To all whom t may concern.:

Be it known that I, FLORA OWENS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brea, county of Orange, State of Califor-` nia, have invented new and useful improvements in Head Coverings, of which the following is a specification.

rlhis invention relates to head coverings, and has for its object to provide a bonnet structure which may be readily converted into a hat.

It is a further object of the invention to provide a head covering having a brim of fabric material, and which will be of the required stiffness without the necessity of starching the same.

lt is a still further object of the invention to provide a structure having convertible means for either shading the neck of the wearer or forming an ornament for the device.

The invention also contemplates the provison of a convertible hat and bonnet structure as set forth, having fastening strings fixed to the device at the inside of the same, so that said fastening means may be either tied Linder the chin, when using the head covering as a bonnet, or may be tucked inside of the crown of the structure and out of sight, when the device is worn as a hat.

Further objects of the invention will be readily understood from the following de scription of the accompanying drawings, in which,

.ln the drawings I have shown a crown structure l, of suitable fabric material, secured at its edge to a relatively wide annular brim 2 of fabric material, preferably with the edge of the crown gathered as shown at 3, at its junction with the brim, in order to provide a relatively full crown, and a device which will fit neatly over the head.

The brim is stiffened, so that starching of the same is not necessary. For this purpose a lining 4 is provided for the brim, said brim and lining being connected by annular rows of stitching 5. The lining is preferably of relatively heavy material,

Tabs 6 of suitable material, are secured at the rear of the head covering, preferably at the line of gathers 3, and fastening strings 7 are provided for the device, said strings being shown as fixed to the inside of the structure at the line of gathers. The device may be worn as a bonnet as shown in Figs. l and 2, in which case the brim extends forwardly from the crown, strings 71 extend outwardly so as to be tied beneath the chin, and tabs 6 are permitted to depend from the structure in order to form a sun shade for the neck. be noted that the brim isof increased width at the upper portion of the bonnet, in order to form an efficient shade for the eyes,`

while still allowing the crown of the device to be drawn down snugly on the head. rl'he bonnet structure as thus described, may be converted into a hat, as shown in Fig. 3. For this purpose the brim is turned back upon itself, the strings 7 are tucked inside of the crown of the device, and the tabs 6 are preferably turned up, and suitably produce an ornamental effect.

It will thus be seen that I have provided a readily convertible structure, adapted to be worn either as a bonnet or a hat, and so constructed that the fabric brim of the device will be of the required stiffness without the necessity of starching the same.

While l; have illustrated and described but one practical embodiment of the device, it will be apparent that various changes may be made in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

That is claimed is:

A head covering comprising a crown, a brim at the edge of said crown forming a closed annulus of a width adapting said brim to be turned back upon the crown to form a hat with said crown extending and appreciable distance above the edge of said brim and thereby providing a symmetrical design, or adapting said brim to be turned down so as to project forwardly from the crown and form a bonnet with the outer edge of the back of said brim at the base of the back of the head, and tabs secured to the junction of said crown and brim upon the outside of and at the It will 1 back of Said head covering, said tabs being of vsuch Width and' length that when said head Covering is Worn as a bonnet the tabs will extend downwardly an appreeiabie distance beyond cheI edge of the brim so as to cover a substantial Width and the entire length of the neck below the edge of the brim, and when said head covering is Worn as a hat the tabs will be turned upwardly and heid in position by seid brini 10 bewe'en the latter and said crown with the upper ends of said tabs extending above the edge of the brim and forming ornamental projections.
