TWO-PART CO'LLAPSIBLE DESPLAY B021.
Application filed January 17, 1922.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ROTHCHILD F. THORN- DlKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Two-Part Collapsible Display Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to two-part col.-
lapsible display boxes, the object of the invention being to provide a box formed in two parts out of sheet material, such as cardboard, so that one of said parts may be slid upon the other and folded to form a 16 support therefor, whereby the body portion of the box may be positioned at an angle for purposes of display, the body portion of the box being held at said angle when so desired by means of the top of the box which has an extension on it extending beneath the bottom of the body portion slidable relatively thereto and connected to the top of the box by flexible joints extending thereacross.
The object of the invention is further to provide a display box of the character set forth in which the two parts are detachable from each other and adapted to be packed together in flat, compact form.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and particularly pointed out in the claims thereof. Further the invention consists of a blank constituting an article of manufacture comprising the top of a collapsible box.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a blank from which the top of the box is constructed by folding the same as hereinafter set forth.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of a blank from which the body portion of the box may be constructed by folding as hereinafter set forth.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the blank illustrated in. Fig. 1, the same being partly folded to form the top of the box.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the blank shown in Fig. 2, the same being partly folded to form the body portion of the box.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view illustrating the top of the box with its extension slidably positioned beneath the bottom of the body portion, said top being shown in full lines in one position and in dotted lines in Serial No. 529,336.
another position relatively to the body portion of the box.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the box with the top folded beneath the body portion and positioning said body portion at an angle for purposes of display.
Fig. 7 is a longitudinal, vertical, sectional elevation taken through the center of the box when the parts of the same are in the relative positions illustrated in Fig. 6.
Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the box closed.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
In the drawings, 10 is the blank from which the top of the box is formed, the same consisting of a flat top portion 11, an extension 12, an end portion 13, oppositely disposed wedge-shaped side portions 1% and 15 and oppositely disposed flaps 16 and 17. The flaps 16 and 17 are provided with recesses 16 and 17 in their outer edges. The blank is scored transversely thereof at 18, 19, 20, 21, 22 and 23 and longitudinally thereof at 24 and 25, and is slitted longitudinally thereof at 2% and 25. In folding the blank 10 to form the top of the box the flaps 16 and 17 are folded upwardly along the scored lines 21 and 22 and then the wedge-shaped portions, together with said flaps are folded to assume a substantially right angle position with relation to the flat top portion 11 as illustrated in Fig 3. The end portion 13 is then folded along the line 20 to bring the portion between the lines 20 and 23 of said end portion against the flap 16. Then the end portion is folded along the line 23 and the tongue 26 is inserted through the recess 17 between the flaps 16 and 17, thus forming one end of the top portion of the box.
The blank 27 consists of a bottom portion 28, side portions 29 and 30, end portions 31 and 32 and side flaps 33, 34, 35 and 36. The side flaps 33 and 341 are provided with recesses 50 and 51. Said blank is scored transversely thereof along lines 37, 38, 39 and 40, and is scored longitudinally thereof along lines l1 and 42 and slitted longitudinally thereof along lines41' and 42. The bottom portion 28 is slitted transversely thereof along lines 43 and 44 and the end portion 32 is provided with a tongue 45.. The blank is provided on the outer edge of the flap 35 with a notch 16, and on the inner edge of the flap 36 With a notch 47.
The blank 2'? is folded to form a box portion primarily as illustrated in Fig. at by folding the flap" along the scored line 33' and the flap 34: along the scored line 34 to a position substantially at right angles to the side portions 29 and 30. The flaps 35 and 36 are folded to a position substantially at right angles to the side portions 29 and 30 along the scored lines 35 and 36 respectively. The side portions 29 and 30 are then folded inwardly towardeaeh other along the scored lines ll and 42respectively. This brings the flaps 33 and 34; into the position illustrated in Fig. h The end portion 32 is then folded along the scored line 39 as illustrated in big. 4 and said end portion is then folded along the line 40 and the tongue 45 is inserted through the recess 51 and between the flaps 33 and 34, thus forn'iing one end of the body portion of the box. The other end of the body portion of the box is formed by folding the flaps 35 and 36 with the flap 35 extending into the notch 47 and the flap" 36 extending into the notch 46. The end portion 31 is folded on the line 38 inside the flaps and 36, thus completing the otherend of the body portion of the box, and the outer end partof said end portion 31 is then folded along the line 37 to form a display means for an advertisement when the box is in the position illustrated in Fig. 6, or the same is folded downwardly into a substantiallyhorizontal position beneath the cover when the box is entirely closed as il lustrated in Fig. 8.
When the top and bottom portions have been folded as hereinbefore described they are connected together by slipping the extension 12 through the slits and 44, thus connecting the extension 12 to'the bottom of the body portion of the box illustrated in full lines, Fig.5.
Assuming the parts to be connected together as illustrated in full lines in Fig. 5 and it is desired to position the parts relatively to each other to form a display box, the top is pushed forwardly in the position illustrated in dotted lines, Fig. 5, and then folded backwardly underneath the body por tion along the line 19, thus bringing the parts into the relative positions illustrated in Figs. 6 and 7.
Assuming the parts to be in the position illustrated in full lines in Fig. 5 and it is desired to close the box, the top is folded ever the box with the portion between the lines 18 and 19 contacting with the end of the body portion which is formed by the flaps 33 and 34 and the end portion 32 and with the wedge-shaped portions 14; and 15 contacting with the side portions and 30 of the body portion of the box, all as illustrated in Fig. 8, and wh'enin this position will be understood that the parts are locked together by a tongue 48 which is'formed in the extension 12 and is connected thereto along the scored line 49, see 1. When the parts are in the relative positions illustrated in Fig. 5 full lines and in Fig. 3 this tongue portion will engage the portion of the bottom of the box between the slits 43 and 4-4, particularly along the line 13 and will thus prevent the extension 12 from being moved beyond a predetern'iined distanee relatively to the bottom of the box in a directionto separate it therefrom.
I claim:
