BBASSIERE.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, SAMUEL T. METZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jamaica, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brassieres, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to brassieres and has for an object to provide a garment having the combined function of an elastic brassire and-a reducing band in which the reducing band is adjustable to. conform to various waist sizes of the wearer or to'obtain any desired reducing effect at the waist without varying the size of the bust section, and which is attractive, light, comfortable, and inexpensive. Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description and the novel features of my invention will be pointed out in claims.
In carrying out the invention I provide a brassiere of two sections, a waist section and a bust section, a portion of an edge ofthe waist section being secured to the lower edge of the bust section. The free ends of each section are provided with individual fastening means, and the means for securing the ends of the waist section is preferably adjustable so as to tighten or loosen this section as desired independently of the bust section. The sections are preferably constructed of elastic fabrics of different elasticity withthe waist section having the greater force of elasticity. The invention also comprises certain details and arrangements which will be more fully set forth in the following description of the preferred I embodiment of my invention.
In the m'awings: I
Fig. 1 is a view of the garment out in a flat condition, and
Fig. 2 is"a view of the same when the ends are connected together.
The illustrated brassiere comprises two principal sections, bands, or strips, the'section 1 encircling the body at the bust'and the section 2 enclrcling the waist, and a por tion of the upper edge of the waist section is connected to the lower edge of the bust encircling section with the remaining portion of the abutting edges separate. This providless in efiect agarmenthaving bifurcated en The bust section has its central portion when laid Application filed December 18, 1920. Serial No. 481,574.
constructed of an elastic fabric which mayconveniently comprise a crochet stitch that. is extensible in all directions with strands of rubber extending lengthwise throu h the fabric of the section, but any other suitable elastic fabric may be utilized if desired. The ends 3 of the bust section, when the garment is to fasten in the back, may be of any ordinary, and suitable fabric, and carry fastening means which co-operate to secure the ends together. This means may conveniently comprise books 4 upon one end, which engage with e es 5 upon the other end and opposite face 0 the section. i
The waist section is also partially or wholly elastic and may be formed of an extensible fabric with strands of rubber extending longitudinally through the same so as to be longitudinallyv extensible and elas-. tic and laterally non-extensible. The elastic portion of the waist section extends beyond the line of connection with the bust section so as to provide for a considerable extension or contraction of the waist section without materially extending or contracting the bust section. The free ends 6 of the waist section are provided with suitable adjustable fastening means which may conveniently comprise a row of hooks 7 upon one end and a plurality of rows of eyes 8 upon the other end and op osite face of the section, the row of hooks eing connectible to any row of eyes to tighten or. loosen the section.
The bust section is shaped to conform generally to the bust of thewearer and its upper edge is curved to clear the arms. Suitable shoulder straps 9 are connected between spaced points of the upper edge so asv to support the same from the shoulders where necessary or desirable.- The waist sec tion may be as .wide as desired and b its adjustable fastening means can be ma e to effect the necessary reducing pressure upon the waist portion of the wearer so as to tend to reduce the size of the same.
It will be seen that when a brassiere con-' to exert the necessary pressure without cutting into the bod of the wearer. The' garment can be so (1 according to the bust measurements and due to the adjustability of the waist section can be made to fit persons having waist measurements different from those of the average normal person of that bust measurement.
By reference to the end portions in the following claims, I mean the portions of the waist band which are not connected along the edges to the section encircling the body at the bust.
It will be understood that the garment herein described and illustrated is but one of the embodiments of my invention and that various changes in the details and arrangements may be made within the principle and scope of my invention.
I claim:
1. A brassiere comprising a band for encircling the body at the bust, and having means for connecting its ends together to close theband, a reducing band for encircling the body at the waist, and having means for connecting its ends to close the band, said bands being connected together along a portion of an edge and separate.
from one another elsewhere along the same edge, and the waist band having therein an each band having means to connect its ends elastic section.
2. A brassiere comprising a band for encircling the body at the bust, a reducing band for encircling the body at the waist,
together, said bands being connected together along a portion of an edge of each and separate from one another elsewhere,
the waist band having therein an elastic section in the portion unconnected from the other band.
3. A brassiere comprising a band for encircling the body at the bust, and having means for connecting its ends together to close the'band, a reducing band for encircling the body at the waist, and having means for connecting its ends to close the band and adjustable to tighten or loosen the band, said bands being connected to gether along a portion of an edge and separate from one another elsewhere along the same edge, and the waist band having therein an elastic section.
4. A brassiere comprising a section encircling the body at the bust and having an elastic portion therein, a waist section connected along a portion of one edge to the lower edge of the bust section and having at least one free portion, having therein an elastic portion and fastening means for coupling the corresponding ends of, said sections.
5. A brassiere comprising a-section ncircling the body at the bust and having an elastic portion therein, a waist section connected along a portion of one edge to the lower edge of the bust section and having free terminals at least one of which has an elastic portion therein, and fastening means between the corresponding ends of the bust and Waist sections, the fastening means for the waist section being adjustable to tighten or loosen this section at the desire of the wearer. v
In witness whereof I hereunto subscribe my signature.
