invention to construct a combination radio and convertible cabinet system which is characterized by a cabinet having its front and top open, a hinged top cover for closing the top, a panel hinged on the to cover for closing a portion of the front, an doors hingedly mounted on the cabinet for closing the remainder of. the front.

It is a still further object of this invention to provide various compartments in the cabinet for holding a multitude of articles in a systematic orderly manner.

A still further object of this invention is to arrange the panel upon the cover in a manner so that in the closed position of the cover the panel is at right angles to the cover and in an open positlon it lies flat against the cover.

It is a still further object of this invention '35 to provide a means for allowing closing of the cover only when the panel is at right angles thereto so as to prevent accidental damage to the panel due to closing the cover when it is in any other condition.

A A still further object of this invention is the construction of a device of the class mentioned which is of simple, durable construction, desirable in use, and eicient in action, and which can be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost. For further comprehension of the invention, and ofthe objects and advanta es thereof, reference will be had to the o1- lowingdescription and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth. l

The device comprises a cabinet 10 having arms are arranged at both sides of the cabinet as clearly shown in Fig. 2. To close the cover .it is necessary to bend the arms upwards around their pivotal connection 17. Further details of these pivoted arms will not be given since they are generally known.

A panel 18 is hinged at its top edge 1 9 upon the underside of the cover14. This panel is capable of closing a portion of the opened front 12 of the cabinet. In Fig. 1 the cover 14 is shown closed with the panel 18 closing a portion of the open front. S'ide posts 20 are located at the sides of the cabinet and the panel 18 engages between the inside of the posts as clearly shown in Fig. 1. In the engaged position between the side posts 1t is at right angles with the cover and when the cover is moved to the vertical position it assumes a position iiat against it as shown 1n Fig. 2. Doors 21 are hinged along their outer vertical sides upon the post 20 and may be closed to close the front of the cabinet.

A lock 22 is mounted upon the panel 18 and is capable of latching and holding the cover and the doors 21 closed. For this purpose complementary elements 23 are attached upon the upper edges o'i" the doors 21 so as to receive the latching bolts 24 from the lock 22. The panel 18 is ornamented as indicated by reference numeral 25. Other ornamental designs may be used instead. A clock 26 is mounted upon the front of the panel 18 so as to be viewable when the cover 14 is closed or when it is in the opened position. A thermometer 27 and a calendar 28 are attached on the inside face of the cover 14 in a position so that when the coveris opened these parts are located below the panel 18 as shown in Fig..2.

A phonograph album 29 is attached upon one of the doors 21 for the purpose of storing records. Upon the other door 21 a letter box 30 is mounted. This letter box is accessible from the front of the door which is divided with a panel opening 31. From the inside the letter box is openable in that it is provided with a hinged cover 32. A barometer 33 is attached upon the front of one of the doors so as to be readable from the exterior when the cabinet is closed. Handles 34 upon the doors 21 allow for their opening and closing. Other ornamental handles 35 are mounted upon the central portion of the doors.21 for ornamental purposes.

The interior of the cabinet 10 is divided by a plurality of partitions so as to form various compartments. There is a horizontal partition 36 near the top at a height substantially at the lower edge of the panel 18 when the latter element is in its closed position. Another stationary partition 37 extends over a portion of the partition 36 and connects with a top hinged cover 38 and a glass panel. This hinged cover may be moved to a vertical position indicated by the dot and dash lines 38. At the front there is a vertical panel cover 40 which is capable of being opened by motion to a horizontal position indicated by the dot and dash lines 41. Within the compartment formed by the

38 and 40 there is a radio set 42. This radio set does not take up the complete compartment and a drawer 43 is provided at one side for use as a register drawer to hold money. At the other side of the radio there is a compartment 44 to be used for holding a phonograph. A measuring rod 45 is extended through one of the posts 20 and may be moved upwards as indicated by the dot and dash lines 45 to be used for measuring the heights of persons and objects on the floor.

A vertical partition 47 divides the cabinet into a compartment at the left which is used as a safe. A door 48 closes the safe and is provided with a combination lock 49. Within the safe there is a top drawer 50 for holding files 51. A second drawer 52 for holding safe vault record iles. A third drawer 53 for holding safety boxes 54 and the like, and a lower compartment 54 is adapted to hold books. A plurality of key holders 48 are secured on the inner side of the door 48.

Drawer 53 is made of double metal material or any other double material and con-l tains springs for holding the top cover in place instead of a lock. The springs are applied in a conventional manner and are therefore not shown in the drawings.

A horizontal partition 55 divides ed' the compartment to the right of the vertical partition 47. A door 56 closes a portion of the compartment above the partition 45 which is used for holding a typewriter 57. Small drawer 58 at the side of the compartment holding the typewriter is for the purpose of holding fountain pens, pencils, pen points and the like, and drawer 59, beneath the said drawer 58 is for the purpose of keeping stamps.

Another horizontal partition 60 is arranged within the compartment to the right of the vertical partition 47 to form a compartment for holding a sewing machine 61 and another compartment for holding a collapsible chair 62. The vertical partition 63 serves to divide these compartments. The sewing machine compartment is provided with 'an extendible drawer 64 so that the drawer may be extended and then used as a table as indicated by dot and dash lines 64 in Fig. 4 for the purpose of supporting the sewing machine.

Beneath the horizontal partition 60 there is a vertical partition 66 and another vertical partition 67. These vertical partitions divide oil" a compartment for holding a plurality of drawers 69 and a compartment for holding a drug chest 70 and a tool chest 71.

An extendible latch 72 is mounted upon the latch 72 is provided with a handle 74 at its rear end so as to be manually retractable. Dot and dash lines 62 in Fig.A 4 indicate the chair 62 in an opened osition so that it may be used for sitting on uring use of the typewriter or sewing machine.

A means is also provided for allowing closing of the cover 14 only when the panel 18 is at right angles to the cover. The purpose for this is that if the cover 14 'could be closed regardless of the osition of the panel 18, the panel would stri e against the member 38 and cause injury to the clock 26 and the glass of the member 38. The means referred to comprises a projection 76 upon the hinged point of the panel 18 and capable of abutting against the to end 77 of the connecting link 78 slidab y supported on the inner side of the cover 14. The lower end of the connecting link pivotally connects with one end a bell crank 79 which is pivotally supported at 80 upon the cover 14. The` other end of the bell crank is provided with a pin engaging in a peripheral groove 81 in a clutch member 82. This clutching member is coaxial on the hinge 15. The hinge 15 consists of a plurality of lugs 83 projecting from the cover 14 and straddling other lugs 84 from the top of the cabinet 1G. A pintle member 85 passes through these lugs to accomplish the hinge connection. The clutch jaw 82 is slidable upon the pintle 85. A spring 86 coaxial upon the pintle 85 normally urges the clutch jaw so that its teeth 87 engages in complementary teeth in one of the lugs 83.

When the panel 18 is at right angles to the cover 14 the member 76 holds the link 78 so that the clutch jaw 82 has its teeth 87 disengaged from the teeth in the lugs 83.

' Then the cover 14 may be moved upon its hinge. When the panel 18 is released so that it assumes a position flat against the cover shown in Fig. 2, the projection 76 releases the bar 78 wherein the spring 86 causes the clutch jaw to engage and hold the cover against pivoting. The pintle member 85 is pinned at 88 to one of the lugs 84 so as to be non-rotative. The jaw member 82 is keyed at 89 so as to be longitudinally slidable upon the pintle member 85 but non-rotative. This arrangement servesto hold the cover against hinging when the teeth of the jaw engage the teeth in the lu 83 and allows hinging when the parts are lsengaged.

The operation of the device is thought selfevident but it may be briefly reviewed by stating that the' combination safe and convertible cabinet system allows the storing of various articles in any orderly manner so that they may be found without much trouble.

It is to be understood that suitable electric lamps and bur lar alarm may be installed in my device w ich may be made of metal, wood or any other suitable material, also that the top 11 and the front 12 of the cabinet maybe kept dust proof by suitable glass cover.

While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is :f-

1. A cabinet open at the to and at the front side, a cover hinged at tiie top of the cabinet for closing the top, a panel hingedly connected on the cover for closin a portion of the open front, a pluralit o partitions within the cabinet dividing o compartments for the holding of various articles, and means for preventing closing movement of the cover when the panel is at an angle thereto of less than 90, comprising a clutch jaw, slidably and non-rotatively mounted to a hinge pin at the hinge edge of the cover, a lug fixed to the cover and having apertures engageable by said clutch jaw, a second lug ixed to said cabinet, means for fixing said pin to the second lug, means for disengaging the clutch jaw from said apertures when the panel is at right angles to the cover, and means for urging the clutch jaw into engagement with the apertures.

2. In a device of the class described, a cabinet open at the top and at the front side, a cover hinged at the topof the cabinet for closing the top, a panel hingedly connected on the cover or closing a portion of the open front, a pluralit of partitions within the cabinet dividing o compartments for the holding of various articles, and means for preventing closing movement of the cover when the panel is atan angle thereto of less-than 90, comprising a clutch jaw, slidably and non-rotatively mounted to a hinge pin at the hinge edge of the cover, a lug fixed to the cover and having apertures engageable by said clutch jaw, a secondI lug fixed to said cabinet, means for fixing said pin to the secondlug, means for disengaging the clutch jawl from said apertures when the panel is at right angles to the cover, and means for urging the clutch jaw into engagement with the apertures, said means for disengaging the clutch jaw comprising a clutch pin engaging in a peripheral groove in the clutch jaw, a bell crank pivotally supported upon the cover and supporting said clutch pin at one end, a linkslidably mounted on the cover and having its lower end pivotally connecting with the other end of the bell crank, and a projection upon the hinge edge of the panel and abuttable against the upper end of the link.

3. 4. In a device of the class described a cabinet open at the top and at the front side, a cover hinged at the top of the cabinet for closing the top, a panel hingedly connected on the cover for closing a portion of the open `front, a plurality of partitions Within the cabinet dividing off compartments for the holding of various articles, and means for preventing closing movement of the cover when the panel is at an angle thereto of less than 90.

5. A cabinet open at the top and at the front side, a cover hinged at the top of the cabinet for closing the top, a panel hingedly connected on the cover for closing a portion of the open front, a plurality of partitions Within the cabinet dividing oii compartments for the holding of various articles, and means for preventing closing movement of the cover when the panel is at an angle thereto of less than 90, comprising a projection from the hinged edge of the panel capable of depressing a link slidable on the cover, a bell crank connected with said link and operating a 'clutch jaw upon the hinged edge of the cover.
