Patented Apr. 1, 1924.
UNITED "STATES ADRON .I. BROOKBANK, or HUNTINGTON, wnsr' VIRGINIA.
ADVERTISING DEVICE non CHAIR ARMS.
Application filed October 19, 1928. Serial No. 669,503.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, ADRoN J .-BROOKBANK, a citizen of the United States, residing at State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Advertising Devices for Chair Arms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to advertising devices and has special reference to an advertising device for chair arms. 1
More particularly the invention consists of a combined chair arm and advertising device which may be built into chairs during construction or be applied to existing chairs by substituting the improved arm for that already in the chair.
One important object of the inventlon is to provide a device of this description of improved nature and which is so constructed as to avoid the employment of hinges, latches and the like.
A second important object of the invention is to provide an improved arm and advertising device wherein the application of the arm will not entail any weakening of the arm by cutting away parts thereof as by grooving or the like.
A third important object of the invention is to provide an improved combined arm and advertising device which is so constructed and arranged as to present a neat and pleasing appearance and wherein no additional thickness is necessary in the arm itself.
A fourth important object of the invention is to provide an improved device of this class embodying a novel spacing frame or spacer by means of which different when tisements may be separated from each other.
With the above and other objects in view as will be hereinafter apparent, the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a chair showing the improved device.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section through the device.
Figure 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 1 is an enlarged detail section through one side of the device.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of a portion' of the spacer frame used herewith.
In the embodiment of the invention herein illustrated there is shown a chair provided with a broad fiat arm 11. This arm is preferably of rectangular cross section and has, at its forward part, parallel sides. On this arm is carried a frame which consists of a lower or arm engaging portion having confronting chained sides 12 and a similar end 13, these parts being so spaced and proportioned that the frame may be slid over the arm and the sides and front endof said arm covered by the webs of the channels. Extending upwardly from this part of the frame is a rectangular upper frame portion 14c closed at both ends and of in verted L-shape in the cross section of its sides and ends. This frame is secured to the arm by small screws 15 passing through the lower flanges of the side channels and thus being inconspicuous and not detracting from the neatness in appearance of the device.
Within the frame 14 is placed a sheet 16 containing advertising matter and I preferably employ for this purpose a metallic or metallized sheet so that the advertisements displayed may be attractive. This sheet may be supported by a backing or padding 17 and on top of the sheet 16 is placed the spacer frame which is an open rectangular frame having sides 18 and ends 19. On the sides 18 are mounted the ends of the cross bars 20 which are designed to separate the space within the frame into a series of panels so that one advertisement may be separated from another. These cross bars 20 have their ends turned back as at 21 so that they may slide longitudinally of the frame 18 and thereby be adjusted to suit diflerent sizes of advertisements. More over, the cross bars, or some of them, may be slid entirely off the frame if necessary to accommodate certain advertising matter. On top of this spacer frame is a glass 22 which serves to keep the advertising matter clean and free from dust and dirt as well as to afford an easily cleaned sanitary surface for the chair arm.
In assembling the glass, spacer frame, advertising matter and pad, if used, are placed in the upper frame portion 14:. The frame is then slid on the arm 11 and secured by the screws 15.
There has thus been provided a simple and efficient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
It is obvious that minor changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the material spirit thereof. It is not, therefore, desired to confine the invention to exact form herein shown and described, but it is desired to include all such as properly come Within the scope claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
1. The combination With a chair arm; of a main frame slidably mounted on saidarm advertising matter'restingon said arnr within the frame, a spacing frame resting; on the advertising matter and including cross bars arranged to divide the advertisspacing frame mounted Within the main frame and including spacedside members and cross bars extending between the side members and having slidable connection therewith.
3. The combination-with a chair arm; of
a mainframeimounted on said arm'a spacing frame mounted within the main frame and. including spaced. side members and cross barsrextending between the side members. and having slidable connection there with, advertising matter beneaththe spacing frame, and a glasscovering'said spacing frame. e I y 'Intestimonywhereof I affix myssignature.
