Description

UNITED STATES PATENT @Errore THOMAS RAWSON, OF VILLIAMSBUR i, NEWT YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN DRUMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l5 1,797, dated June 9, 1574; :ipl'llicetnn filed May 16, 1874.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS RAWSON, of Williamsburg, Kings county, New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Drums, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a side view of a drum to which my improvement has been applied, part being' broken away to show the construction; and Fig. 2 is a detail view of the key for straining` the drum.
My invention has forits object to furnish an improved device for straining drums which shall do away with the cords and leather ears which are now used for this purpose, and which shall be simple in construction, convenient in use, and reliable in operation. The invention. consists in the hook, the swiveled screw, and the bracket, constructed as hereinafter described, to adapt them to be applied to a drum, as set forth.
A represents the shell of a drum; B, the lining; O, the hoop; D, the head; and E, the headband, about the construction of which parts there is nothing` new. F is a double or two-pronged hook, which hooks over the edge of the hoop C, and in the shank ot' which is formed a hole to receive the screw G, which is swiveled to said hook, and its end is squared ofi' to receive a key for turning it. The screw G passes through a screw-hole in the body of the bracket H, the outer part of which projects upward at right angles to extend along and rest against the screw G. The inner end oi' the bracket H passes in through the shell A, and is slightly bent to take hold ot' the edge of' the lining` B, so as to be firmly supported.
By this construction, by turning' the screw G in one or the other direction, the drinn may be strained to any desired extent, orslackened, as may be desired.
The device F G Il may be applied to all kinds of drums, and will hold them iirinly under any desired tension.
Having` thus described my inventicn, 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The hook F, the swivcled screw G, and the bracket lLconstructed and combined substantially as herein shown and described, to adapt them to be applied to a drinn, as and for the purposes set forth.
THOMAS RAVSON. lVitn esscs:
