To all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known thatl, WALTER TABERT, a Lcitizen of the United States, residing at East Grand Forks, in the County of Polk and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wrenches of the sliding jaw type, and has for its object to provide a wrench of such class, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, with means to permit of the convenient adjustment of the sliding jaw with respect to the work, as well as further including means for clamping the sliding jaw to the work when the wrench is manipulated for the purpose of removing or securing the work from or in position.
A further object of the invention is to provide a wrench of such class, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, including means for adjusting the sliding jaw with respect to the work, as well as locking the jaw in its adjusted position, and further with means, if any looseness is present between the jaws of the wrench and the work, whereby the sliding jaws and its locking means will be bodily shifted to securely clamp the work when the wrench is manipulated to remove the work from or secure it in position.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a wrench of the adjustable sliding jaw type, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, and which is simple in its construcltion and arrangement, strong, compact, thoroughlyl efficient in its use, including means to provide for the convenient adjusting of the sliding jaw as well as means for conveniently clamping thev sliding jaw against the work, and inexpensive to manufacture.
Vith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel con-v struction,combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanyingv drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to .be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope'of the claims hereunto appended.

Referring to the drawings in detail, a
wrench in accordance with ythis invention consists of a body portion l` having a bifurcated inner portion 2 and a stationary jaw 3 formed integral with the outer end thereof. The body portion l vis formed with a lengthwise extending chamber 5, having the rear wall 6 thereof clos-ed and the front wall 7 provided with a Vlengthwise slot 8 which is of materially less width than the width of the rear wall 6 and is disposed centrally with respect thereto. The sett-ing` up of the front wall 7 with the slot 8 provides pair of oppositely extending shoulders 9. The slot 8 extends from the jaw 3 to the bifurcated inner end of the body portion l. The shoulders 9 constitute what may be termed combined seats and guides for the carrier, to be presently referred to, of the: slidable jaw.
The outer end wall of the chamber is provided by the inner face of the stationary jaw 3 and said outer vend wall'is formed with a pocket- 10 and a socket ll. Arranged in the socket ll, as well as projecting therefrom, is a coiled spring 12, having its rear end connected to a toothed stopy bara 13 which slides against the inner face :of the wall 6. The teeth of the *bar 13 are indicated at la and are of rthe ratchet type, The rear end of the barl is formed integral with a plate l5 whichfrides against the walls 6 and 7 and extends intothe bifurcatcd inner portion of the body portion l, and has the rear end thereof bevelled, as at 16. The plate l5 also rides against the side walls l? and 18 of the chamber 5 and extends across the inner end of the slot 8.
Arranged within the chamber 5, is a carrier 19 provided at one end with an extension 20 adapted to engage in the pocket l0 when the carrier is shifted towards the jaw 3, and
