METHOD FOR MAKING BOXES.

To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, JOHN J. TYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greensboro, in the county of Guilford and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Methods for Making Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
' This invention relates to methods for makirgg boxes and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved method wherein two complete boxes are produced requiring but two gluing operations and asingle cutting operation.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to de Scribe the same with reference to the accom panying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the core applied in connection with my method as herein disclosed for making boxes;
Figure 2 is a View in perspective with portions broken away showing the first blank and adhesive strip applied.
Figure 3 is a View similar to Figure 2 showing the second blank and second adhesive strip applied;
Figure 4 is a view in perspective illustrating the severing step as comprised in my method as herein set forth;

Figure 7 is a cross sectional view taken through the asembly as illustrated in Figure 4 showing the applied blanks severed and ready for removal.
In my method as herein disclosed I employ acore C of requisite dimensions and which may be made of any desired material and which is provided therethrough with the openings 1 in which the digits of a hand are adapted to be inserted to facilitate the handling of the core. A blank B of card board or other desired material is cut to proper size and configuration and is fitted snugly about the core C, said blank being bended or flexed on the lines a so that when the blank B is applied to the core C, said blank completely encloses the core.

core the strip 2 of box trimming paper or the binding paper part is applied aroundthe side walls afforded by the blank B. This strip 2 has adhesive on a face thereof whereby the strip may be effectively and conveniently applied.
After the blank B has been formed upon the core C a second blank B of cardboard or the like and also cut to proper size and configuration is formed about the core C and the applied blank B, said blank B- being folded on the linesc. After the blank B has been formed upon the core C and the blank B, the strip 3 of box trimming paper or a second binding paper part is applied around the side walls formed by the blank B said strip 3 also having an adhesive on a face thereof to facilitate its application.
After the blank B has been properly formed or applied an incision is made through the side walls of both of the applied blanks in a direction lengthwise thereof whereby the structures produced by the assembled blanks B and B are halves, the sections produced from the cut in one form constituting the inside or inner sections while the sections of the outer structure afforded by the blank B provide the outer box sections. In View of this it will be readily seen that two complete boxes of a telescoping type are produced by two gluing operations and a single cutting operation.
Holes 4 may be drilled or otherwise produced through opposed side walls of the structure afforded by the blank B so that when this structure is divided or separated by the incision both of the resulting top sections will be provided with thumb holes or recesses as are generally preferred.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that my improved method is particularly adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be employed and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim 2- 1. A method of making telescoping boxes consisting in forming a closed hollow member, applying an adhesive strip around the sides of the hollow member for maintaining parts thereof assembled, then forming a second hollow member upon the first named hollow member, then applying a second adhesive strip around the sides of the second hollow member for maintaining the parts thereof in assembled relation and then cutting through the side walls of both of the hollow members.
2. A method of making telescoping boxes consisting in forming two closed hollow members, one snugly fitting within the other and then cutting through the side walls of said members.
3. A method of making telescoping boxes consisting in forming two closed hollow members one snugly fitting within the other, forming an opening in a side wall of one of said members and then cutting through the side walls of said members on a line intersecting the opening.
4:. A method of making telescoping boxes consisting in forming two closed hollow members one snugly fitting within the other, forming openings in the opposed walls of the outer member and then cutting through the side walls of said members on a line intersecting the holes.
5. A method of making telescoping boxes consisting in forming a closed hollow member, applying means for holding the parts of the member assembled, forming a second hollow member upon the first named hollow member, applying means to hold the parts of the second hollow member assembled, and then cutting through the side walls of both of the hollow members.
6. A method of making telescoping boxes consisting in providing a core of requisite dimensions, forming a closed hollow member about the core, applying an adhesive strip for maintaining the parts of said hollow member assembled, then forming a second hollow member upon the first named hollow member, applying a second adhesive strip to hold the parts of the second hollow member assembled, and then cutting through the walls of both of the hollow members to divide each of said hollow members into two parts.
