IMPROVEMENT IN LAMP-COLLARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 151,636, dated June 2, 1874; application filed May 14. 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, THEODORE A. WEBER and FRANZ H. KANTRSZINSKY, both of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Securing Lamp-Collars; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which drawing Figure 1 is a sectional side view of our invention as applied to a lamp. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section thereof in the line as as, Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow marked opposite to that line. Fig. 3 is a vertical central section of the collar detached.

This invention relates to a mode of securing collars to lamps without the use of cement, so as to save time and labor and at the same time improve the finish of the article. Our invention consists in providing the collar with spurs or protuberances, which are adjusted in inclined grooves upon the neck of the lamp, in combination with a spring-catch, which is held by ratchets upon the said neck in such a manner as to lock the collar in position.
In the drawing, the letter A designates the body of a lamp. B is its neck, and O is the rin g or collar, which is provided with a threaded portion, D, for receiving the lamp burner. The body and neck of the lamp are of glass, being made in the usual manner in one and the same mold, and upon the neck B are two or more inclined grooves, a. These grooves are, preferably, formed at the time of molding the lamp, as just mentioned, and they are provided with an upright branch, I), for admitting the spurs of the collar to the inclined grooves, as hereinafter specified. Upon the neck B we form, also, a rack or ratchets, E, at the time of molding the lamp. The collar 0 is of sheet metal, and on the inside thereof are two or more spurs or protuberances, c, which are formed by dies or press-tools directly in the side of the collar, or they are made in the form of pins and soldered or riveted thereto, as desired by the maker. On the inside of the collar we affix, also, a spring-catch or detent, d, in any suitable manner, the same being so located that it engages the ratchets E when the collar is placed upon the neck, as shown in Fig. 2.
In proceeding to secure the collar upon the neck of the lamp, we adjust the spurs 0 into the branch grooves b, and at the same time compress the spring-catch d between the inside of the collar and the surface of the neck. The collar is then shoved downupon the neckuntil the spurs are brought in linewith theinclined grooves a, and the catch (1 is brought upon the rack or ratchets E, when the catch will expand and engage therewith. By now turning the collar in the direction of the inclined grooves the spurs 0 are caught under the edges .thereof and the collar is drawn down tight upon the neck, while the spring-catch moves over and is held by the ratchets E, so as to prevent a return movement of the collar. The collar is thus effectually locked in position. In the top of the collar is a gasket or packingring, 6, whereby an elastic and tight joint is effected with the edge of the neck of the lamp. By this arrangement we dispense with the use of cement in securing the collar, while we provide a more substantial and lasting joint without comparatively increasing the expense of manufacture of the article, if at all.
WVhat we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
