citizen of the- United States, residing 1n the town. of- Syracuse, Kosciusko County; Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cost-Computing Machines, of which the following is a specifi- I cation.
of liquid fuel for motor cars when dispensed at a filling station.
Othcrobjects of my invention are men tioned and described herein.
The preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevational'view of a calculating machine containing the invention; Fig. 2 is a view in'elevation of the rotatable chart cylinder and hand wheel; Fig. 3 is a view in elevation at right angles to the view shown in Fig. 1 and partiallyin section; Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is-asection taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
Reference to-the details of the drawings indicates that the invention consists essentially of a cylinder casing 1 to carry and encompass the chart cylinder 2, the latter being manually rotatable by means positioned exteriorly of the casing, as hereinafter described. The casing 1 may be pro vided a bracket'B'Which supports a second strap bracket 4 mounted upon the stud 5 which has the thumb nut 6 threaded thereon for clamping. the element 4 in rigid relation to the bracket 3. The bracket element 4 is provided'with screw or bolt apertures 7 to receive fastener'elements 8 for securing the device to a post, or the like, at a motor car filling station.
. The chart cylinder 2 may be made of sheet metal and provided with suitable heads 9, one only being shown in Fig. 5in which heads the shaft 10 is rigidly mounted, the upper end 11 thereof being journaled in the casing head 12, and the lower end of 1923. Serial N0.- 644;051.'
said shaft being iournaled in the detachable casing head 13. Axial movement of the shaft 10 may be prevented by a collar 14 adjustably secured thereon by a suitable setv screw 15, and the casing head'18 may be adjustably secured in position by a set screw 16. A handwheel 17, suitably secured to the lower end of the shaft 10 exteriorly of the casing 1 enables manual rotation of the shaft 10, and thereby the cylinder 2.
The numeral 18 indicates a ratchet wheel which may be rigid with the collar 14 and mounted within the casing cap 13, the teeth of said ratchet being adapted to be engaged by the point of aspring pawl or dog 19 riveted or otherwisesecured to the interior of the cap 13 at 20. v
The casing 1 is provided with a longitudinally arranged window casing 21 exteriorly thereof the front of which may consist of aglass window 22 suitably mount-ed therein. The casings 1 and 21 may be formed of suitable sheet metal, and within the'latter and disposed longitudinally of the former and laterallyof the center line of the casing 21, a window opening, or slot, 23 is formed in the wall of the casing 1 and through which the chart on cylinder 2 may be observed and read through window 22, as hereinafter described. Adjacent the window 23 and at the left side thereof, as my device is designed, and within the casing 21, the wall of the casing 1 at 24 is provided with a vertical'row of figures from fifteen to thirty inclusive representing the selling price per gallon of gasolene, or other liquid fuel for motor cars, same being \isiblc'through the window 22.
Adjacent the top end of the casing 21 a plate may be secured transversely thereof to form a relatively small window 26 in registration only with the extreme upper end of the window 23. The cylinder 2 is provided with a circumferential row of figures 27 adjacent the top end thereof representing the number of gallons of liquid fuel sold and a-da )ted to be brought into.

The chart on the cylinder 2 1ncludes also a scale of figures representing the gross selling price of a given number of gallons of fuel and which comprises a plurality of vertical rows of figures 28 arranged longitudinally of the cylinder, there being a row beneath each figure of the circumferential row 27, and disposed in parallel relation entirely around said cylinder, each of said rows being adapted to be separately brought into view through the window 23 by rotation of the cylinder 2.
The number of figures in each of the rows 28 accords with the number of figures in row 24 and the figure visible through window seat the right hand of any of the figures in row 24 represents the selling price of the nui'nber of gallons of fuel indicated through window 26. To avoid con 'l'usion to the operator in reading and interpreting the figures in rows 24: and 28 a vertically movable slide 20 is provided and mounted upon the rod 30 which is suitably secured to the casing brackets 31 and 32. The slide 29 may have a handle 39 and is j'n'oy-ided also with a pair of apertured hinge lu 's 37 and. 38, the apertures whereof are engaged by the rod 30 to retain said slide thereon. Adjustability of the slide 29 is etlected by the interposition of a bent spring clamp 33 between the rod 30 and said slide, said clamp being readily COmpressible manually to enable movement of the slide on the rod 30, and when released said clamp locks the slide in adjustment in any. position on said rod.
The slide 29 is provided with an extension 3% whichprojects through the opening formed in the wall of the casing 21. said slide extension being provided with a window 36 adapted to enclose only one figure in each of the two rows 24 and 28. As shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the slide has been adjusted to indicate that the cost of five gallons of liquid fuel at twenty one cents per gallon is $1.05. v
Obviously, rotation of the cylinder 2 and adjustment of the slide 29 will conspicuously indicate the gross cost of any munber of gallons oi liquid fuel registerable on the scale 27 and within the price limits fixed by the scale 24:.
After the proper circumterential adjustment of the casing head 13 by set screw 16 to effect registration of the rows 28 with the Window 523, rotation of the cylinder 2 by the handwheel 17 causes the ratchet pawl 19 to engage in the teeth of the ratchet 19. thereby stopping each row oi": Figures 25% in the center oi the window 23 as it arrives in registration therewith I claim In a calculating device in which there is an inside cylinder having inunerals on its circun'iference representing the unit: price and multiples thereof, and another cylinder having a slot therein and surrouiuling the first cylinder with a bracket attached to the outside of the outside cylinder, and
means on the bracket to hold the casing vertically or inclined, said outside casing having on its exterior other brackets, and a guide rod carried in said last mentioned brackets, a casing surrounding the slot: in the outside cylinder and having a slot. in its side, a pointer extending through. said slot and carried by said rod. and a friction spring carried by the pointer with its back resting against the rod and arranged to press the pointer against one side of the slot in the casing whereby as the cylinder is held vertically or inclined on the first mentioned bracket, the pointer will be held frictionally at any position to which it is moved.
