new and useful Improvements in Picker-Staffs for Looms; and I dodeclare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such aswill enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. I
My invention relates to improvements in picker staffs forlooms and more particularly to means for elfecting a connection between the picker staff and the connecting bar or stick for transmitting motion to said staff; and it has for its general object to provide a simple and durable device through the medium of which the tug of the connecting bar or stick may be adjustably fixed at various points on the picker stafi: so as to regulate the throw of said staff and that of the shuttle without the objectionable necessity of perforating the staff or otherwise weakening the.

Other objects and advantages will be fully understood from the following description and claims when taken in connection with the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1, is a perspective view of so much of the mechanism of a loom as is necessary to illustrate my invention. Fig. 2, is a detail view of the picker stafi with my improved device in position thereon; a portion of said device together with the tug of the connecting bar being illustrated in section, and Fig. 3, is an enlarged detail section taken in the plane indicated by the line as, w, of Fig. 2.
Referring by letter to said drawings: A, indicates the lay of a loom; B, indicates the picker staff; 0, indicates the arm of the rocker shaft (not illustrated); D, indicates the connectin g bar or stick, and E, indicates the staffreceiving tug carried by the bar or stick D, all of which may be of the ordinary or any approved construction.
The rocker-shaft arm 0, and the picker staff B, are connected as better shown in Fig. 2, by a bolt F, and this bolt also serves to effect a connection between the picker stalf and my improved adjusting device G, the body portion a, of which is mounted on the bolt between the arm G,and the picker staias shown.
The body portion a, of the device G, is preferably formed from malleable iron or other suitable metal and it is provided with an apertured post 0, and a guide lug d, to receive the shank e, of the adjustable section H, and isalso provided at intervals with transverse sockets f, to receive the angular stud g, of the said shank.
As better shown in Fig. 1 the loop or eye I, of the section H, receives the tug E, of the bar or stick D, and it is provided at its ends with the transversely disposed curved portions h, which present a convex surface to the loop E, and thereby prevent unnecessary frictional wear of the same. The shank e, of the adjustable section extends as before stated, through the apertures of the log (1, and post 0, and-its studg, is designed to be fixed in anyone of the apertures f, by the binding screw 1', which takes through the post 0, and engages the shank as shown. By this construction it will be seen that the loop or eye I, may be readily and positively fixed at Various distances from the free end of the picker stafi to increase or diminish the throw of the said staff, without the objectionable necessity of perforating or otherwise weakening the same. It will also be seen that my improved device has no direct connection with the picker staff and consequently when said staff is worn or broken, it may be readily removed and a new stafi employed in conjunction with the adjusting device.
From the foregoing description and the drawings, it will be noted that my improved device is very simple, durable and easily operated, and it will also be noted that it may be applied to looms such as at present in use without changing any of the parts of the same and without the employment of skilled labor which is a desideratum. It will also be noted that the adjusting device braces and prolongs the usefulness of the picker staff since it re* oeives a portion of the strain placed thereon.
Having described my invention, what I claim is 1. The combination with a picker stafi, and
a connecting bar or stick carrying atugto receive the 'picker'staft'; of an adjusting device comprising a body portion having a series of sockets at intervals in its length, an adjustable section adapted to engage the tug of the connecting bar or stickaind havinganangusockets'at inter-vals inits length and also having an -apertureil :lug and-an "apertured post and a'binding'screw mounted in said post,
and an adjustable -sectionadapted to engage the tug of the connecting bar orstick and havin g-an angular stud adapted to engage the sockets-of "the body portion, substantially as specified.
3. The combination with apicker stafi, 1 its pivot, and a connecting bar or stick carrying a*tug-toreceivethe pickerst-aff; of the adj usting device comprising thebody portion or plate mounted on the. pivot of the picker stafi and having sockets at intervals in its length andalso having a guide lug and a post carrying a binding screw, and an adjustable section having a loop or eye adapted to receive the tug of the connecting bar or stick, and a shank having an angular stud to engage the sockets-of the body portion, substantially as specified.
4. As an improved article of manufacture,
a the adjusting-device herein described, comprising the body portion having a series of sockets at intervals in its length, and also having the guide lug d, and the post 0, carrying a bindingscrew, and the adjustable section having a loop or: eye anda-shankadapted to take through the guidelug and post of the body portion and provided with an angular stud adaptedto engage the-sockets ofsaid body portion, substantially as-specified.
