FREDERICK \V. BROWVN, OF CAMBRIDGEPORT, MASSACHUSETTS.
DRESS-FORM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 400,297, dated March 26, 1889.
Application filed November 12, 1888. Serial No. 290,569. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK W. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at 0ambridgeport, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dress-Forms; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a vertical section of a dress-form as made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of a portion of the skirtframe and standard. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of the form taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the collar C and its arms and also two of the arms D,
My invention consists in a new construction and arrangement of parts whereby the form can be adjusted to the different sizes required; and, furthermore, the different parts of the form are so connected that they can be readily detached from each other, so as to admit of being packed together into a space of about one-fourth of the size occupied by the form when set up for use, as hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, A denotes the standard, made in sections a b c, of tubing, the former of which screws into the foot B. The section I) slides within the section a, and its height is regulated by a movc ble collar, d, confined to said section by a set-screw, 6, said collar resting on the top of the section a in the usual manner. The section 0 enters the top of the section b, and fits thereto with a tight joint, it having a shoulder, f, to rest on the top of said section. Near to the top of the section b is fixed a collar, C, provided with slotted arms it, there being as many of said arms as there are sections to the form. Each arm h, at its outer end, has an upwardlyextending projection, 1', which is to enter either of the slots in an extension-arm, D, at the inner end of which is a downwardly-extending projecarm h beneath it at the same time that the projection '6 enters a slot in the said arm D, and when the latter arm rests on the arm h the two will be firmly connected to each other by means of the projections'and slots. From the outer end of each arm D there extends upward a projection, Z, which enters a socket, m, projecting from the inner surface of the waistband of each skirt-section E and sustains the said sections, as shown. To the edge-strip n of each skirt-section is secured a spring-catch, 0, which is composed of a single piece of spring-wire formed with an eye, which receives a rivet to connect it to the strip end with spring-arms, which, on being pressed together, will enter and securely hold thereto an eye, 19, forming part of a rod, (1, pivoted at its other end to cars forming part of a flanged collar, F, adjustable on the standard and secured to the standard by a setscrew. Pivoted to one of the strips n of each section E is a notched arm, 7', which operates with a headed stud, s, secured to the next adjacent strip a of the adjoining section to connect the said sections together, as shown. The projection Z from the arms D- also extends into and through sockets. t, secured to the interior and lower portion of each of the waistsections G, which rest on the upper edge of the waistband of the skirt-sections, as shown. The neck portions of each waist-section G also has a socket, it, which receives a downwardly-extending projection, o, from an extension-arm, H, provided with slots, and at its inner end with a projection, 10, also extending downward, but of less length than the projection 12. The said projection 10 of each of the arms H enters slots in the arms a: of the collar 1, fixed to the part c of the standard, and the outer ends of the said arms as have projections g, which enter the slots in the arms H, and connect them to the arms :1; of the collar I in the same way that the arms D are connected to the arms h of the collar 0. The said arms h and a: are each to have the sizes to which the form can be adjusted marked on them to facilitate the changing of the form from one size to another. To the upper portion of the standard is applied a knob, K, provided at its bottom with a flange, a, which bears on the arms II. Near the top of the standard is a stud, b, which projects beyond the periphery of the standard, and in the knob is a groove, 0, extending from the bottom of the flange up to a chamber, (1', in the upper part of the knob. \Vhen the waist and the neck of the form have been adjusted to the required size, the knob is applied to the standard and borne down on the arms II. to make them bear on the arms 4r. Then the knob is turned on its axis, so as to cause the stud I) to bear on the shoulder c, which will prevent the knob from rising, and the various parts of the form will then be securely held to the standard.
From the above it will be seen that the dressform hereinbefore described is provided with means of adjustment to increase or diminish its size, as may be required; and also, owing to the construction and manner of arranging and connecting the various parts, they can be readily disconnected and packed in a space of about quarter the size of that occupied by the form when set up ready for use, and will thus be in a much more convenient shape to transport than the dress-forms heretofore in use.
Having described my invention, what I elai m 1. In a dress-form, the combination of the standard made in sections detachable from each other and from the foot, as described, with the flanged collar 0, secured to one of said sections and provided with arms 71 slotted and having at their outer ends projections 1', and the skirt-sections provided with the slotted arms D, the projections i being to enter the slots in the arms I), and. the arms 1') having the projections Z: to enter the slots in the arms 72 all essentially as shown and set forth.
2. In a dress-form, the combination of the standard made in sections detached from each other and from the foot, as described, with the flanged collar 0, secured to one of said sections and provided with arms slotted and having the projections i, and the skirt-sections having the extension-arms D, also slotted and provided with the projections 75 and Z, the former, 7;, to enter the slot in the arms 71, and
the latter, 7, to enter sockets in the skirt-section and waist-sections of the form to support the same, all essentially as shown and set forth.
3. In a dress-form, the standard made in sect-ions detachable each from the other, the collar 0, fixed to one of the said sections and provided with arms 71, slotted as shown, and having the projections *1', in combination with the skirt-sections provided with the arms I), slotted and having the projections 70 and Z, the sockets on, and with the notched arms 1' and headed studs .sfor connecting the said sections to each other, all. suljistantially as shown and set forth.
4'. 'lheknob K, provided with the flange a, and having a passage through it to receive the upper end portion of the standard, also a groove, c, leading out of said passage, and a chamber, at, communicating with said passage and groove, in combination with the standard provided with the stud l), and having fixed to it the collar 1, with the slotted arms a; and projections y, the slotted arms 11', having the downward ]in'ojections van (1 7!, the former entering the sockets a in the form-sections and the latter the slots in the said arms 11:, the flange of said knob bearing on said arms 11', and the stud I! resti ngon the bottom of chamber d, all substantially as shown, and t'or the purpose deseriliied.
5. In a dress-form, the standard-made sections, detachable each from the other and. from the Foot, for the purpose described, the collar 0,1ixed to one of said sections and provided with arms slot-ted, as shown, and having projectimis 1', and the arms T), slotted, and having the projections in and I, in combination with the skirt-sections provided with sockets m and spring-catches o, the rods q, pivoted. to a collar on the standard and connected to the said spring-catches, and the said collar F,adjustable on the standard, all essentially as shown and set forth.
In testimony whereof I atlix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
