IMPROVEMENT IN WHIP-SOCKETS.
Specification forming part of Leit` rs Patent No.715l,798, dated June 9, 1874; application filed March 14, 1874.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WVILLIAM WARREN RICHARDSON, of Westfield, Hampden county, State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Whip-Sockets, of which the following is a specification:
The objects and nature of my invention are fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure I is an outside view of my socket; Fig. II, a vertical section, showing the socket holding a Whip; and Fig. III is an end view.
B is the barrel `of the socket, which I form of sheet metal, and so as to taper from its mouth to its apex d, which I leave open to permit the escape of water, and, being formed of sheet metal, I am able to construct it ofa single sheet, having the overlapping edges properly secured. By means of extending the taper to form a cone or pyramidal holder of unusual length, I am enabled to dispense with the necessity of lit-tin g a bottom to the socket, as the smallest whip-handle will find a bearin g before reaching the bottom of the socket, while of necessity a larger whip-handle will bear at a point nearer its mouth.
In order to secure the whip from being girdled by the mouth of the socket, or from jolting out of it, I provide the mouth with springs, as shown in the drawing, which bear against the whip-handle to hold it.
