INVENTOR MeZvLNeC D K85 Attorney Patented June 1 8, 1940 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFTQE PAD HOLDER AND PAD Melville Clement Dykes, Kirkland Lake, Ontario, Canada This invention relates to pad holders and pads and in particular to a device adaptable for cafes and the like wherein the checks may be easily inserted and withdrawn from the device.
An important object of this invention is to devise means whereby the usual stapled or perforated pad is abolished thus decreasing the cost.
Another important object is to provide a durable pad holder wherein the type of pad adaptable to the holder may be adaptable in addition to a filing system.
A further object is to increase the efficiency of the device by means of a spring leaf.
With these and other objects in view which may appear as the description proceeds the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically set forth, claimed and shown in the accompanying drawings forming part of this application and in which:
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the invention.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective view of the housing and cooperating parts.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary sectional view of the device with a pad therein.
Fig. 5 is a plan view of a leaf from the pad.
Referring more in detail to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views it will be seen the invention comprises a base ID of substantially rectangular shape and hinges II at one end of the said base. A plate I2 is hingeably connected to the said base the purpose of which will be explained in detail as the description proceeds. Side members l3 are secured to the base as strengthening means and to assist in housing the pad M. A housing l5 being a right angled plate hingeably connected at l6 across the end of the said plate has two leaf springs ll attached to the inner surface of the vertical portion of the said housing. A ratchet i8 is joined to each leaf spring to engage the aforementioned plate l2 as it is forced upward by a spring leaf I9.
Three ball tipped leaf springs 20 are secured to the under side of the horizontal portion of the said housing to unattachably restrain the said pad Hi from shifting or sliding.
As further means of unattachably securing the pad, two upright binder posts 2| are fixed to the said base I0. Slots 22 are cut into the plate l2 whereby the movement of the said plate may be unrestricted.
Spring fasteners 23 attached to the sides l3 engage the ends of the housing [5 as means of locking the said housing. The pad M has notched or V-shaped clefts 24 to facilitate removal of each sheet, the said cleft being enlarged at its point 25 to fit over the said binder posts.
From the foregoing description it will be seen the housing l5 may be swung back to allow the pad M to be placed over the binder posts 2| and then closed wherein the ball tipped springs 20 in conjunction with the plate l2 actuated by the spring leaf l 9 will hold the pad firmly in position. As the pad is used the said plate rises, held firmly for writing purposes by the'ratchet members Hi.
It is believed that the construction and advan- '15 tages of the structure shown may be apparent from the foregoing paragraphs taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings without further detailed description.
While the preferred embodiment of the invention has been disclosed it is understood that minor changes in the construction, combination and arrangement of cooperating parts may be resorted to within the scope of what is claimed Without departing from the spirit of the invention. 25
I claim:
1. A pad holder comprising a base, a pad supporting plate having one end hingedly connected to one end of said base, a cover plate attached to the other end of said base and adapted to extend over the free end of said supporting plate, means normally moving said supporting plate upwardly, and means carried by said cover plate for engaging the free end of said supporting plate for maintaining the same in its elevated position.
2. A pad holder comprising a base, a pad supporting plate having one end hingedly connected to one end of said base, a cover plate pivotally attached to the other end of said base and adapted to extend over the free end of said supporting 49 plate, means normally moving said supporting plate upwardly, and means for automatically engaging the cover plate with the free end of said supporting plate to hold the same in its elevated position.
3. A pad holder comprising a base, a pad supporting plate having one end hingedly connected to one end of said base, a cover plate attached to the other end of said base adapted to extend over the free end of said supporting plate, means normally moving said supporting plate upwardly, and ratchet bars carried by said cover plate adapted to engage and support the free end of said supporting plate in its elevated position.
4. A pad holder comprising a base, a pad supto one end of said base, a cover plate hingedly connected to the other end of said base adapted to extend over the free end of said supporting plate, means normally moving said supporting plate upwardly, vertical rack bars carried by said cover plate in the path of movement of said supporting plate, and resilient means urging said rack bars into engagement with the free end of said supporting plate to support said plate in its elevated position.
