Description

M. MARTIN BRASSIERE Nov. 17, 1936.
Filed Dec. 16, 1955 ATTORNEY Patented Nov. l7, 1936 PATENT OFFICE BRASSIERE Marie" Martin, Riverside, Ill., assignor to The H. W. Gossard Company, Chicago, 111., a corporation of Delaware Application December 16, 1935, Serial No. 54,564
g 5 Claims. This invention relates to brassieres and has for its object to provide an improved uplift garment of this type which firmly supports and molds the bustline while leaving the back of the wearer exposed forformal or sports wear.
Another object of the invention is to provide a light backless brassiere having improved elastic tensioning means anchoring the garment securely to the front of the figure and insuring a smooth fit and a firm uplift effect wihout interfering with the freedom of movement of the wearer.
The various features and advantages of the invention will be described in connection with ,a preferred embodiment shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a front view of the brassiere as worn on the body;
Fig. 2 is a back view thereof; and
Fig. 3 is a plan view showing the garment as spread out when off the figure.
The brassiere shown in the drawing comprises a front portion constituting bust pockets l and 2, preferably of soft material such as double net. or elastic net cut and seamed to the desired shape, and narrow under-arm end sections 3 and 4 of similar material which extend only part way around the body and terminate adjacent the lines of the armpits so as to leave the back of the wearer substantially exposed. Shoulder straps 5 and 6, preferably elastic, are secured at one end to the apices of the respective bust pockets I and 2 and at the other end to the upper extremities of the respective end sections 3 and 4 as best shown in Fig. 3.
An elastic band 1, preferably comprising a single continuous tape, is stitched directly to the soft body of the lower' central front portion of the brassiere as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. This elastic band I extends downwardly beyond the front portion of the brassire and then upwardly to form loops la. and 1b which have their ends secured to the lower extremities of the respective end sections 3 and 4 as best shown in Figs. 2 and 3. One of these loops, for example loop Ia, carries a slidable clasp 8 having a slot which is adapted to engage a cooperating hook 9 slidablymounted on the loop lb. The clasp 8 preferably carries a depending hook Ill adapted to be fastened to a girdle, corset, garter belt, or similar garment, thereby exerting a downward tension on the elastic loops Ia and lb and increasing the uplift effect of the bust pockets while leaving the back of the wearer uncovered for formal or sports wear.
My improved combination of brassiere and tensioning meansinsures a smoother and neater fit than heretofore, and the direct connection of the elastic tensioning band 1 to the lower central front section of the brassiere anchors the garment securely to the figure at the front and makes it possible to maintain a very firm uplift 6 without danger of displacement. The elastic loops 1a and lb are slidable in the slots of fastener members 8 and 9 and are thus automatically adjustable with movements of the body.
It will be evident that various changes may be 10 made in the foregoing construction without departing from the scope and spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
The invention claimed is:
l. A brassire comprising a front portion con- 15 stituting bust pockets and end sections extending only part way around the body so as to leave the back of the wearer substantially exposed, a continuous elastic band secured across the lower central portion and having its ends attachedtothe 20 respective end sections of said brassire to form loops, and means between the ends and central portion of said elastic band for fastening said elastic loops at the back of the body.
2. A brassiere comprising a front portion con- 26 stituting bust pockets and end sections extending only part way around the body so as to leave the back of the wearer substantially exposed, shoulder straps secured to said bust pockets and to said end sections, a continuous elastic band 30 secured across the lower central portion and having its ends secured to the respective end sections of said brassiere to form loops and means between the ends and central portion of said" elastic band for connecting said elastic loops to-.
gether at the back of the body.
3. A brassiere comprising a front portion constituting bust pockets and end sections extending only part way around the body so as to leave the back of the wearer substantially exposed, shoulder straps secured to said bust pockets and to said end sections, a continuous elastic band secured across the lower central front portion and having its ends attached to the respective end sections of saidbrassiere to form loops, and 4 means for securing said elastic loops to a girdle or the like to exert a downward tension on said loops and an uplift on said bust pockets.
4. A brassiere comprising a front portion constituting bust pockets and end sections extending only part way around the body so as to leave the back of the wearer substantially exposed, elastic shoulder straps secured to said bust pockets and to said end sections, a continuous elastic band secured to the lower central front portion of said brassiere and having its ends extending beyond said front portion and connected to the respective end sections of the brasslere to form elastic loops adapted to meet at the back of the body, means for connecting said elastic loops together at the back 01 the body, and means "for securing said elastic loops to a girdle or the like to exert a downward tension on said loops and an uplift on said bust pockets.
5. A brassiere comprising a front portion constituting bust pockets and end sections extending only part way around the body so as to leave the back 01' the wearer substantially exposed, elastic on said loops, and means cooperating with said Iastener members for connecting same to a girdle or the like to exert a downward tension on said loops and an uplift on said bust pockets.
