EMPROVEMENT IN CARRIAGE-CLIPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 150,897, dated May l2, 1874; application filed December 2, 1873.
-To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MOSES SEWARD, ot' New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Carriage-Clips; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in
Figure 1, a side view of the clip before bending; Fig. 2, a side view, bent; and in Fig. 3, a perspective View of the die.
This invention relates to an improvement in that class of carriage-clips which are adapted to Gothic-shaped bars, and particularly to an improvement in the clip for which Letters Patent were granted to me March 14, 1871. In that patent, in order to form the sharp point of the arch, the clip, before bending', was struck up at the centerthat is to say, a transverse sharp rib raised upon the outside by making a corresponding depression upon the under side, the, sharp edge forming the point of the arch. This sometimes weakens the clip at that pointa difficulty which this invention is designed to overcome.
This invention consists in forming a rib upon the outside in addition to the thickness of the plate of the clip, so that at the point of the arch the clip is thicker than at either side.
A is the clip, provided With bolt ends B, in the usual manner 5 but, instead of making the clip straight or perfectly flat upon its upper surface, I form a sharp rib, a, at the center, transversely across the clip upon the upper or outside. This is best done by means of a die, substantially as seen in Fig. 3. Transversely across the center a depression, d, is made, corresponding to the rib a to be formed. The reverse side of the clip is made flat, thus making the clip considerably thicker at the center or point 0f bending, and this addition forms the center or point of the arch when bent into form to fit the bar, as seen in Fig. 2, andthe straining or distress of the metal, and consequent liability to break at the center, is avoided.
I do not wish to be understood as broadl)T claiming a clip of Gothic-arch form, as such, I am aware, is old.
I claim as my invention- As an article of manufacture, the clip having a rib, a, transversely across its upper surface at the point otl bending, and at upon the reverse side, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
MOSES SEWARI).
