Description

W. F. CLAYTON.
PICKER STICK CHECK FOR LOOMS.
APPLICATlON FILED'JUNE 25, I922.
Patented June 27,1922.
UNHTED STATES WILLIAM F. CLAYTON, OF'HUN'TSVILLE, ALABAMA.
IPICKER-STICK GI-IEGK FOR LOOMSQ To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, I/VILLIAM F. CLAYTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Huntsville, in the county of Madison and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Picker- Stick Checks for Looms; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in picker-stick checks for looms, and more particularly to that class of looms in which the shuttle checking is accomplished by the action of the check on the picker-stick. The main object of this invention is the provision of a check of the above character which can be quickly and readily adjusted so as to be disposed in its proper relative position whereby to receive the blow of the picker-stick.
Another object of the present invention is the provision of a device adapted to be used for retaining the picker-stick in true alignment with the lay so as to enable the pick motion of the loom to throw the shuttle in a direct line from one shuttle box to the other, and at the same time retain the shuttle in its correct position in the shuttle box of the hopper end.
lVith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a checking device constructed in accordance with my invention illustrating the application of the same to the lay of a loom, and
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional View taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
In the accompanying drawings my improved checking device is attached to the lay of the loom which is generally indicated by the numeral 1. The main supporting element includes a U-shaped frame 2 having one of its arms projecting somewhat beyond the other arm as at 3 and disposed at one side of the picker-stick 4. The frame 2 is suspended beneath the lay 1 by means of the bracket 5 connected to the extended arm 3 and having an arm 6 connected at one end to the bracket 5 by means of the bolt 7 the other end of the arm 6 being riveted or otherwise secured to the lay l.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 27, 1922'.
Application filed January 25, 1922,
Serial No. 531,696.
The picker=stick 4 is retained in its proper relative position so as to receive the blow of the shuttle and throw the shuttle in a direct line from one shuttle box to the other, by means of the spring arms 8, the inner ends of which are connected by means of the bolts 9 to the side portions of the frame 2 preferably upon the inner sides of the frame and extend outwardly beneath the lay 1, the outer ends of these spring arms being curved inwardly toward each other whereby to pro= vide a frictional grip for the opposed faces of the picker-stick. These opposed faces of the spring arms 8 are provided with pads 10, which may be of leather or any other suitable material of a like character whereby when the picker-stick is moved therebetween they will tend to assist in retarding the movement of the picker-stick.
My improved check includes an arm 11 suspended from the extended end 3 of the frame and mounted for adjustment upon the bolt 12. This arm 11 may be adjusted upon the bolt 12 and retained in various adjusted positions by means of the nut 13 threaded upon said bolt. Connected to the lower end of this arm 11 by means of the bolt 14 is an angular plate 15 and mounted upon the end of this plate which extends at right angles to the arm 11 is a supporting staff 16, the lower end of which is mounted for adjustment upon the end of the plate 15 by means of the bolt and nut 17 Upon the upper end of this staif 16 is a buffer including an arcuate shaped plate 18 having a suitable pad 19 attached to its inner face which may be formed of felt or any other suitable material whereby to receive the impact of the picker-stick 4 upon its outward movement or as it moves to a position to receive and throw the shuttle to the opposite shuttle box.
In order to adjust the tension of the spring arms 8, set screws 20 are carried by the side portions of the frame 2 and adapted to extend therethrough for engagement with the arms 8 as illustrated in Fig. 2, whereby the arms 8 may be readily adjusted to retain the picker-stick 4 in its proper relative position.
In order to receive the blow of the pickerstick 4 at the right time, the bufi'er may be readily adjusted to the proper relative position through the adjustment of the staff 16, plate 15 and arm 11. The staff 16 is mounted for adjustment upon the bolt 17 whereby the buffer may be adjusted angularly and the plate 15 is mounted for adjustment upon the bolt 14 sothat the staff may be adjusted ver- 1 buffer member mounted for vertical and angular adjustment upon said frame and disposed in the path of the picker-stick.
2. A device of the class described including a frame, means for supporting said frame beneath the lay of a loom, a pivotally mounted arm suspended from said frame and a buifer member mounted for vertical and angular adjustment upon the lower end of said arm and disposed in the path of the picker-stick.
8. Adevice of the class described includ-' ing a frame, means for supporting said frame beneath the lay of a loom yieldable guide arms arranged in opposed relation and supported by said frame between which the picker-stick of the loom moves and a buffer member mounted for vertical and frame beneath the lay of a loom, opposed spring guide arms carried by said frame between which the picker-stick of the loom moves, means for adjusting said arms angularly and a buffer member supported beneath said arms for vertical and angular adjustment and disposed inthe pathway of the picker-stick.
5. A check for picker-sticks for looms including a frame supported beneath the lay of'the loom, a buffer member, and means supporting saidmember including a pivotin a planeparallel to the plane of the movement of the picker-stick.
6. A check for picker-sticks for looms in.- cluding aframe supported beneath the lay of the loom, a buffer member, means supporting said member including a pivot in a of the picker-stick, and another pivot in a w. F. CLAYTON.
