This invention relates to improvements in visible record indexes, and is more particularly concerned with the provision of an index adapted to hold a plurality of swingable, detachably connected panels, the panels being preferably formed of thin cardboard and adapted to bear printed or written matter.
The present invention contemplates the provision of a visible record index in which the several panels are pivotally connected .to hinge wires by means of hinge clips, the hinge clips being preferably formed and arranged on their respective panels to permit the mounting of several panels upon each hinge wire.
This invention further contemplates the provision of a pair of supporting plates and a pair of locking plates, said plates being disposed in spaced parallel relation and formed along their upper edges with slots to receive and engage the ends of the hinge wires.
This invention further contemplates the provision of an index in which the supporting and clamping plate slots are formed and arranged to permit insertion or withdrawal of each hinge wire by merely bending the latter at its ends, the wire being formed of resilient metal to assume its normal straight form after being bent at its ends.
This invention further contemplates the provision of an index having a base formed fromsheet metal to. provide side walls and a back wall, the rear edges of the side walls being turned inwardly in spaced relation to the back wall to receive a mounting bracket.
This invention embodies other novel features, details of construction and arrangement of parts which are hereinafter set forth in the specification and claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. l is a top planview showing a visible record index embodying features of this invention, the hinge wire and panels pivotally connected thereto being omitted.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken along the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken along the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary plan view illustrating the manner in which the hinge wires are bent for insertion or removal from the recesses provided in the supporting and locking plates.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary sectional view taken along the line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view illustrating the 1 Claim. (Cl. 40-102) 2 manner in which a plurality of panels are pivotal- ]y mounted upon a single hinge wire.
Fig. 7 is a detail sectional view taken along the line 1-4 of Fig. 6.
Referring now to the drawings for a better understanding of this invention, the visible record index is shown as comprising a base 8 which is preferably formed from sheet metal and provided with side walls 9-9 and a back wall I l. The side walls 9-9 extend rearwardly, beyond the back wall II, and then project inwardly at '|2--|2 in spaced parallel relation to the back wall. A pair of angle plates |3|3 are secured in spaced relation to a desk or table l4 by means of screws l6, one leg of each angle plate being disposed in a vertical plane for engagement between the back wall H and the inturned ears |2 provided on the base 8.
A pair of angle-shape supporting plates |l-| 1, preferably formed from sheet metal, are spotwelded or otherwise secured in spaced parallel relation upon the base 8. The vertically disposed legs |8|8 of the supporting members I! are formed with U-shaped recesses l9 along their upper edges to snugly receive hinge wires 2|. A pair of angle-shape locking plates 22, preferably formed from sheet metal, are spot-welded or otherwise secured to the base 8. Each locking plate is disposed in spaced parallel relation between a side wall 9 and the adjacent supporting plate ll, the upper edge of each locking plate being formed with a plurality of L-shaped recesses 23 to snugly receive and engage the ends of the hinge wires 2|.
By referring to Figs. 2, 4 and 5 in the drawings, it will be noted that the inner ends of the U-shaped recesses I9 and L-shaped recesses 23 are in transverse alignment to receive and engage a straight hinge wire 2|. To position a hinge wire 2| in a set of recesses I9 and 23, it will be noted that the hinge wire 2| is first inserted in the U-shaped recesses I9 and the ends 2|a are bent laterally, as illustrated in Fig. 4, for movement downwardly and then laterally in the L-shaped recesses 23. After a hinge wire 2| is mounted within the recesses l9 and 23, it will be noted that the wire is held against outward dis placement by means of the abutment shoulders 24. The hinge wires 2| may be removed from their positions within the recesses l9 and 23 by bending the ends thereof laterally and then upwardly and outwardly from their respective L-shaped recesses 23. The hinge wires 2| are held against axial displacement relative to the supporting and locking plates by means of the side walls 9-9 which extend upwardly above the recesses I9 and 23.
A plurality of panels A, B, C, D and E are pivotally connected to each hinge wire 2| by means of metal clips 26 which are bent intermediate their ends to form a loop portion 21 and a pair of leg portions 28 and. 29, the leg portion 29 being bent inwardly at 3| to extend through the thickness of the panel. Each panel is provided with a pair of clips 26 for pivotal engagement with a hinge wire 2|. By arranging the clips at various positions along the upper edges of each of the panels, as illustrated in Fig. 6., it will be noted that five or more panels may be. pivotally connected to each hinge wire.
A cover 32 is hinged at 33 to a hinge plate 34 secured to the back wall I I. The cover 32 is preferably formed of sheet metal and bent inwardly along its side edges at 36 to provide a pair of opposing recesses adapted to receive and engage 1 In a visible record index, a base, a pair of immovable supporting plates arranged in spaced parallel relation and projecting upwardly from said base, a pair of immovable locking plates disposed in spaced parallel relation along the remote sides of said supporting plates and projecting upwardly from said base, said supporting plates being formed along their upper edges with U- s'haped recesses, said locking plates being formed along their upper edges with L-shaped recesses, the inner ends of said U-shaped recesses being in registry with the inner ends of said L-shaped recesses, and a straight resilient hinge wire mounted in the recesses provided in the upper edges of said supporting and locking plates and held against displacement by the walls defining said recesses, said locking plates being spaced apart from said supporting plates a sufiicient distance to permit flexing of the resilient hinge wire during mounting or removal of the latter.
