Application fil ed Novemher 18, 1321. Serial No."516,102;
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAMH. a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York city, New York County, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Childrens aists, of which the following is a specification. This invention relates to a childs waist of the type known as slip on waist which does not open back, front or anywhere longitudinally, but is merely slipped onv over the Somme,
childs body and thus is composedof con-.
tinuous material. circumferentially. The present invention is designed to produce such a waist embodying adjustingmeans-by which the effective size of the waist may be changed and thus it may be enlarged as the child grows so as to properly fit'and he may wear it longer than he otherwise could. It furthermore has another advantage from the commercial standpoint since it enables dealers to fit customers more easily and avoids the necessity for carrying so many sizes in stock. The adjusting means is placed at the lower po-rtionof the back of the waist. The slip on feature also has the advantage of reducing the number of buttons necessary, makes it easier to put on, and makes the adjustment more satisfactory. The novel fea tures will be fully understood from the following description and claims taken with the drawings. In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a rear View of a waist embodying the invention with the parts adjusted to the smaller size; and y F ig. 2 is a similar View showing the ad just ng strap loose and drawn back to more clearly illustrate the structure beneath.
As shown inthe drawings the body portion 10 of the waist is formed of any suitable fabric which is continuous around the body portion with no dividing line with edges to be connected by buttons. It has shoulder straps 11 leaving a neck opening 12 between them and arm holes 13. It may be provided with strengthening strips 14 sewed to its outer surface extending up over the shoulder straps and with parallel strengthening strips 15 and 16 around it near the lower end. A portion of the material at the central part of the lower ed e in the back is removed, as shown at 1 up to and through strengthening strip 15. A flap or tab 18 preferably integral with the material of the body connects at one end with'the body at one side edge of the openingformed where the material is removed at 17 and in *igure 2 is shown folded back exposing the opening... It is wide enough to cover the opening and has in it two pairs of button holes 19 andQO the pairs being spaced longitudinally and those of a pair being in vertical alignment. Between the strip15 and the lower edge on the opposite side of the opening 17 two. pairs of buttons 21 and 22 are secured. The length of strap 18 and the relative positions of the button holes in it and the buttons on the other side are such that whenthe flap is folded to. the position shown in F'igurell the buttons 22 may enter button holes 20 and buttons 21 enter button holes 19. When thus connected theend of tab 18 where it connects with the bodyportion at the side of opening 17 is in approximately the same vertical line as the edge of the body fabric on the opposite side of opening 17 and the fabric of the body immediately above opening 17 is folded to a certain extent. This is the contracted condition of the garment and is the proper condition for sale and for purchase for a growing child. The waist may then be enlarged by unbuttoningthe flap 18, moving it outwardly and causing buttons 21 only to enter and engage button holes 20. The amount of the enlargement will correspond to the distance between the pairs of button holes 19 and 20. Vertical strengthening strips 23 may be used adjacent and between the pairs of buttons 21 and 22 and similar strips 24 may be used between and adjacent to button holes 19 and20 in flap 18.
Although one specific embodiment of the invention is shown for purposes of illustration, the invention is not limited to that particular form beyond what is indicated in the claims.
tion only for adjusting its size including two pairs of laterally spaced vertically aligned buttons and'a flap connected to the body portion at one end and having two pairs of vertically alignedv longitudinally spaced button holes corresponding in spacing and position with sald buttons and adapted to be entered and engaged by said buttons.
2. A slip-on childs waist composed of fabric permanently continuous around the body portion 7 bottom edge upwardly for a short distance forming a notch or opening, two pairs of vertically aligned laterally spaced buttons on one side ofsaid opening ;and;a :fiapco-nnected at one end to the body on the opposite side of said opening and provided with two pairs of a vertically aligned longitudinally spaced button holes corresponding in spacing-and relation to said buttons whereby the end pair of button holes maybe entered and engaged by either pair of buttons thus effecting an adjustment of the size of the waist.
3. A slip-on child s waist-composedof fab ric permanently continuousnround the: body portion and means at the lower central portion only ofits back for adjusting-its size including two;- pai-rsof laterally spaced Vertically alignedbuttonston one side ofathe center line near: :the.;bottom. ati thecbaek and having a portion removed from the a flap connected to thebod-y portion atone end and having two pairs of vertically aligned longitudinally spaced button holes corresponding inspacing and position with said buttons and adapted to be entered and engaged by said buttons.
opening, two pairs of vertically aligned laterally spaced buttons on one side of said opening and a fiap connected at one end to thebody on the "opposite side of said opening and'provided with two pairs of vertically aligned longitudinally spaced button holes correspondin-gin spacing and relations to'said buttons whereby the end pair of button holes may bexentered and engagedby either pair of buttons-nthus effecting an adjustment of the size oi'z th'etwaist.
In testimony whereof I hereunto signature.
