PICKER-CHECK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented aan. 2,1912.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known vthat I, CHARLES N. TUCKER,
-a citizen of the United States, residing at Pawtucket, in the 'county of Providence and State of Rhode slatd, have invented certain VImprovements in Picker- Checlis, of which the following is a specification, reference being panying drawings.
This invention relates to improvementsin picker checks for looms, for checking the motion of the picker staff at the extremities vvthe object of the invention being to .provide a simple and eiicient decharacter, which ma be ad vary the extent of its check,-
4being to enable the heel strap to-be materif lower end ofthe Ais ally shortened so as to etlect an economy in the construction of the picker check and in the cost of maintaining the loom, another object being to providean improved device which prevents the heel strap from slipping 4from and becoming disconnected from the picker statt.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved device .to prevent the picker stad from jumping up and becoming unseated from the shoe if the heel strap should break.
With the above `and other objects in view, my invention consists in the construction,
combination and arran ement of devices hereinafter described an claimed. Y In the accompanying drawings*Figure 1 an elevation of a picker staff provided with my improved check and showing the same in connection with the coacting parts o`fa loom. Figa 2 is a vertical sectional View on the plane indicated by the line aa of Fig. 1f F 3 is a horizontal sectional view on the plane indicated by the line b'-b of Fi 1. Fig. 4 is a similar View on theplane indicated by the line @-0 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5
' is' a detail transverse sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line d-d of Fig". 1.
I The picker stati' 1, swings upon the step 2, and o crates in the lay 3. The rocking foot of t e stati has a vertical slot 5, which receives a lug 6 that projects from the upper side ot the step. An ear 7 depends from one side of the step and is provided with a horizontally disposed spindle 8 which extends had to the accomtransversely nnder the step and on which is mounted the roller 9 which is turned inone direction by a=spring 10, All of these parts are of theusual construction.
One end of the heel strap 11 is attached to the roller 9. In accordance with my invention, the opposite end instead of being attached directly tothe lower end of the picker stati' as has heretofore lusually been done, is attached as by means of av suitable lbelt hook to a transof the heel strap verse hook 12 at the lower end of a hook rod 13. The hook 12 extends under the step. The upper end of the rod has a laterally extending portion 14 which has a. U-shaped upwardly extending arm 15 which bears against the inner side of the picker statt and is secured thereto by means of a bolt 16 and a clip shaped washer 17, the said bolt extending throu hthe washer, opel ating in the slot forme by the arm 15 and being engaged by a nutv 18 which bears on the outer side of the washer and coacts with the washer to clamp the arm 15 between the washer and the picker stati and to enable the saidfarm to be adjusted vertically so as to correspondingly adjust the said hook rod 13. The major portion of the hook rod eX- tends downwardly on one side ofthe picker staff, and also on one side of the foot 2, and the step.
A clip 19 is secured on the outer side of the picker staff, the bolt and also the upwardly extending portion of the foot. A washer 21 on the said bolt is interposed between the picker staff and the clip. The clip has an outwardly extending arm or wing 22, which extends behind the hook rod 13. The picker stati is slidable to some extent in the usual opening 23, in t-he step 2. By first loosening the nut 18, on the bolt 1G, the rod 13 may be raised or loweredA on the picker staff so as to vary the tension on the spring 10 as may be required according to the desired check on the picker staff. To increase the check, the rod 13 is raised. To take oit or loosen the check, the said rod is lowered. Having adjusted the rod 13 as required, the nut 18 is then tightened on the bolt 16, so as to cause the washer 17 to firmly grip Athe slotted arm 15 of the rod, and secure the'said arm, and hence the rod in the required adjusted position on the picker staff.;
Since the rod 13 to which the heel strap is' connected is disposed on the inner side of the picker staff, the heel strap is very much shorter than hasheretofore been required, and enables a considerable economy to be effected. Moreover, should. the heel strap break, another can be readily substituted in its stead, and connected to the hook arm of the rod 13, and without the necessity of removing any bolt or other like devices, and Without the necessity of detaching the picker stad from the rocking foot, as theheel strap in accordance with my invention, instead of being connected tothe outside of the picker stai by the bolt 20, is connected to the hook arm 12 of the rod 13. Furthermore, by connecting the heel strap to the hook arm 12, the heel strap is e'ectually prevented from slipping from the picker staff, the clip 19 with its wing 22 forms a guide for the hook rod 13, is not subject to wear, and'will last indefinitely. Moreover my improved devices` cause the picker staff to throw the shuttle straighter than heretofore, prevent the picker staff from getting out of position and from getting out of order. i'
I claimt -v r1. In mechanism of the class described,
v the combination of a step, a picker stai? mounted thereon, a spring actuated roller, and a rod attached to the sta', 'and having an arm extending Itransversely under the step, and a heel strap attached to the roller and also attached to said arm.
2. A picker staii having an adjustable rod on one side thereof, and provided with an arm to extend transversely under the step, and serve for the attachment of a heel strap.
3. A picker staff having an adjustable rod on one side thereof, and provided with an arm to extend transversely under the step, and serve for the attachment of a heel strap, said arm of the rod forming a hook to prevent the picker stad from becoming unseated on the step in the event of the breaking of the heel strap.
4'. A picker stai having a hook rod provided at its lower end with an arm to 'extend transversely under a step, and provided at its upper end with an off-set vertically slotted arm to bear against one side of the staff, in combinationwith a bolt extending through the stati and the slot of said arm, a clip on said bolt and bearings against said arm, and a nut on the bolt and -bearing against the outer side of the clip.
A5. A picker staff havin a hook rod provided at its lower end w1th an arm to extend transversely under a step, and provided at its upper end with an oE-set vertically slotted arm to bear against one side of the stati', in combination with "a bolt extending through the staff and the slot ot said arm, a 'clip on said bolt and bearing against said arm, and a nut on the bolt bear'- ingagainst the outer side of the clip, the stai being further provided wlth a gu1de clip attached thereto and provided with an outstanding wing disposed at one s1de of the said rod.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aiiix my signature in the presence of two wltnesses.
