SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 233,647, dated October 26, 1880.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY EMIL WAEHLTE, of San Jos, in the county Santa Clara and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Stirrups; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

Figure I is a perspective view ot' my improved sai'ety-strrup. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the foot-plate detached from the bail, and Fig. 3 is a detail view of the bail.

Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted hy like letters of reference.

This invention relates to safety-stirrups; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents the bail, which is provided at its upper end with a slot, B, for the reception of the stirrup-strap. One of the arms O of the bail isjointed near itslower end, the hinged piece D being capable of swinging in an outward direction, as shown. The operation of my invention will be readily understood. In the event ot' thehorseinan bein g thrown the Swingin g around will detach one end of the foot-plate from the stirrup-bail, and the other end, being attached to the hinged piece D, will cause the foot-plateto swing free and thus release the foot. Afterward the stirrup may be readily restored to its original condition.
